Unsure Why You Were Shut Out of the Hiring Process
One of the most frustrating aspects of the job hiring process is applying for jobs that you are not qualified for on paper but have done for your previous employer. In many cases a restaurant manager jobs may have held this job position successfully for many years. However, they lack the understanding of the reports, software, and management tools. They may not know the right terms to use when conveying their skills to the hiring manager.
This article is for restaurant managers are trying to move up the career ladder without understanding why all the doors are shut. Why they never hear back?
As a Career and Performance coach I have talked to many professionals. The same problems always come up.
On The Job Experience
You create your own ceiling in the hospitality world. You will either learn to become ‘all you need to be’ to manage a restaurant, or you will stick with what you did in the last job, or what you think is right, and limit your future success.

Many restaurant management candidates who are trained on the job, set the bar fairly low. They develop a mindset that make it impossible for their career to advance. Look at the following questions and see whether they apply to your job hunting experience.
1. No time to network. I feel that networking is a waste of time. It is all political and only for the ‘boys club.’
Professionals associate with professionals. Successful people are most comfortable around other successful people. This is why the person who uses a recruitment service like geckohospitality.com will land a job quicker than someone who uses a public website job board. The professionals and larger chains go where they expect to find their best Candidates.
2. I have no time for Education or upgrading. I didn’t like reading the books my boss reads.
Education gives you the tools needed to improve your performance. The moment a recruiter sees a resume with no upgrading or education they see red flags.
3. Poor Communication Skills
There is no excuse for poor communication skills in today’s computer world. You can improve your skills easily, free, and online.
It is very difficult to manage a team effectively without being able to communicate. Inability to communicate damage a manager’s performance at every level. At the floor, there is increased turnover due to team frustration, and wasted time and energy. At the executive levels it is important to be able to succinctly highlight the improvements and increases in revenue, or decreases in expenses in a manner that general managers and investors will understand.

Degrees and BS but Cannot Help a Manager Past Entry Level Jobs
This professional knows ‘what’ to do. However, they have not learned ‘how’ to do the job. They are full of information but lack the practical skills needed to turn theory into real-world solutions.
1. Hiring managers fear hiring a manager because they do not understand the difference between book theory and practical application.
2. Students have spent 3 or 4 years sitting at a desk reading and typing. The hospitality jobs is a high stress job that requires physical endurance and a lot of patience. Working at a summer job may not prepare you for a position as a restaurant manager.
These are a couple common reasons why Restaurant Management Candidates may hit the ceiling. Take a good look at your interview routine, and your resume. Look for anything in it that might limit your career.
