Questionable Tactician

So, I got talked into siging up to this website called Goodreads. On it you list all of what you've read, are reading, and want to read, then rate how you liked it. Afterwards the site recommends other books and authors.

While it was interesting to see all of what I've read compiled into one massive list (it was quite impressive if I do say so myself wink ) I find the site to be like Netflix just without the ability to rent the books.

Anyone else tried this site?

I found out about it at least a couple years ago. It was fun initially... but I got bored of it fast. I already have a rather large to-read list, I don't need more on it... Interestingly, though, a lot of the books that popped up on my recommendations list were ones that I already had in mind to read at some point. But yeah. It was too much effort to put in all the books I've read and rate them and everything. I can't even remember the last time I went on it, to be honest.

It'd be way better if it was like Netflix.

I found the site kept recommending things I would never read. Like, it recommended everything under the category of "Guide to Tolkein's Works" ever written, because everyone who reads Lord of the Rings is obsessive to the point of learning to speak elvish.

Also, it seems to really, really want me to start reading word porn (aka romance) stare

Yeah, it'd be way better if it were like Netflix. I'd be down to be able to rent the books it recommends.

Some recommendations are also very interesting. XD I don't remember any too left-field ones, but then it was a year or two ago, so I don't really remember much about the recommendations very clearly. Not exactly something important. XD

I use the site pretty often, mostly to keep track of books that I'm reading. I do like the Netflix idea though, would make finding some of these books a lot easier.

The recommendations do get pretty nonsensical at times, but I ignore them. It's pretty rare when I see a book they recommend that actually does catch my interest. Another thing I think they should work on is the community part of it. Feels a little too dull for me.

I've never even looked at the community part of it. That's what I use Gaia for wink

I found out that if you have an unpublished book in your to-read list, Goodreads will email when the publishing date is close. Which is about the only useful feature on that website.

Sounds nice if you have tastes that stay pretty constant.
But for people like me who will be all over the board or are picky it's hard to get good recommendations. Kindle hasn't given me one for a whole 3 weeks now. Seems that I read everything that I can stand.

I actually use it a lot. I find it helpful when I'm looking for something to read. Although I don't like when it recommends books to me. I find that I don't want to read any of them. I especially like when it keeps me updated on books that haven't been published yet. I also like being able to talk to my favorite authors.

I just recently started using it. Though, that was a few months ago, and I haven't been on it since. I have no idea if it is actually worth it to continue using goodreads

I use it all the time! I love it! It is only useful though if you want to track what you read, want to be involved in book groups, and get to know some Authors that use the site. Sometimes the Authors have promotions or giveaways on there.

There is a site for books like Netflex. I have not used it, but see it advertised a lot on Facebook.
