Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04
The fish of these shoreline grounds, due possibly to the greater plethora of food in this article, are thought to be distinctly superior in quality to those of the same varieties taken on the overseas banks. The cod and the haddock, especially, of the Gulf of Maine are specifically well conditioned seafood and are noted for their excellence.

The figures presented in Table 2 show only a fraction of the capture from the Inner Reasons, since they deal completely with the fares of minn kota endura vessels of 5 net plenty and over. There are thousands of the so-called "registered" or "under-tonned" boats, mainly gill-netters, that take numerous pounds from these seas annually, principally cod and haddock.

In the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are more than 300 weirs which furnished to American smokers and canners during the year 1923 (whose figures happen to be chosen as symbolizing an average season) 77,000,000 kilos of herring. In the coast of Massachusetts there are 50 or more weirs and species of fish traps, and in the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Part of Maine there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore islands, or perhaps in the open seas, and all these have a rich harvest from the waters. , there is the lobster fishery, more important in the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in the states. Then and way too

Of these various branches of the fisheries industries number of statistics are available, but we may say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" vessels mentioned landed 5,324,426 pounds of fish in the port of Boston, mostly of haddock and cod, and that the same type of craft in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, principally of ground species of fish. We also know that each and every village, town, hamlet and island and city together this nearly 4,000 'miles of coast line takes its toll through the sea.

Lukes Rock and roll. This rock is S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, spherical in shape, and about 1 mile in diameter. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isstones and gravel, and mud. This is primarily a small-vessel minn kota endura ground, but there is however some vessel fishing. Hake are undertaken here from June to September, comprehensive; cod are present regarding the rocks the year close to. Pollock are in spring and fall, and haddock from December to Feb, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura is simply by trawl and hand line.

Newfound Terrain. A small rocky area about 1/4 mile throughout with an automatic buoy in the center for guidance into the Bay of Fundy. This can be a small-motorboat ground having depths averaging 18 fathoms. It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. months and Species are as on Lukes Rock. Fishing is as simple as trawl and fingers line.

Henrys Rock. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 mile in diameter, and 30 fathoms spanning a level bottom. Sport fishing is done by hand trawl and line. Cod are present the year all around, a few haddock inside the fall, hake in the summer but not in the slip, and pollock in fall and spring.

Handspike Ground. 8 miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly spherical in form, and ? mile across. It has a bottom of rocks and depths of from 35 to 40 fathoms. Kinds and seasons are similar as on Lukes Rock, but mostly cod and pollock are taken here by hand and trawl line.

American Egg Rock. This is certainly SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 miles distant, lying in a NE. and SW. direction, 3 a long way long by 1 mile wide. The base isirregular and sharp, and difficult and has 25 to 30 fathoms. Fishing here is mostly yourself line, the ground becoming said to be too tough for trawling. This really is a small-vessel ground, and minn kota endura is done mainly during the summer season. Cod and pollock are consumed thespring and summer, and fall; haddock are present in fall and spring; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in spring and slip. This is not a hake ground.

Old Egg Rock. This rock is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a NE. and SW. path. It is 3 mls long by 1 mile wide; carries a rocky depths and bottom http://www.fishing.net/ of 25 to 30 fathoms. This is also a small-boat ground, exactly where minn kota endura is done mainly by hand lines, but trawls also are used. This ground is fished by the bigger vessels in the slip months when the weather is too rough for minn kota endura on the outside reasons. , and a few pollock are taken in fall and spring; hake in fair number inside the fall months.haddock and Cod

Center Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It is in a NE. and SW. direction and it is about 1 mile long by ? mile wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and the bottom is tough and rocky. It is a small-motorboat ground mostly and of little importance as being a minn kota endura ground. Cod are present the year about haddock in late summer and spring with a smaller variety in the fall. Cusk are here the year around. A few pollock are here in the spring and slip.

Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 miles, whence the ground stretches WSW to inside of 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock and roll with an average thickness of 1 distance. The depths work from 15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are razor-sharp and rocky; the deeps, clay and gravel. There are places ? mile long and others 3 miles long getting depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these areas have special brands: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds talked about here and those mentioned before are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these seem to be angling spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. Around the Broken Ground the minn kota endura season is from June 1 by way of September. Herring usually are abundant in this article from May to September. Cod are taken outside of the reasons in spring and fall. Pollock and small cod are taken on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud underside in summer and fall and hake on the mud bottom part in fall and summer.

Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies eastern side from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island over Eco-friendly Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Tropical island. This ledge consists of two rocky shoals with depths of 3 to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in magnitude and 1/4 mile aside lying NW and SE from one another. To the westward of those is broken soil nearly to Petit Manan. These are beloved small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge drops instantly into the mud. In May large cod are caught across the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30 fathoms. Hake and haddock are taken in late spring season (May) and slip. Fishing is by palm trawl and collection.

