Unsoundwaves
This whole journal is music-related. Nothing to see here, move on.
Some bits and pieces about the recent Christmas haul...
Couldn't be arsed to write about it at the time, so here we go.
- Bruce Cockburn - Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws - 1979
Widely regarded as one of Canadian singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn's best albums, and for good reason. It has some pretty good acoustic guitar passages, and contains what is one of his most famous songs, "Wondering Where the Lions Are." Very good, but new fans are advised to start with 1984's Stealing Fire.
- Opeth - Lamentations {DVD} - 2004
A DVD documenting a show by the band when touring behind new records "Deliverance" and "Damnation" - the first half depicts a performance of the latter in its entirety. For that alone, this is a worthwhile item for Opeth fans. There's a CD version, too, but I don't have that, nor have I seen it for sale anywhere lately.
- Jethro Tull - This Was {Special Edition} - 1968/2008
This is a pretty good package, but I'm still not so sure it was necessary, as most of the contents are available on the old remaster, and this isn't exactly what you'd call a landmark album, either; I'd rather have an expanded version of Stand Up, which is a far superior record.
- Megadeth - So Far, So Good... So What! {Remaster} - 1988/2003
I had an old copy of this, but it was so beat up, that I decided it was time to get a newer copy. Fortunately, I was not disappointed; this has a better mix (in my opinion) than the original. So, even if you have this album already, you might want to pick up this version.
- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! - 2008
Okay, so I haven't listened to the whole thing yet. I got it because I've heard nothing but good about this guy, so I decided to see what he was all about. He's pretty damn good, and I quite like his voice. His singing style (particularly on the title track) reminds me a lot of Frank Zappa, actually. Not so sure why.
- Wire - Pink Flag - 1977
This was among the albums that I've realized, over the years, that it was necessary for me to own. So, I finally got hold of a copy. It's not the easiest thing to listen to for me, because it consists of such short songs which, while not an issue itself, lends itself to repeated tiny little stops and starts between songs, which is quite odd... not to mention, I'm more familiar with the R.E.M. cover of "Strange," which sounds noticeably different.

I have two CDs, Bruce Cockburn's 1973 "Night Vision" and OOMPH!'s 2004 "Wahrheit oder Pflicht" still owed to me over Amazon, but they're on back order, so, in theory, I'll get those one of these days.
