How To Train Your Newly Adoped Dog
Dog ownership is a tradition stretching back hundreds of generations. That very history shows that man and dog have been partners for so long for a very good reason. However, since you're the human, you're going to have to be sure that you're caring for the dog properly. These tips will show you how to raise a happy and healthy dog.

Just like humans benefit from an annual physical, your dog should see the vet at least once a year. Since your dog cannot talk to you, it may be hard to determine when arthritis is setting in or a tooth begins hurting. Getting your dog checked up on annually will allow you to know if there are any problems.

Store your prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines in a safe place where your dog cannot get them. Your dog could have a heart attack or a seizure if it swallows some pills. If your dog does ingest some of your medication, get in touch with your veterinarian immediately.

Use flea treatments with caution. Quite a few of them use ingredients that are very unsafe for kids, including an ingredient that has been linked to cancer. Discuss any concerns with your veterinarian, and see if he has more holistic treatment options that might help to keep your pet free from fleas and your family safe.

Clip your dog's nails. It can be quite painful for your dog if his nails start curling under. You can use store bought clippers to trim them yourself. If this idea makes you uneasy, a groomer can easily attend to them for you.

Do not buy cheap food items for your dog in an effort to save money. Your dog will benefit from eating healthy, quality food. Sure, it's more expensive. But, isn't your pet worth it?

Train your dog how to properly walk when on a leash. He should know the "heel" command, stay close to you and not veer far ahead or drag behind. That way, your dog is safe and the walks are better for you as well. Even if your dog is sometimes walked on a loose leash, it should still know the command anyway.

When making a dog food selection, the cheap stuff is rarely the best choice. Later on, it will help that you've fed your dog quality and nutritious food. Though better brands cost more, it is worth it to know your dog is receiving the nutrients it needs.

Your dog's nails need to be trimmed regularly. The nails can cause the dog discomfort if they start to curl under. Purchasing some nail clippers at your local pet store is a good idea. If you aren't comfortable with this, invest a little money and take your dog to the groomers.

health Prevent matting on your dogs paws by keeping the area well trimmed. Clean and comb the hair before you trim it. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, take your dog to a groomer.

Given the close ties between humans and dogs, it is not surprising that many people seem to have the ability to read dogs' facial expressions accurately. However, now that you've read this, you can understand that dogs are deeper than just body language. Your dog will be happier now that you've learned so much!
