Tapeworms are flat intestinal worms that are made up of many small segments, each about ¼ - ½" (3-5 mm) long. Depending on the type of product you use and the presence of other pets in your home, your veterinarian will help you decide whether you also need to treat your house and yard for fleas. The risk for human infection with Dipylidium caninum is quite small but does exist. These tapeworms cause serious, potentially fatal, disease when humans become infected. Dogs and cats may also become infected if they eat rodents carrying the parasite.

When eggs of Echinococcus are passed in the feces of the dog and cat, humans are at risk for infection. As with the more common tapeworm, infection with Echinococcus is infrequent yet possible. However, contrary to popular belief, pinworms do not infect cats or dogs. Children who get pinworms do not get them from cats or dogs. As my colleague Tanvi Misra explained last week, Ebola isn't all that contagious ; given the advanced state of American public health, it's even less so here. Get your dog vaccinated!

If your dog is infested with fleas and bites at the itching fur, he can very easily eat a few fleas that may carry tapeworm eggs. Once the flea is digested, the tapeworm eggs then hatch in the intestines and latch on to start feeding and reproducing. Fortunately, tapeworms in dogs are very easy to treat and do not usually cause serious illness. This is because the tapeworm is sucking out all the beneficial nutrients in your dog.

The head has suckers or grooves which allow the tapeworm to attach itself to the intestine of their host.Tapeworms have no digestive system; instead they feed by absorbing nutrients through their outer skin. On occasion, a dog will ingest an infected flea.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKbA-HzX-Lw
