We came this far in the fight against breast cancer. Afterward I also understand some who were so unlucky. Maybe you think they're selfish and reckless, to say the least. I felt like I Had been beat up by a bunch of Cylons.
A few months ago, Lily Winters Ashby, a fictional character on The Young and The Restless, portrayed by Christel Khalil, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Three operations and too many frakkin cancer treatments later, I have emerged a Cancer Story and a woman acutely aware of how little time God gives us. The oncologist shook my hand a couple weeks ago, bid me good luck and told me to make an appointment for 30 days out, three months out and so forth. She handed me a prescription for hormonal therapy pills, a number to call if I got upset and a business card if I had any questions. I was burned, in pain, peeling, wearing a wig, and recovering. Life was supposed to continue on as usual, right? I felt like I'd been beat up by a bunch of Cylons. I wasn't the same person who went to the doctor in October, so that was impossible? I think this is the same with anybody who's survived a life-threatening illness.
They were sitting in the doctor's office waiting to be called back, Sydney was visibly nervous and Jason just sat there holding her hand. They were finally called back and after the doctor examined her, he explained that he would have his nurse call and set up a mammogram. He came back in a few minutes later saying that her mammogram was scheduled for Friday that was only three day away. The doctor explained to both of them that depending on the finding of the mammogram that they may want to do an ultrasound. Depending on what they saw on the ultrasound they might schedule a needle core biopsy. Her doctor tried to be reassuring, but they were both nervous, the waiting, and the not knowing was difficult. They thanked the doctor as they left his office.
A lump in your breast or underarm, or a thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue. Breast lumps are usually painless, although some patients report a "prickly" sensation. The lump can be as small as a pea and still be a symptom of cancer. Swelling in your underarm can also be a sign of breast cancer. If you have swollen lymph glands in your underarms, call your doctor sooner rather than later. Swollen lymph glands indicate a change in your lymphatic system, which can be a warning sign of many types of cancer.
My first reaction was a very predictable old-fashioned women's cry for 5 minutes. But later I was smiling with great joy!!! Yeah, it sounds crazy, but I felt very optimistic about this experience. Of course, I didn't want to get sick, but I was sure that the outcome would be a good one. My boyfriend was so supportive and immediately took the situation under control. He knew that there were two cancer treatment hospitals that were the top in the country. Within the week I had an appointment at Sloan Kettering, and I was well taken care of.

They say that there are many people that survive cancer because they focus on the positive things while going through treatment. In Mr. D's case, they were planning to get married and go on a cruise within a year or so. So, Mr. D has something to look forward to after treatment. The cruise tickets were purchase so it was on him to get better in time. He knew he would get through it and had a support system to help him get stronger and survive. It has been about 6 years since his treatment and he is still loving life and living the cancer free dream. They are happily married to this day and he had a wonderful time on the cruise.
