The Journal of VO
Traumatic Experiences of Admin Life...
It's been a while...
... since I've updated this journal. Lots of stuff has been going on, tweaking of the fishing system, development of future projects, regular development stuff, as well as planning for future development.

On a good note, we've finally released fishing. On a bad note, users are exploiting specific things about it. I realize that this kind of thing is inevitable, but sometimes it gets disheartening. crying

You spend god knows how many hours working to make something a worthwhile experience to people, and then a small handful of people expose or spread all of the secrets out before things are even released. And because of that, certain things are spoiled, little is left to the imagination, and people are left with an experience that's already laid out before them. sweatdrop

Personally, I find that games with a lot of secrets and stuff are more engaging. For me, it's that moment when you've just discovered something in the natural progression of the game that gives you that "feeling." The one that makes you go "wow" did I just do/find/accomplish that?

For this same reason, I avoid strategy guides like the plague. Who wants to play a game if it's played by just following directions? For me, it's the mystery of it all. To solve something for myself. That makes me want to play a game.

Which brings me to another note. Cheating. Cheating is NOT GOOD for GAIA. Cheating HURTS Gaia. It hurts GAIA, its users, as well as development. As you know, the administrators of Gaia work very hard to ensure that users are treated fairly in all cases whenever possible. When people cheat, we have to react in order to keep things fair for everyone. And whenever we are forced to do that, we lose valuable development time. Please, if you ever find an exploit or a bug, please report it to a moderator/administrator immediately. You'll not only be doing us a favor, but doing everyone on Gaia a favor, including yourself.

But anyways, no massive event will be coming for Thanksgiving. But we hope to give you a pleasant, less hectic Xmas event in December. Hopefully, we will still be able to deliver a few extra surprises when you least expect it. xp

By the way, your journal is exploding. O_o

commentCommented on: Fri Nov 26, 2004 @ 09:48am
whee I actually made a thread about this, but I won't spam a link to it here... it's in my journal anyhow. I can't stand cheaters and people who try to exploit others for their own gain. Worse is when they get innocent people involved like the ones who exploited the fishing glitch did.

What made me sad though, was to see everyone turning on the admins for their actions taken to cut out the cheaters and at least temporarily lock out the ones that they had traded with... I felt compelled to try and point out to them that their anger was being directed in the wrong place.

It's the cheaters and greedy people who care for themselves only that deserve the anger and not the people trying to crack down on them. They're the ones who cause the problems.

I hope ya'll aren't too disheartened over this... whee There ARE those of us who understand why, have faith that you are all doing the best you can to be fair to the possibly innocent while showing no mercy to the guilty.

I don't mind getting previews of things... it kind of makes it exciting... but, it's generally more problematic than anything when someone digs up something through devious means that wasn't meant to be known yet. Rumors fly, speculation ensues, arguments start... confusion reigns... xp Y'all give us previews now and then, and I think that's plenty for me. 3nodding

It really sucks that people had to exploit that gold glitch. But it's rather dumbfounding if they actually thought they wouldn't get caught. XD; Gotta laugh at that. whee Even though it was extreamly hard on everyone working on Gaia, ya need to laugh. If not at that, then at something. That way, ya will feel... Somewhat better when the bad things happen.

I have to disagree with ya on something though, VO-san. >_> Sometimes... strategy guides can save ya a looooot of money on controlers. xd One can get so irked at a game that they just snap things in half. >> Or break the disks... ^^; So sometimes, those OSG's can be a money/life/time savor.

Anyway... I really hope you, and the other administrator's have been having a better time now. Seems most of the glitches are gone. << From what I can tell anyway. ^_^;;

PS: >>;; Sorry for the spelling errors... Tired as all get out, and I'm not up for crashing my computer by opening Word, and running it through a spell checker. xp

I haven't had a chance to give the fishing game a big workout yet, but my brother is in love with it. Great job! 3nodding

Don't worry about putting too much effort into the christmas event, it's a time to spend with friends and family. That includes users and admins alike 3nodding (Can't wait to see the snow again, though)

I usually wait till I beat the game a couple of times to whip out the guide and see what I missed. 3nodding

Keep up the good work! whee

Just bored... browsing around stuff. You finally updated your journal! xd

Eh, most of Gaia's users are too into "being the best" in order to follow the rules... It's tough to "make a living" around here.

But as for all the thoughts on games, I agree with you entirely. Strategy guides are overrated, and even I created a game once, and got cheesed at all the basic glitches just because of one "missing character" in the code.

VO, as always, I wish you luck with everything you're doing, and appreciate it. Just try to keep up with things more often. xd

Yours truly,
The Vampiric Raindeer FlameDragonNeo

Amen VO, AMEN! This is something EVERYONE should read. I myself, also hate cheating, but when it comes out, and I see it, I just gotta look at it. I can't help myself. But I'll keep this in mind, as a strengthener to me so I won't cheat anymore! Thanks VO! I really appriciate this.

