Thoroughly distracted, Muerte does not hear the approaching troll. It's such a brief thing, but the sudden contact—the touch—brings him back down hard. It's like hitting a concrete wall, lips curled with utmost disgust, eyes flashing through a range of incomprehensible emotions but mostly fury. The redblood continued past, bumped into Zeffer, gives him a sneer but at least some acknowledgement. Like every other damnable troll in this ******** facility, she's gone as quickly as she came.

It's absolutely infuriating. Muerte was good at seething and brewing in his own rage, and while he was very expressive few things ever came of his anger, save the sarcastic insults and what not. His fingers twitched. The shadows on the wall mocked him.

It would have been one thing to experience the redblood, but before he knows it Zeffer has his arms draped on him too, touching him. Protruding fangs bore into his own lip as he bit down, shaking with a scarcely contained outburst. Listening to the two banter made him want to scream. He was ******** tired of being here, down here, in the presence of these idiots. This was a mistake. It was all a goddamn mistake and damn him for thinking he could withstand a miserable week. He'd own up to it for once, hell, he was wrong.

He's still smoldering as the blueblood vanishes into the darkness.

The shadows howled in his wake.

It was like a switch flipped. A mousetrap in his brain—snap! Who was foolish enough to set it off? Who had been caught in it? Did it hurt, did it sting? A hiss escapes, and had he the capabilities and resources he was sure it would have been hot and vivid like steam. He whirls on Aprife without a second thought, "I don't know, should we?!" His voice is a bark, a snarl, harsh and hard; a hammer to an iron. "Maybe we could all go off on our own little ******** adventure. Come back and have a little tea party."

"Sure, oh sure, yes, let's. Anything would be better than standing around with you insufferable pricks." The words gush out the way rivers flood, "Why the hell am I even here? This is the shitty organization that you talked so highly about? Pushing advancement? Right into the goddamn ground. You're all a pack of imbeciles!"

No, he was no longer having any of this. An unfortunate crate on the floor became his target, boot coming to kick the empty cube roughly into the cave wall. "It's more organized now—What the hell was it you said? We need trolls who know what they're doing; ******** obviously. Tell me—which was it?; the war or was it prison? Which was it that turned you stupid fools into complete ******** morons!?"

A haughty, frustrated half-laugh came out in place of an indignant scream, "Well, I guess some trolls here were already halfwitted dipshits to begin with. I suppose it's my fault for assuming anything tied to that insufferable blueblood would turn out to be even slightly worthwhile."

Ah, there it was. Aprife knew something had been off, he could feel it, he could tell in the way the greenblood's shoulders shook. It wouldn't be a big deal, he figured, nothing he couldn't handle, nothing he wasn't already accustomed to. He liked to think he could handle most anything, they'd been through so much and he'd certainly come out alive if nothing else. Aprife was flexible, he bent before he broke. It was fine, and it would still be fine, even after Muerte was done with his petty little outburst.

That's what it felt like at first, even despite the awful edge of anger, the cold cut of his tone. Laughing it off had been his first plan. Haha, a fairytale adventure, what a precious insult. Yes, that's right, join our tea party, you can be the mad hatter. That's what it should have been, but as Muerte rampaged on like a wild animal let loose from its cage, the yellowblood's good humor quickly escaped him, as well.

Take two, he'd let this a*****e get it all out, be the big man, because y'know, sometimes little kids just had to pitch their fits before things became right as rain again. There would be no laughter, only solemn acceptance, and they'd move on, there was business to attend to. Surely the both of them would be better for it, the tension would be cleared, like a night without stars.

Pushing advancement? Right into the goddamn ground.

Not everyone could understand the significance of what they stood for, Muerte would come around in due time.

You're all a pack of imbeciles!

It wasn't as if this was the worst thing he'd been called, not by a long shot, nor was this current challenger innocent besides this incident.

Tell me—which was it?; the war or was it prison?

Standing naked in a winter snowstorm would've felt better than the way his chest did now, so frozen it stung like daggers, such a stark contrast to the heat of his skin. It made his hands clammy. "You have no idea-" he started, but the greenblood's onslaught ran rampant right over his attempt, silencing him, but not ending the swell of disgust in his throat.

