It was the beginning of Natalie’s new life; she had moved into a new home and was learning about living on one’s own. Times were not as tough as they could have been, they were nice and normal, and Natalie had no problems with getting used to life without her little sister Amelia and her Mother and Father. Normal life for a normal girl right? But Natalie was not as normal as people thought, Natalie had a secret wish she had had since her years as a child, only her closest of friends even knew what she was talking about if she mentioned it. Natalie didn’t like letting people in, though being a pleaser she let everyone in, she let them in so far that it hurt. Her new home would be a nice start for a new life. Graduating College had been good to her; she was twenty-three and working as a dentist. She had considered marrying, settling down, maybe having a child which she had never really thought about, perhaps adoption. But nothing had prepared our little Natalie, our little mouse in her new little house, for what she would soon discover. When you hear “monster” do you think of a typical stereotype of a big looming beast, its fangs dripping with slime and blood, thick fur matted and missing in big patches? Well inside Natalie’s heart, that deepest wish was to be a monster, a loved monster. Hear me when I say Natalie had her reasons, perhaps the hatred she harbored for herself or her never ending desire to stop being such a push over, she herself knew not of her decision. All she knew was she didn’t see a big scary terrifying monster, she saw a misunderstood creature, who no one dared come close too, who had stories told about it. Natalie wanted to be known, but wanted to blend in, her memories of school were erased as soon as possible, they were not bad memories, but they brought her pain. She could draw, she could write, sing, and act whatever you wanted from her she would do. She could imitate a cat and meow and purr, she’d tell riddles and rhymes, but when it came to it, she couldn’t say no. She could to drugs of course, drinking and such, for Natalie was a good girl, also to a guy she didn’t like, why suffer the pain right? But our little mouse couldn’t say no to her wishes, it is difficult for all of us. And tonight our little mouse’s dream may come true. “No, I can’t sorry,” Natalie said talking to her mother who wanted her to visit for the holidays, “I know, but…Ok, I’m sorry. It’s just…No, no it isn’t you; I just have to work…No they won’t let me off…Sorry…Yeah…Bye Mom, I love you…Bye.” Natalie hung up the phone after she heard the dial tone. She turned her attention to her T.V. show, and noticed the fire dying, “Hmm, no more wood?” she asked herself with a sigh. Natalie slipped on her black hoody that was hanging over the chair and she opened the back door. Stepping out onto her porch suddenly her mind was interrupted. THUMP!! Natalie jumped backwards, running into the door almost breaking the screen, “Whose there!?” she asked holding onto the tiny pull-strings to calm her now swirling mind. She stood motionless for what felt like hours, and there was no sound, the only thing she heard was the leaves that had fallen from the tree rustling in the wind. “Oh, the fire probably died by now!” Natalie said running down and opening the door to the space under the house. She liked it because it was like going down below to another world. All the fire wood was down here, but there was no light, blindly Natalie groped the air trying to find the familiar wall where the fire wood was leaning on. Natalie finds the wood and starts gathering some up, one…two, three…four. Then she straightens up, using her free and to feel along the wall again. Suddenly her hand glides on across something warm, and soft, not like fur, but flesh, and clothes. Natalie gasps loudly pulling her hand away and a bright red eye shines in the darkness following by a loud moan. Natalie screams dropping the wood, something moans in pain and Natalie screams running out shutting the door, rushing up to her house, closing the door and locking it and the bolt then jumping on the couch and shivering. ‘What was that?’ she wonders while she shakes, looking at the fire which was now just hot red ashes. She clasps her hands together and bites her lip wondering again what was down there, a man? No, no, man’s eyes don’t glow red, but then what was it!? Natalie was first to cry usually, but she was too scared to even move. Whatever it was, it was still under her house, what if it came up and got her in the middle of the night? Like a…like a monster would. At this thought Natalie paused, “a monster?” she silently asked herself in a quivering meek voice, she looked back at the double locked door. “Eh, forget about it Natalie, it was probably just some animal, yeah its eyes just caught on a light or something,” she said smiling and shakily standing up. Natalie went to her room and took off her black hoody; changing her clothes to some sleeping pants and a grey t-shirt. She lay down, holding onto her pillow, it was times like these that she wished she was still at home. Within no time she was asleep. Creak…creakkk…creakkk “Huh?” Natalie mumbled opening her heavy eyes. Creak. She leaned forward in her bed sitting up, then froze, her breath catching in her throat, her stomach churned. Creak…creak. Sitting in her old rocking chair in the corner, was the man who was under her house. Natalie’s eyes filled with tears, every breath was chopped and short, she laid back down shaking as she thought, ‘I’m gonna die! No!! No, I-I didn’t want it to end here!! God, no please.’ She sobbed silently and the creaking stopped. Now she heard him walk across the floor, to her bedside now. He crouched beside the bed, coming to eyelevel with her, that one red eye still glowing like a cat’s eye. “W…w-w-what do you want?” she asked through chokes and sobs, even after all the courage she mustered up to say that, it only came across as a small, shaky plea. He didn’t speak, his silhouette was that of a man, but an eye like that could not belong to a human. “Stop crying,” he said in a voice that chilled her to the bone. She ceased the sobbing, but tears kept rolling. He raised his hand to her face and she drew back with a sharp breath, he hesitated, and then gently wiped the tears from her face. “So, what’s your name huh?” he asked wiping her fresh tears on his clothes. From what she could see, he had a pale face, his right eye was covered by his bangs and he was in all black. The hand he was wiping on his ripped black t-shirt that covered a long sleeve white shirt had long elegant fingers with pointed nails that were painted black. By the looks of him he was about twenty-four at the most; his hair was long and black, pointed at the top and was in a short ponytail that looked unkempt. “I…I’m Natalie,” she said trying not to make it obvious that she was examining him. “Well Natalie,” he said rising, “name’s Dallen,” he takes a bow, grinning. His teeth are sharp and pointed, Natalie stares at them then blushing says, “Pleased to meet you.” “Ah the pleasure is mine,” he says taking her hand from the comforter and kissing it. Her face went red, she was shocked and those teeth perplexed her, also his eye and why was the other covered…was this man, this thing…a monster? “What are…what were you doing down there?” she asked trying to put together what was going on. She had convinced herself that she was either dreaming or had been slipped something, so she wasn’t as scared. “Sleeping,” he said shrugging, she reached for the lamp switch, “m-may I?” she asked before turning it on. “Sure go ahead,” he said looking at the lamp. She turned on the light and turned to look at him. He was wearing jeans with black combat boots that had a thin layer of dried mud on the bottom, and his shirt was black with rips in it, showing the white long sleeve underneath. He had a pinky ring on his right hand, and his eyes were rimmed, she couldn’t tell if it was eyeliner or sleep deprivation, though he said he had been resting. His ears were long and pointed with at least five piercings in each, and one lip ring to the side as though he only got one piece to the snakebite. “You checkin’ me out Natalie?” he asked grinning. Those teeth!! Natalie’s cheeks went red again, though they had been the entire time from being nervous, now it was because he was being a bit friendly. “No! I was just…I haven’t seen a man dress like this since I was nineteen,” she said awkwardly sitting up and pulling the covers up to her chest. “Heh, yeah I change around,” he said and started walking around the room looking at everything. He stopped by the bookshelf, “Oh, nice selection.” “Thanks,” it was strange, you were so calm with him in here, and who was he!? He picked up a book Stranger in a Strange Land and turned it, looking at the tattered cover. He reminded Natalie of the book, dark and worn out looking, now if only the book had staples on it, then it would look more like him
