 Chapter 4
I sat in the grass, staring at the nearby tree line, leaning on my hands, my backside slightly in pain. The horrible noise made by... whatever it was chasing me was deafening, but I was barely aware of anything other than my own terror. What could shake the earth so?
I could see the trees just within the forest collapsing now. The crushing, cracking thunder as they were pushed over and shattered by my pursuer.
Then it emerged, the trees nearest me pushed aside as if they were nothing more than the grass I was in. I held absolutely still, half because I was immobile from panic, other than my heart, which seemed to beat hard enough to shake my whole body, and half because I hoped it wouldn't see me.
It was bigger than I had even thought. I had thought it would be something like the elephants I had seen when the king from the east had come to visit us. This was easily three times as tall. It was a think seemingly made entirely from muscle, from the massive paws, bigger than my body, to the thick necks that held up its three heads. Were it not for that unusual feature, it would have resembled a giant version of the guard dogs father kept in pens away from his children. Its massive jaws held horrible teeth, some of which jutted from it's mouths, even when it had them closed. Drool hung from one mouth. THe eyes were a bloodshot red. Strangely, it was at that moment that I thought of my drunkard uncle. His eyes got that way when he had too much to drink. But Uncle Daniel was merely a sot. He told you how much he loved you. This beast seemed unlikely to do that.
My hopes for remaining hidden were dashed. Before I even had a chance to think about how it would probably be able to smell me, all six eyes focused on me. It's mouths curled in to snarls, then it threw it's heads back into the air and howled.
The sound was horrible, much worse than the growling had been, and too near to ignore. I threw my hands to my ears and covered them. I'm certain I screamed, but I couldn't hear myself over the howling.
The noise stopped and the eyes returned to me. I scrambled backward, through the grass, but it simply stepped forward slowly, easily keeping pace with its huge stride. A low growl emanated from all three throats. It seemed to rumble and shake the very air. The growl seemed to be a physical thing pushing on my skin.
The center head lowered toward me. it's hot, stinking breath was oppresive. It's mouth gaped wide until it was all I can see.
It yelped suddenly, popping my ears, and it pulled away, growling and barking from different heads. an instant later I could see that one of the heads was bleeding from the ear, a huge cut running across the skin.
I wondered what was happening, but couldn't tell. What had hurt the beast? The heads looked into the sky, and I followed its gaze.
At first I saw nothing, but then a speck appeared, coming from the sun. It resolved as I noticed it was moving very fast. It... it was a woman. A woman flying through the sky, straight at us. She seemed to be on fire. All of her but the wicked looking, gleaming steel blade she held before her. She shouted loudly as the dog howled at her.
And I stood dumbfounded.