Ben's Ground. Is situated ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 mls. The marks are Petit Manan Light-weight to northward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain on the west side of Trafton's Island or Pond Island Light-weight to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The earth is circular fit and healthy, about 3/4 mile all over, having 14 to 30 fathoms of water. The bottom is of mud and rocks. This ground is of little importance except as a tiny-boat soil in summer for haddock and cod. Hake are adopted the muddy underside near it, This is a winter haddock floor in calm weather conditions, these fish leaving it in the storms, the water being relatively too shallow for them to "ride out a blow" in comfort, These kinds of at least is the cause the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of their taking on shoal grounds after a period of heavy weather.

Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest spot, SSE from Petit 4 and Manan? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles over an irregular bottom part, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps are haddock, muddy and Cod are considered here in June and could, hake from July to September, It really is a good lobster soil, also, Fishing here is by handline and trawl operated from vessels and small boats from close to-by Maine ports.

Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This is placed SSE from Petit Manan 7 a long way to the center. It really is 2 miles very long SW and NE and one mile large and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the bottom of mud and rocks is extremely uneven, The shoalest portion is nearby the center. Some vessel minn kota endura is carried on here early in the year, though it is said to become good cod and haddock ground, and is also mainly a small vessel ground.

Black Ledges Ground. This floor lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges. Alternatively, Black Ledges. It is a excellent haddock ground to get a brief season early in the year and early summer season when the fish are following the herring educational institutions. In general it is a little-boat floor on which chiefly palm lines and trawls are operated, A couple of cod and cusk are taken within the fall, which is a good lobster soil.

Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern part bears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 mile distant The ridge is much broken, its average width becoming ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. In 30 to 35 fathoms, on a muddy bottom, hake are abundant from July to October, inclusive, although it is really not much fished in the shoaler spots. Cod and cusk are located here in the springtime and fall; haddock from October to January, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura here is done by tiny boats and tiny vessels mainly from Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor by trawl and hand line. It is a very good lobster ground.

Martins Ground; Hillards Reef. The center bears WSW. from Schoodic Point, distant 3 miles. It is a rocky patch of four to five acres and has depths of from 15 to 25 fathoms. It is not important aside from its hand-lining for haddock and cod in the fall and spring months and for hake in the fall. This is a good lobster floor.

Egg Rock Damaged Ground. This is a rocky ridge making out S. by W. from Egg Rock Ledges and is about 2 miles long by 14 miles wide. It has an unusual bottom, with depths from 9 to 15 fathoms. This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Reasons, divides the american or Bakers Tropical isle mud channel from Schoodic mud channel. Both these were formerly considered very good hake grounds but, while still good, are certainly not as profitable for hake minn kota endura like in past years. Haddock are taken on the ridge in the spring as well as inOctober and December, and December. Several cod are consumed the spring and fall. Minn Kota Endura is simply by trawl and fingers line. It is a great lobster ground.

Inside Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles. This floor is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in diameter, and has depths running from 18 to 60 fathoms. The base is ofpea gravel and rocks, and mud; the shoaler portions are distinct and rocky. Vessels from Maine ports use this ground, sportfishing by hand line and trawl. haddock and Cod are ample here in spring and fall, and hake fishing is good from the summer. It is a great lobster ground.

It lies 7 miles outside the house Inner Schoodic, has been considered one of the best shoreline fishing grounds in the Maine coast, and yet seems to deserve the reputation. The ridge is about 8 mls long in a NE. and SW. course, lying nearly parallel with the adjacent coast. Its greatest breadth is 6 a long way. The bottom is shattered and irregular and possesses depths from 22 to 80 fathoms over rocks and gravel on the shoaler parts and dirt on the deeps. Principally Maine vessels seafood this ground, making use of hand line and trawl. cusk, haddock, pollock and Cod and hake are present here from June to December, and a few large halibut, up to 300 pounds in weight, are taken here in July and June.

Mount Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge is situated SE. by E. from the Big Slope of Mount Wasteland Island. From Schoodic Island to the centre of this ground is all about 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and W. by S, is 2 miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. On the sides sand and clay predominate, though depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are difficult. This is a comparatively little ground, but it furnishes good cod angling in the spring (April to July) and tumble. Cusk are taken in the spring and fall. Virtually no haddock are taken in this article. Hake are located in the deep water about the W. and SW. insummer season and spring, and fall; trawl lines principally are used on this page. It is a good lobster ground but is too distant for present fishing methods.

Level Ground. This terrain lies between Attach Desert and Swan Island, SW. from Long Island. In 50 fathoms, with a hard mud bottom part, there is good sportfishing for hake in the summertime. Minn Kota Endura is by hand trawl and range.

Hake usually are abundant just off the southeast edge in summer season. This bank is mostly fished by craft from ports of eastern Maine--small boats as a rule--and the principal method is by trawling, while there is considerable hand-lining for cod in 25 fathoms in June and July.
