I have footage of this convention on my alternate youtube for those who care to know how this con was and such.
LouisiANIME
Date: April 22-24, 2011 Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana Hotel: Crowne Plaza
To start everything off, I was recruited as a volunteer for the con before it started which got me there for free but also got me some security-like responsibilities. Granted, this didn't last long as I eventually ended up filling in for the Pre-registration guys and got a shift switch from Security to Pre-reg which resulted in me pretty much doing some simple desk job (something I'd never see myself doing).
Either way, my con experience was cut a little short due to the volunteering but it didn't stop me from having a good time.
First off, I was just happy to have seen a lot of my friends at the con (I rarely have time to visit and or interact with people in the real world what with the school/work stuff goin' on) so that was great to have done. I had a great time interacting with the Guests (even though I chiefly hung out with the voice actors..apparently, the musicians didn't make it and Volpin had to cancel but at least Airship Isabella were nice enough to be in the main hall).
The one thing that really downed me was getting punched in the stomach by a little girl...it didn't really hurt or anything like that but it just surprised me that it happened and she seemed like she was hopin' to have to do it again just to beat me up (I don't hit women no matter how much I hate them), she seemed pretty legit and that depressed me for a few minutes.
I got over it.
I had a great time at the con rave, though, despite realizing that there wasn't a lot of things I could do anymore (like flip off people's hands and such), I felt old and out of shape but I managed to hang out with a lot of people, dance my a** off to some good music and make new friends in the process.
I didn't really have too many qualms about the con's performance although they should have prepared a little bit better rather than put everything together at the last minute. That really disappointed (pissed off -koffkoff-) a lot of people at the con because some of them would wait for a long time for a panel that either already happened or isn't happening at all...which would result in some generic hate mail. There was a HUGE lack of schedules because everyone needed one (this con had like...a lot of people in it, so imagine like a good 80% of them coming to the registration room [my workplace] asking for a schedule like...four or five times), a lot of people found themselves looking and hoping that they were in the rooms at the right time, I found it pretty frustrating myself but that's one of the few logical things that I witnessed a lot of people blam the con for.
There was another complaint throughout the LouisiANIME forum that there was a lack of things like security and such. My take on that is simply, it's up to the congoers if they want to be security and such, I know that while I was volunteering, there was at least like 4 or 5 security personell and I think 2 of them were actual officials so...I'm assuming they're taking that whole "staff uniform" suggestion into effect.
I'm sure there were more things going on, but for me, if there's things that I could suggest that'd make it a better con is simply plan better and adhere to the suggestions of the con-goers.
To be quite honest though, I'm very appreciative of LouisiANIME simply because three years ago, I didn't know that there was such thing as anime conventions in Louisiana, narytheless within city limits. My first anime convention I went to was a long time ago with some people who I used to consider friends (I hate this one guy now) and it was in New Orleans (I think) and I had a great time despite it being my first time and then I learned that they weren't doing that one con anymore and I kinda felt empty inside...for a few years, I felt kinda unaccomplished and didn't do much (until wrestling came along and changed everything for me), then I found myself looking for anime conventions in Louisiana (I was well aware of conventions out of state, but I had to throw my match in the dark) only to learn that not only are there cons in Louisiana, but there was one not too far from where I'd be working at later on in life and I just HAD to go there.
I mean, there's a lot of things that are wrong with a lot of cons, but at least I don't have to drive for hours and miles to one that's not too far from where I live. I'm even more happy for CyPhaCon, BabelCon and MechaCon simply because you get a chance to network locally with people that share similar interests as you do over most things, but what's better i that you network with exceptionally talented people that branch into the creativity field and make something badass and if nice enough, they may jut put you in their projects,
Wow, this is a long entry.
Long Story Short, I had a great time at the con, it could always do better though and I hope that I can attend the one for next year. Hopefully by that time, I'll have a better computer so I can actually make a decent review.
Overall Rating: 7/10...
Planning...is...Everything.
