Neah, just read it... -.-
The Way They Might (Updated 6-27)
a u t h o r ’s n o t e

I don’t exactly remember how it happened. It was late one evening when I had met this strange creature, and by morning my life had changed forever.

There are several ways to write this story, I thought. She could be new there, he could be new there, they could both be new there. She could stumble onto him, he onto her, or somebody could introduce them to each other. It could start with one of them nearly dying and being saved by the other. Or they could both be in danger and be saved by a passer by. They could both be complete freaks, or she could and he could be nerdy. I didn’t know how to start this story. She could tell it, he could tell it, they could switch off telling it, it could be a book about somebody reading a book and their tale would be printed within the pages, or there could be a narrator. The person could be writing a story; but are they in our world or in their dangerous fantasy? This was rather vexing. I just might have to write it in all those different ways. Maybe I will. But however I do decide to tell this story, I shall try to straighten the so-called facts from what didn’t happen. I could compile this into a series of long short-stories.

I have made up mind. I will write one part from the girl’s view and the part that comes after that shall be written in the boy’s view. Remember, first person thoughts are in italics. Third person thoughts are in between ~…~. It should work. Leave a comment, please. Oh well. Things don’t always happen the way they might.

There’s some explaining to do before anything else happens. In the world, there are creatures nearly everywhere you can imagine. Not just everyday ones, but fantastical ones. Mythical creatures. These ‘other’ creatures consist of various demons, nekos, kitsunes, ghouls, vampires, werewolves, goblins, witches, undead, sirens, faeries, ANYTHING you can imagine. Most of them live in Europe alongside humans. The more solitary ones live in… solitude. These creatures can live anywhere they please though. They are people. Not human, but people nonetheless. They do what they need to survive. Most of them, that is. Not all of them are kind or peaceful. Actually, a rather large portion of them are ‘evil’ or cruel. This world is your world. So stop breathing, watch, listen, remember. And most importantly, accept what’s around you…

It was 8 o’ clock pm and I was walking through Kensington like I did every weekend. The moon shone brightly through the trees and a cool mist settled above the ground. I hummed softly to myself. “And I’m quite aware we’re dying…” I sung. But from there, everything happened really fast. There was rustling from behind a bush and before I could move, I had been pinned to the ground by the shoulders. His yellow eyes glowed softly in the faint light.
“Not dying yet.” He growled. And he add a strange accent. “It’s been too long since I’ve eaten…” My eyes widened. It was rather uncommon to find a demon that hadn’t eaten. They lived like humans did, most of them. I waited for him to do something. He licked my cheek and I twitched.
“Wait!” I yelled. “I at least want to know your name before you kill me.” He boomed with laughter, hesitating a moment. “I’m Tote--” I cut him off, kicking him in the gut. “SORRY!!!” I tried to run out of there as fast as I could. From there, it was all running. He was gaining on me, and I was already tired. ‘Tote’ was fast for being half-starved. I looked behind me and he was gone, but I was still running. For a moment. Then I collided face-first into him.
“H-How did you?! W-What?” I stuttered. He glared down at me. We were out of the trees and it was easier to tell his features. He had wolf ears and snowy hair. He looked slightly familiar. His cheeks were slightly sunken; he was starving. Maybe it was just that I was people-deprived, or maybe the ears were irresistible, but I wasn’t just going to leave him there. I stopped staring and looked down at my feet. We stood there waiting for one of us to do something.
He sighed. “I-I’m n-not going to eat you… My name is Toteke.” I’m not really sure about what happened after that.
“O-Okay…I’m Selies.” I suddenly worried. Now he knew that I was the conductor of the British Army. And to make matters worse, I recognized him now. This was the President of Russia that was standing right in front of me. HOW STUPID CAN I BE?! I mean, Russia and Britain ARE enemies, right? “Neh…Haha.” I looked down. My thought was replied to.
“It is ok. You are not in any danger. Yet. Get away from here and don’t come back.”
I ran.

I think it started by me being chased by the Russian mafia. They were after me, and I had to get out. So what better the place to go than London? I thought. I was dead wrong.

