Within the past year there have been some big events that have really changed my life and my out look on things. On Dec 6, 2009 my volunteer fire dept was dispatched out to a 6 year old girl who was struck by a car. Im not an emt yet, nor did i have all the training that i do now, but we arrived on scene. The EMTs had me do chest compressions while they continiued with their assessment. Because they were higher ranking, i didnt go through all the CPR steps. Well, I started doing chest compressions, and with every push, the girls chest and stomach was getting harder and more firm. After about 30 mins of compressions, the Ambulance had arrived with a paramedic. The girl was pronouced legally dead. After an autopsy was done, we found out that she has internal bleeding, and that the chest compressions were acting like a vacuum and filling her organs with blood. My chest compressions is what probably helped kill that girl, and there is nothing i can do about it.
Also, I used to have hair down to my chin, I would still have it, if it wasnt for one of my friends having brain cancer. He had a tumor the size of a ping pong ball sitting in the back of the lower cranium. It took two day surgeries to remove the tumor. He was humiliated because they had to shave his head, to save his life. So me, and all of his friends went and done the same to our heads. Im finally getting hair back, but there is nothing i wouldnt do for a real friend of mine
Two days ago I was called out to a house that is down the road from me. The call had came out as a 55 year old male with difficulty breathing. I got there and went around the back of the house to see one of my old bosses in a full arrest. I can do CPR and focus on many people, but for some reason, seeing my old boss on the ground made me choke. Luckily I snapped out of it, and was able to assist the paramedic that showed up on scene. My Boss is okay (we hope) but i cant help but wonder what I will have next, and if i can handle it being someone that I know as well as i did my boss.