This anger still felt foreign sometimes, hell, a lot of the time. Aprife had never been one easily ruffled, not by foolish things, or much of anything, really. It wasn't as if he never got upset, were he to claim the contrary, he'd be a liar. This was so much different, though, raw and awful, bubbling from his gut like an actual fire had been lit beneath his skin. Sometimes he could force it down, but other times it was all he could be, and those moments felt nothing if not crippling when he had a chance to reflect on them.

Still, the good doctor had no idea what they had truly been through, no idea of the emotional burdens kept hidden under layers of joviality and fun. The rage at his cycle of misfortune was so tangible now that it bled from his palms as he crushed his hands into fists. He couldn't will it back down, Muerte kept ******** talking and Aprife couldn't force away the anger he felt in that moment.

It was all over when Zeffer became a subject of the greenblood's ire and ridicule. That was enough. Aprife was done dealing with this little pissbaby's boohooing over s**t he hadn't even the slightest possibility of understanding.

"Shut the ******** up," he hissed, sharply shoving Muerte's right shoulder with obvious force. "You have no idea what you're even ******** prattling on about. I don't wanna hear another goddamn word." His chest heaved. Why couldn't he yell like he wanted? All that came out was a gravely voice he still didn't recognize.

"Why are you even here? If you're so intent on being a one sweep old wiggler, then go the ******** home. We're trying to make things right, Mr. High and Mighty Shitstain, why the hell do you think I recruited you in the first place? At least we're doing something instead of whining for someone to wipe our asses and tell us everything's okay." His throat hurt. It felt so dry and awful, but he held back the itchy cough in favor of one last comment.

"Make up your damn mind, because I don't have time to keep babysitting someone who'd rather b***h than do any actual work."

Mid gawk. His eyes are surprisingly wide under the thick windows of his glasses, green-flecked and sunken and blazing with anger but also something different, new—was it fear? Not quite. Something akin to it, surely, but not fear. Shock? Closer.

A wake up call, if he was keen enough to acknowledge it as such. For Muerte Perist, he already outmatched everyone. He was perfect—born perfect, would always be perfect; grasping for those straws that tantalized him and drew him higher and higher and higher still—

Unfortunately for him, his narcissism drew him too high. Even a bird could only soar so close to the heavens before they burned and fell, down and down and down... further still, the greenblood only registers the sound of his saw smacking into the ground before he too is resting on the murky floor, now consumed by the shadows that so mocked him moments prior.

Now he was the mockery.

He was stunned into a silence, mouth drawing quickly into a tense line that matched his own posture, fingers fisting up in the dirt and dust beneath them. He wants to speak again, but even when his mouth opens no words come out. It was as if the storm had since passed; no rain was left, he was a void. Empty. The anger and frozen to something like exhaustion, and he became very aware in that instant how tired he was, muscles weary, temple throbbing with the beginnings of a headache as the yellowblood hissed and spat at him, voice but a whisper.

His eyes lingered on the scar marked to his throat rather than his eyes full of vehement passion. He hadn't known Aprife prior to the incident that so... defined him now, and while he never cared too a part of him still wondered—mused—; it was strange that he would ever consider the thoughts and feelings and experiences of someone other than him. Perhaps having them sneered down at his face was a bit of an eye opener.

Instead he finally tore his eyes away to the ground with a ticked off tch, "Whatever..." His usual, very pretentious method of rambling had left him now. He had returned to a core state. There was a time when it was very like him to stay quiet and silent, observing and never speaking. It was a time drawn back before the sardonic presence had taken root, before the cynicism had flourished. He hated being reminded; he was perfect god dammit, what did this goddamn yellowblood know?

What did he know about that goddamn yellowblood?

Ah.

Carefully, he reached out for his saw, looking the weapon over so he had something better to give his attention to rather than the ground. "Whatever." he repeated, pursing his lips, huffing as he kept his gaze from the much taller troll before him.

There was a smug satisfaction in the way his perceived opponent hit the ground, but that only lasted as long as the rage did. It seeped out with every strained word, ebbing away from every limb, leaving a tingle in its wake. When it was gone, he felt more bothered than relieved, because whenever he couldn't control it like that, it felt like he was losing himself and that was a lonely, disturbing feeling if there ever was one. Since this issue arose, he tried to keep combating the anger, but he knew with unfortunate clarity that it was a crutch he'd have to deal with. Though he'd taken all these steps forward, he still found a pothole to trip in. It wasn't a constant one, but it was still there, lingering beneath the surface.

