German squirrel on a rampage injures 3 people
72-year-retiree dispatches rowdy rodent with a crutch

BERLIN - An aggressive squirrel attacked and injured three people in a German town before a 72-year-old pensioner dispatched the rampaging animal with his crutch.

The squirrel first ran into a house in the southern town of Passau, leapt from behind on a 70-year-old woman, and sank its teeth into her hand, a local police spokesman said on Thursday.

With the squirrel still hanging from her hand, the woman ran onto the street in panic, where she managed to shake it off.

The animal then entered a building site and jumped on a construction worker, injuring him on the hand and arm, before he managed to fight it off with a measuring pole.

"After that, the squirrel went into the 72-year-old man's garden and massively attacked him on the arms, hand and thigh," the spokesman said. "Then he killed it with his crutch."

The spokesman said experts thought the attack may have been linked to the mating season or because the squirrel was ill

Squirrel Causes Downtown Outages

A pesky squirrel was the cause of power outages in downtown Lakeland on Friday morning, said Lakeland Electric General Manager Jim Stanfield.

Power to downtown businesses and traffic signals at Massachusetts, Kentucky and Tennessee avenues shut down about 11 a.m. and was restored about an hour and a half later, Stanfield said.

The Lakeland Police Department on Massachusetts Avenue was shut down also, but a back-up generator kicked in and restored power, LPD Lt. Troy Young said.

"The squirrel shorted out a piece of equipment at the Lake Mirror station," Stanfield said.

Because most of the equipment is underground, the work crew had to take extra care, Stanfield said.

Did a squirrel burn down the house?
Blue Island fire destroys home, leaves one crispy critter

Firefighters suspect a squirrel is the culprit behind a blaze that claimed a house in Blue Island over the weekend.

Judging from an arched power line abutting the two-story home, the fire was likely sparked by electricity, Lt. Mike Kaliski said.

"We're looking at (the squirrel's) involvement," Kaliski said of an ongoing investigation that the critter may have been climbing on the wire that sparked the devastating house fire on the 2300 block of Walnut Street.

One of the firefighters who responded to the blaze -- which broke out about 6 a.m. Saturday morning -- was treated for a minor injury at St. Francis Hospital. He's since been released, Kaliski said.

Residents of the home were away. And the squirrel was the only casualty of the flames.

The incident marks the second time this week that a squirrel was suspected of causing havoc in the Southland.

A woman slammed into a light pole and flipped her SUV in Burbank on Thursday morning after swerving to avoid a fuzzy creature that she spotted in the road, officials said.

The driver and two passengers were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
