Everyone was gathered in the stadium and a group of people stood in the center of it with a microphone that was turned off at the time. It was easy to see that no one wanted to be there, but what could they do? It wasn’t like anyone asked for this and with war on everyone’s minds, it seemed like hope was the last thing to think about. It was, without thought to the younger generation, time to decide who would lead the army of such a small town to go to the higher ups and hatch a plan. The rules were that certain people could prove how they would beat the enemy, and right now everyone seemed to suck at doing it. If there was any hope in the future, Elly thought, it should be to the young people to help out. “Is there anyone else who would like to prove what they could do? We’ll open it up to the younger age group, though we won’t go easy on you” the guy in the center had warned, almost as though he knew that no one would want to volunteer. “Hey, why don’t you go down there? I bet you’d be good at it,” Alex suggested, sucker punching Elly’s arm and smiling a bit, the notion of the threat not dampening his spirits. If it weren’t for Alex’s optimism, things wouldn’t have ended up the way they did. Thinking about it and hearing the guy out front say that it was the last time he would ask, Elly got out of her seat, her parents and people around them watching intently. Before they could do or say anything, Elly coughed and tried to clear her throat, acting like she needed a drink, which was provided at the fountain. No one paid any mind to this notion so they let her go, which was for the best since someone would stop her in the family, but they just didn’t understand. No, it wasn’t that they didn’t understand, but that they couldn’t. It wasn’t like she told people she had this power, it would cause problems and no one would believe her. Plus, Elly was afraid of hospitals and tests were the last things on her wish list. Making her way to the back and down the side, she stepped onto the lawn and the guy with the microphone turned towards her. Naturally, everyone else who could see the field turned too and no one was able to not notice. Embarrassment creeping up her face and changing the color of it, Elly smiled and tried to walk staright, which was failing miserably. Finally she reached the others, two boys who seemed buff plus Elly who was not buff at all and looked like she didn’t belong there. “Alright looks like we have some youngling’s! State your reasons and what you could do to help us out” the announcer said with enthusiasm, as though this was one big game for him. The first boy went first, trying not to stutter and voicing his opinion. From what Elly could tell was that he must have been the valedictorian at one point and his way of speaking was glorious. If Elly wasn’t picked, she would definitely pick him instead.