The simmering aggression in his eyes had died away, but he kept his gaze trained on Muerte all the same. It seemed as if they had both hit their walls, though the greenblood was still able to spit out a single whatever, followed not far behind by a second. Those words sounded irked, but not even a fraction of what had been spewing from his mouth before was present. Giving up so easily? No, Aprife didn't even know what Muerte was doing or what he was thinking, in that moment he couldn't quite read him.

Unclenching the fists he'd remade, the yellowblood finally turned away, holding there only a second longer before walking from the scene. "Do what you want." The invitation. Muerte could follow, or not, that was up to him. He would've liked to believe that he would continue on with them, suck it up and keep going, so things would remain on plan. Yet, he couldn't say for sure it would happen. He couldn't say for sure anything about Muerte Perist. It was easier to say he knew everything than to actually know, that was a discrepancy he'd have to learn to remedy.

It definitely wouldn't be easy. After all, what did he know about that goddamn greenblood?

For an instant he almost stopped, almost looked back, but he stayed resolved to keep moving, just like he had all those nights ago. For now, they had work to do.

Nothing.

At the end of the night, neither of them really knew anything about one another. Hell, Muerte didn't know jack about Aprife or Zeffer really, or anyone else here. Keep it that way. Muerte worked alone and he always would. Exceptions were made on a special basis, for his own gain, for...

...for his own gain, for his own gain. The saw felt very heavy in his hands for a moment, and he found himself vaguely perplexed as he glazed over the off-white tool. It didn't matter what happened to anyone else so long as he made it out alright in the end, because that's how it always had been and how it always would have been. He didn't need anybody else, and he had no desire for companionship either. His fingers clenched around the handle.

"Do what you want."

Well.

What did he want? Part of him knew he could have left it at that, returned home to the forests and eerie purple trees. Certainly if he had, he probably wouldn't have seen any more of Aprife, though Zeffer... Zeffer, unfortunately, lived very close by and Muerte wasn't sure he could ever escape him but regardless, all and any business with this place would be dropped, he could tell, he knew. This could be the end. Is that what he wanted?

He watched him go, turning swiftly around to fade into the system of tunnels. It seemed like an eternity before Muerte felt his ankles twitch, even longer before he realized he was at his feet. Part of him wanted to pause—brush the dust off his coat—but Aprife was already fading into the shadows, much like Zeffer had earlier though with much less enthusiasm and something more... solemn.

Muerte felt it. Everything seemed so very somber, and he couldn't help but stare at the sparsely lit candles pensively. The footsteps were getting quieter now. Soon the yellowblood would be gone without a trace, and Muerte could have his freedom. He could get out of this moronic dynasty, return to his science.

...but if he was here, shouldn't he see it through? It seemed very unprofessional and not very dignified to leave it here. It felt cold. Something chilled its way down his spine—a breeze that wasn't there—or perhaps just a feeling or emotion that he didn't have words to place it too. Inexplicably, he found himself willed forward, following the quiet taps that echoed in the long halls. He didn't dare to call out, but he didn't dare to stay behind with the shadows either.

Instead, he moved towards the light.

"miliue, thanks for coming with me.." he murmured softly, having been nervous about making a selection with any given team mates. Most had readily paired off and gone about their business. Maybe it was because he was a kid, or simply had been over looked but at least not everyone was trying to ignore him. That at least was reason enough to take on a brave stance.

"we should likely explore and get a feel for the lay of the tunnel syssstem. just encase i figure anyway" Stryke could barely make out where he was going. Shrugging as he tried to make his way in the darkness, he realized almost right away this was a sure fire way to get himself lost. Even with his lusus close by the kid felt uneasy. His eyes flickered back to one of his team mates, the tealblood he'd reunited with during the meeting. She'd been so kind to him...something he was eternally grateful for. The now young woman didn't have the ability to speak without the use of her board, but that didn't bother the young yellowblood.

Somewhere in the midst of his wandering in the dank, thick musty aired caverns he had unknowingly discovered a clue. It was odd being this far back in the mostly uncharted tunnel system...he hadn't even realized his findings but made note of the strange occurrence, silently moving a little closer to Mili and SkinkDad as if they could somehow protect him from his own mental direst. "strange..." he murmured before moving forward again, the tiny candle he’d managed to obtain enough to make their passing conversation manageable; even if Stryke had felt a bit guilty with running off with one especially without asking.