Well, if you can, try not to take people's interests in knowing what will be personally. While you like surprises and get the most enjoyment out of a game when you have to discover things on your own, there are plenty of people who enjoy a game more with a strategy guide. I wouldn't say either position is wrong, or less respectable, but just a matter of personal taste.

I actually, love strategy guides. I like to know in advance what path I should take to meet my end goals so that I won't blow them and have to start all over again. I am sure I don't need to tell you about being pressed for time. I also just love to know what I am involved in, and as much about it as I can.

I heard once it's an intrinsic difference in the male and female brains. Wheras guys would rather just jump into a situation and deal with things on the fly, females perfer to gather as much information as they can, and plot out a course before starting out.

I don't think that knowing what fish will be coming spoils it. I mean, I'd love to capture a celocanth (sp?). If I knew for certain that one was in a certain pond, I'd probably be more willing to devote time to the fishing game just for the goal of earning my favorite fish. While I certainly don't think it is fair to those who enjoy surprises to post spoilers in message headers, I don't think that those who seek to find out what will come appreciate the game any less. In fact, they are probably heavily obsessed themselves and just want to find out what will happen.

I mean, myself I have a lust to find out more information on the NPCs, particularly Gino and if the birthday in his profile is really his birthday, and if that's supposed to imply that they age in real time. However, even if I got that answer, doesn't mean I would be less interested in the site. There's always another thing to search for answers or wonder over. heart

As much hardwork the Mods put into creating the Fishing System, I can honestly say I dislike it (I'm looking more forward to the Battling System, mind you). On the other hand, I can't blame you for mentioning how disheartening it is when members cheat or use guides to find out every tiny little secret. It's like laying out the story for a whole ARP (advanced role-plays--out of Gaia, usually) in front of the participants. Little surprises are often pleasant.

Uh, this is not to say I don't use FAQs/Walkthroughs when I play video games. I'm currently using one to play Shadow Hearts 2, but it's a translated FAQ from the Japanese version of the game, so some few secrets/surprises are still left for me to discover or laugh over. Right...sorry, I'm ranting right now. o_O;

It is a bit annoying when people do spoil things for you... But I'd like to say... I really love the Gaia fishing even if it does have bugs. Sometimes it may be the bugs that make the fishing even more exciting because of the time it takes to fix it and finally be able to do something... I would also like to say that the fishing is very addictive sweatdrop

I agree with you for the most part, but I also think half the fun is to see how much you can find out about something beforehand. (I love speculation, what else can I say?) It's also fun to see how many things you are right about, if any. whee

Still, it does break my heart that people would take advantage of the system that way, and mess everything up for us folk who follow the rules. I'm glad to see that you guys know how to handle them, too.

*Gives you a big hug* heart Thank you, once again, for all the hard work you do for us! I can't wait for Christmas. whee (Mind if I speculate about what's going to happen elsewhere? blaugh )

I agree...allthough on a few games I've played cheats are neccessary though I hate using them and guides do make the game less fun...especially on Gaia where half of the cheats are fake anyway. But that's beyond the point. If it weren't for cheaters things would come along faster. But anyway thank you to all the Gaian administrators for without you we would never get anything from fishing to forums to fighting!

Personally I see Gaia as a world away from just a forum... cheating really does hurt other people and Gaia itself. sad It actually reminds me more of what happened with Ragnarok Online, though tame in comparison. Hackers couldn't stand that they couldn't have RO for free, so they hacked into it and destroyed pretty much everything... eek Setting Gravity back years in development and forcing them to start from scratch. All for selfish reasons...

On a less morbid note, I do agree with you on the part about strategy guides. Being surprised is always the best (which is why I always open my trunks/boxes!). But... I'm the type who usually misses a lot of stuff on my first play of a game. gonk Haha.

Can we call a cheater the girl that donated to gaia more than 5k in real life and ruining everyones fun?

We werent able to sell some november letters and after we told her to hold on and let us win some gold too she started to say that we were stealing all the gold that she is suppose to win for her.

I think that was unfailt completely but for what i see for Lanzer or any admin wasn't because it was a good donation to help.

It is fun to sell stuff on gaia but atleast set a limit on selling letters or something because it wasn't fun what happened in this Month (November)

Gah, all people seem to care about is getting tons of gold. Am I the only one who enjoys the game and appreciate all the hard work that was put into it? When it came out, all I could see in the Q&F was complaining. Whine whine whine, it ate my gold, it's too hard, whine whine whine. I just wish people would shape up and be grateful for once. You and the admin do all this stuff for us, and I rarely see thank-you threads. I'm sorry Gaia has been overpopulated with jerks. :[