I was up in a tree, asleep. Nobody had come around this part of the forest for a while, so I thought I would be okay there. I gazed up at the moon with my hands behind my head. I’d been on the run and I hadn’t had anything to eat. The mafia was crawling everywhere. But then… Something smelled really good. I fell out of the tree sniffing around for it and into a bush. I heard her say, “And I’m quite aware we’re dying.” Something came over me. I leapt out of the bush and tackled the girl to the ground. Her eyes were almost green. “Not dying yet.” I said. It came out more like a growl. “It’s been too long since I’ve eaten.” I watched her eyes widen in fear or shock.
I licked her cheek. I couldn’t help it, really. “Wait!” She squeaked. “I at least want to know your name before you kill me.” I half-laughed, half-growled.
“I’m Tote--” I was cut off when she kicked me in the gut. “SORRY!!!” She ran off. I doubled over a second then regained my sense of humanity. I ran after her. I didn’t want her to think I was some horrible creature. It’d be wrong for somebody to think that of the President of Russia. I appeared in front of her and she ran straight into me. I sighed. “I-I’m n-not going to eat you… My name is Toteke.”
“O-Okay. I’m Selies.” She muttered. I raised an eyebrow in interest. I then knew that she was the conductor of the British Army. I would’ve been dead if I’d killed her. I didn‘t want anything to happen to her with me there, or I‘d be blamed of course. So I said, "You are not in any danger. Yet. Get away from here and don’t come back.”
She ran.

I went back to my tree, hungry enough to eat my own foot. Or my tail. I would wait. I had three choices. One, go buy food and be killed by the Russian mafia. Two, wait here and starve to death. Or three, hope somebody unimportant comes by so I can eat them.

I’m sorry, but curiosity got the best of me. What was the President of Russia doing out in the middle of a forest in England? And starving? The next morning I packed a turkey sandwich and ran out the door of my condo, back to the forest. Come on out… You know you’re hungry… I returned to the spot where I had first seen him and took out the sandwich. This time, I was tackled in silence. “Hi.”
He stared down at me. “Hello.” He sniffed a moment, then frowned. “You have food on you.” I smiled pleasantly and nodded. Toteke stood up and crossed his arms. I took out the sandwich and held it out to him. He looked at it with blazing interest, then took it from me.
“It’s turkey. I hope you don’t mind mustard.” I said, watching him eat it. The sandwich was gone in a few bites. “Um… I have to get going.” I turned and began to walk off. I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up at Toteke. “Yes?”
“Thank you.”
We walked.

I wandered into the Nation of Fools. It was some haunted, abandoned carnival, the kind you’d find on an old episode of Scooby Doo. I kind of liked it here. A roller coaster towered above me. It almost looked like it was made out of bone. I sat down at the base of it, drowsy. Something was climbing above me, but I was too tired to notice.

———

Rosaline, a raccoon and fox anthro, crawled up the skeleton coaster, about fifty feet above Selies. Toteke, meanwhile, was asleep on the tracks below. Rose glided down onto an old game booth, camouflaging herself, then sneaking behind the drowsy, unaware Selies. She snatched her wallet and climbed back up the coaster. Toteke rolled over and off the edge of the tracks. “Holy--!” He grabbed onto a landing. “Phew… I’m okay!” Rosaline shook her head and climbed over to Toteke, pulling him up by the armpits. Selies’ wallet was still in her hand. “Hey, that doesn’t belong to you!” Toteke climbed back onto the tracks and took the wallet back. Rosaline didn’t say anything and started to sneak away. He grabbed her and held her close. “You’re not going anywhere.”
I shook my head, a little bit more awake. “I thought I heard Toteke…” I looked up at the top of the coaster. “Yup…” Toteke was holding what appeared to be a girl. She was struggling to get away. “Toteke, let go of her! I’ll call Kasora!” This went on for a while. He yelled back: “Hah! Never! I’ll take this pretty little vixen back to my den!” I finally called Kasora, who did not answer. Rosaline was screaming things like: “*****!! I’M TOO YOUNG!” Toteke slid down the side of the roller coaster and ran into the forest, I followed, naturally.