Perusing through the tunnels, Odette couldn't help but get lost in her own thoughts. She had discovered quite a bit in the past few days, but there was still so much information she needed to uncover if she was going to help the cause. And certainly, she wanted to more than anything, especially with the idea of her promotion looming overhead. She flinched at the thought. Was she really ready for such a thing? Was she strong enough, clever enough, inspiring enough? She wasn't so sure.

In the middle of her thoughts she found herself not paying attention to her steps, and bumped into a tiny yellowblood. Immediately she apologized, kneeling down to the his height. "I'm so sorry," She uttered, "I wasn't looking. You're not hurt, are you?". Something about the yellowblood felt familiar, but Odette couldn't put her finger on it. She was certain she'd think of it soon enough.

Stryke had briefly wandered away from the safety of the teen tealblood as he was poking around this particular section of the tunnel.

He'd been about to turn around to go back to her, when he felt something crash into him. The tiny kids eyes snapped open wide, and while the scream wasn't as nearly boisterous as it could have been, the sudden contact and force of it had sent his pump biscuit into over drive, slamming like a caged beast as he toppled over onto the tunnel floor. Landing on his a** glaring at the source of the disturbance. "AHH! what the ********> he hissed, panicking he'd found some sort of weird creature..or aggressive troll. Luckily, his candle hadn't gone out. Stryke lifted it up to illuminate the figure belonging to voice crouched down at his level that had asked him if he was okay.

His angry furrowed brows and narrowed eyes relaxed some however. It was the young woman whom had been holding Vremea's hand. "jez..you scared the s**t out of me..." he muttered softly, huffing at her.

Clearing his throat, and a gentle dismissal wave of his hand to his lusus who'd gotten agitated at his sudden screaming Stryke offered the friendly female a small, albeit pensive smile. "yesss. i'm alright thank you..are you?" he asked quickly in response, scooting back just a tad so they weren't so close, embarrassed he'd been scared out of his wits so easily.

"Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to scare you," Odette said, taken aback by the yellowblood's outburst. "Say," she said, looking closer at the boy, "I saw you at the meeting! You were that little one that hugged Vremea!" She smiled widely at the boy. He was charming and adorable, despite his slight vulgarity. She brought a hand to her chest in an introductory fashion, like she would if she were to bow. "I'm her moirail, Odette," She explained, hoping the information might soothe the boy's nerves.

Milieu nodded to Stryke and walked along the dank cavern, her nose wrinkling in distress. Ugh, well it was .... It was cave and tunnely, all right. There didn't seem to be much in the way of things to look at, though. Milieu moved to a pile of boxes and shuffled through them, finding a clue she wanted to show the other. When the teal looked up her friend and partner was... Gone.

Worried, Milieu moved forward, trying to calm her quickly pumping biscuit. Oh no... Oh no... Then when Stryke scream. Running now, Milieu was terrified of what could have happened. Certainly, he was with his lusus, but she shouldn't have been so negligent!

She saw him and stumbled to a halt, looking mortified. It wasn't just Stryke. Odette. There was no way to escape the inevitable now... She approached the group slowly and silently, her body language reading nothing but tension. They don't need me, she reminded herself, I'm just a burden... They don't need me. And yet a little bit of the teal troll hoped that they did need her, and would quash her fears.

Stryke visibly relaxed as Odette remained calm, and listened to her apology as he looked apologetic himself for the outburst as he inclined his head to her respectfully. "ah! i recognize you form the meeting room yes! i saw you two holding hands. so your moirails?" Whatever reservations he'd held about the girl passed away just as quickly as they'd arisen. "i'm glad she has some one who cares for her so." he murmured softly.

"i'm stryke nvrmor..it's nice to meet you ma'm, i'm not sure if i recall what your name was?" he added politely, even smiling a tad.

He noticed Miliue approaching, looking up to her as he looked extraordinarily embarrassed, his cheeks tinged his yellowblood color, glad for the dim lightning. "sorry...i didn't mean to ssscream or scare you mili. nor get separated form you, thanks for finding me anyway. i just..didn't expect to run into anyone." he rubbed at the back of his neck. He didn't know about why she'd been upset earlier, only that his friend was upset. The fact that these female trolls were the source was unknown to him. He was pleasantly oblivious for once.

SkinkDad looked between the lot of those gathered, huffing at the gathered group of trolls as he sat down beside his ward watching them suspiciously. The medium size lizard made no effort to move however, as the tension had all but evaporated as far as he was concerned.
