Alcmene had been having a fairly quiet, peaceful night despite the concerns that had been brought to her a couple nights before. She was expecting trouble, so she wasn't terribly surprised when Baba'nyota came to her with one of the Ilanga lions to talk. Fafnir was off keeping busy elsewhere and since this was so important she had sent Kivuli off to find his uncle, but she knew better than to send Baba'nyota away while there was a potentially dangerous lion before her. Still, he was off to the side and not taking part in the conversation.

"Kobe'gumu, you are the king of the Ilanga'izwe and you've been lurking around our borders these past few days," she said, almost a question but mostly a statement. She had his name and status from Baba'nyota, they were past introductions already. Names did not concern her so much as the reason he was here. He had no escorts with him, it was a daring move to just walk in and not even try to conceal your identity.

"Why have you come here?"

Kobe'gumu sat before the queen. In spite of everything, he could not help but be in awe of her beauty. The Mwezi'Johari had truly prospered since the war. His eyes welled with sadness to remember all the blood shed in vain. Now the red river that flowed from his paws led them to this moment under grim circumstances, when a fallen king would beg for the mercy of an angelic queen, the decedent of his former enemy.

"Reconciliation," he replied with a heavy heart. "Ever since the war I've wandered the rogue lands with the remnants of my pride, all of us struggling to survive. Now only four of us remain, one of them pregnant. I led them here with the hope that we would be allowed to join your pride for the safety of the mother's unborn cubs."

He was very clear, concise and to the point. He knew what he was doing, Alcmene could tell that much about him. But he was a king, and whether or not he had made some bad decisions and lost much of his pride.. surely he would have been practiced at this kind of interaction at some point. She didn't respond immediately, considering what he said. One of his companions was pregnant and they needed a safe place.. reasonable, if there really was a pregnant lioness and if they weren't former enemies.

"Why would you choose to come here searching for safety?" she asked, "I was born after the war but I know the stories, and though we also lost many there are still many lions here who were there, who remember. Surely you haven't forgotten."

They had started it, so the stories had told her, perhaps they could be more forgiving.. except that they had lost the battle. The Mwezi'Johari had killed many of them, though they also had been killed. It was an unusual situation.

"I could never forget," Kobe replied, shaking his head. Though he wouldn't bring up his personal problems at a time like this, the war would not leave him alone. It haunted his dreams. By now he accepted that he could never escape his past. But he could change his future.

"The truth is, I choose Mwezi'Johari because of that terrible war. Those who came with me were too young to fight in the war and our numbers are too small to pose any threat. I know now that violence was the wrong answer. That is why I came here, to make amends, if I can, and to start over." He held back a sigh. "Maybe that is selfish of me... but I know they will be safe here too, if you allow us to stay. Of course, if you would do that, I will step down as their king."

She considered his words carefully and did her best to read his expression. He seemed genuine, but she could maintain a sincere appearance and tone when necessary, it was part of ruling effectively. She had insecurities nobody needed to notice so she hid them. She had no experience with this pride and this king, her grandfather- and perhaps even her father- might be best suited to determine his sincerity without all the facts.

"Have you been informed of the accusations against you?" she asked, glancing to where Nyota stood nearby and back again to Kobe, "Some of our members were ambushed on a hunting trip, two of them died and the survivor has informed us that your group was involved."

Kobe narrowed his eyes. He only had a little time to consider what he knew, but it was enough to come to a conclusion. He honestly hated to think about what happened. There was too much damn suffering in the world. "Yes, Kivuli told me. All I can say for certain is that it couldn't have been any of the lions from the group that came with me. None of them have a motive. Even if they had, none of them showed any signs of being in a fight.

"However, we are not all that is left of my pride. There was another group that split off from us before we started on our way. There were some... bitter lions in that group. I let them go because I didn't want to force them to join a pride they hated. It's possible they could be behind this. If that's the case, I'll do everything I can to help bring them to justice." Even if that meant dragging them to their deaths. If he was right, and he dearly hoped that he was wrong, then those former-Ilanga deserved the highest punishment for spitting their freedom back in the face of the King who granted it.

Alcmene stayed silent for a moment after he suggested an alternative, it was possible if these were genuinely peaceable Ilanga lions but it was this specific group the lioness had accused. Assuming Dusana was correct, how dangerous might it be to reject them? There were only a pawful of them, though, and they were on pride lands.. so on the large scale it would be worse for them to try something.

"What reason do I have for taking the chance that you're telling the truth now?" she asked, "You've been in my position, you understand the risks of letting strangers into your pride but all of you were once enemies, even if you claim to hold no grudges now."

Kobe shifted his paws and let out a quiet sigh. After taking a moment to collect his thoughts, he answered her: "We stand no chance against you. But I understand your concern. Until we get to the bottom of this, I can't ask you to shelter my group."

Besides, it was too risky to stay here until these accusations were cleared. If word got out the pride might decide to take matters into their own paws. Even staying near the boarder could be dangerous. He continued, "Perhaps I should go back and speak with them. One of them might have overheard something before our pride split up. I know what you're going through and I want to do everything I can to resolve this issue as soon as possible. I don't want to cause another unnecessary conflict."

He hoped his willingness to cooperate would convince her.

She considered his suggestion, weighing the benefits of letting him look into it and the costs of offering them some privacy to discuss matters. The accusation was not taken lightly, though, and it seemed unfair to give them the opportunity to get away.

"If your request to join is sincere, I suggest you bring your group here to speak for themselves," she said finally, "If you are innocent, you will be safe but you'll have to forgive us any precautions."

She could fetch Fafnir and have him weigh in on this situation, and they would certainly have whatever guards could be spared to make sure they were not outnumbered and the strangers did not wander through unwatched. It was not an accusation that would be easy to prove, they would have to trust their ability to detect a lie.

"Your presence on the borders has created enough paranoia, we can settle this tonight."

His pride would not be happy about this. Of course, they couldn't have been expecting a warm welcome. He would have to break the situation to them gently. Once they understood he felt confident they would all comply. "That seems fair," he agreed.
