Tohono O'odham Creation Story...
In the beginning there was darkness in which earthmaker and buzzard drifted. Earthmaker rubbed dirt from his skin and held it in his hands; out of it grew a greasewood bush. From a ball of gum taken from the bush, earthmaker than created the world. As the earth was being joined to the sky, I'itoi, another supernatural, came into being. Coyote, who served as a messenger for the deities also appeared about the same time. The newly formed universe was a wobbley affair until the spider people sewed the earth and sky together. Buzzard formed mountains and water courses with his wings and earthmaker created the stars, sun and moon.

The first attempt to create life resulted in imperfect human beings so the supernaturals brought a flood to destroy them. Before the flood earthmaker, I'itoi, and coyete agreed that the first to appear afterwards would be known as Elder Brother. I'ioti emerged first and assumed the title. Elder Brother than formed new human beings from clay but this lead to a conflict with earthmaker, in anger, disappered underground.

I'toi dwelt with his creations(Identifiied as the Hohokam) and taught them how to live in the desert and gave them ceremonies necessary to bring rain. Hostility between I'itoi and the people broke out and they decieded to kill him. In four years I'itoi revived with the help of the winds and went underground to secure aid from the people there. These were the O'odham and pima and they agreed to help I'itoi. Gropher burrowed through the ground to lead the people out of the four underworlds. With I'itoi's assistance they drove out the Hohokam. I'itoi then helped out the O'odham and pima to establish themselves in the desert. The bountaries for each group were marked by corn kernels carried by the winds. I'itoi then left and returned to live underground in the vicinity of Baboquivari peak.
