"Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear..."

Forgotten Feathers was surely lost. This was really not an unusual circumstance however when she had tried calling for Night Heron he did not show up to take her home. Did that mean there was another bird that was around to save her? That was their deal, after all.

She was trying to walk, but every step was a wobble. Her little grey hooves would press into the marshy surroundings, not firm enough to hold her body straight. She walked like a cat without a tail, or perhaps like a bird trying to fly with one wing was a more appropriate simile. She let out a loud sigh. She did not recognize any of these trees at all! She never should have followed that mongoose along the tree lines, and then hop with the foxbun in the same direction.

As she was considering possible better choices she tripped over a rock and fell fast and hard into the ground. She had forgotten to watch her step.

"Oh dear--" She said as she looked up and then begun to look around, a surprised look coming over her face. There were... feathers... everywhere. She must have fallen into heaven! And that's when she made a noise that could only be described as a squeal.

User ImageSwan is jerked awake by the sound, and the ephemeral shape next to him (his swan form sleeps with its head tucked beneath its wing, just as he does) follows suit. Late afternoon nap disrupted, Swan ruffles his feathers and tries not to seem too irritated; smooths a rumpled bit of fur on his shoulder and shakes out his cascading beard before rising from his spot on the mangrove roots and descending gracefully into the water, ripples tossing the feathers gently to and fro. The ghostly swan follows after as he wends his way through the tree roots towards the sound, still slightly groggy, and calls out: "Do I have a visitor?"

Forgotten Feathers lowered her head at the sound of the approaching creature, at first eyes staring at the feathers all around before she closed them tight while her body began sinking a little into the mud below her. She shook her head slowly in a nodding manner.

"I-I-I'm sorry!" She cried out, "I didn't mean to barge in and disturb you!"

Her eyes still shut she began to ramble on about how she got lost, and how her legs could barely even hold her up right. For how goodness sake she couldn't even walk straight. The ground always seemed so foreign to her, after all. It took her a minute to stop, by which time Swan would have been much closer to her as she slowly pushed her body up, wobbling slightly to each side. She opened her eyes again, she figured it would be best this way. If she didn't she'd probably just trip over a root and fall again!

It was probably impolite to not greet the person she disturbed. and slowly she lifted her head. "I'm really--" she started just as she caught sight of Swan, his wings, his feathers. It was probably even more impolite to stare, but that's what she was doing. Jaw dropped, staring.

Swan has the good grace to keep his preening inward. Instead, he reaches down to pluck one of the drifting feathers from the water, extending his head to tuck it neatly behind the doe's ear, as though it were hers, a thing she'd lost, that he was merely returning to its proper place. Incorrigible flirt!

"No need to apologize," he soothes. "You didn't injure yourself, did you?"

The doe was speechless for a good while after the mysterious kimeti in front of her had placed a feather behind her ear, her face perpetually frozen with a look of bliss. She was still staring, but more in an admiring sense than the shock of it, the desire of it. It saddened her a bit, but then she felt the feather behind her ear tickle.

A feather~~ A feather~~ on her!

"I-I'm..." she said, as she slowly moved each leg in repetition to make sure it was okay, almost falling again in the process, "I do... do not seem to be..." Looking at him as she said that she found herself blushing for two reasons.

"Excellent," is Swan's brisk answer, and he scoops up another feather to join the first. Much better. Much more pleasing. He steps back to admire the sprig of white on white, and then half-turns towards his little grotto-esque hideaway. "Were you looking for me especially, or do I have the pleasure of a serendipitous visitor?" And then, a bit more modestly, perhaps: "I am Swan, by the way, if the latter." The invitation hangs mutely for her own name, and the shadowy bird swimming at his ankles echoes his movements gracefully, but somewhat eerily, the dappled light passing right through its shape and onto the undisturbed water beneath it.

The doe, if she could, would have turned as red as a beet. For the first time since she remembered waking up from her sac, she didn't feel lonely. She had two feathers on her head and a pair of wings right in front of her eyes. It's as if she had found her way somewhere she was always meant to be.

With a small studder she answered the kimeti.

"I... I got lost, but maybe I'm right where I was supposed to be. I am pleased to meet you, Swan. It is very suiting." She said, "I was once compared to one, but it's not so much suiting to myself..."

She watched him, and then as if she was hit over the head with a falling fruit from above she said, "I... I am Forgotten Feathers!"

Swan's eyebrows creep up his solemn forehead. "Forgotten Feathers! Perhaps one day you can tell me about your naming dream... I am glad, if my feathers--" and he gestured with his nose at her new acquisitions "--were somehow a comfort, in light of that name."

Thinking about her dream was really rather sad, but perhaps she'd tell this swan one day.

The doe nodded her head, gently, making sure the feathers were happy on her head. She love them so. They'd surely be her favourite thing ever.

"They are! Thank you!" she said excitedly. "They're not the wings I seek, but they are the feathers of my soul, so to say!"

Both taken aback and charmed by the err--eccentric behaviour of the stranger, Swan finds himself grinning, and quickly smooths the expression into a more dignified smile. "What wings do you seek, then?" he asks politely, apparently determined to treat her with the respect he'd give any other visitor.

The doe made a circling movement around and around. It appeared as if she was chasing her tail, but she was trying to look at the markings on her back, the wings that had withdrawn into her coat. "I..." she begun, "These," she said, her head tilting to her side as she finally stopped spinning. "They are shy, and have withdrawn to be just markings on my coat." She said this with a smile, her eyes glistening at her new found friendly stranger.

"But they are beautiful there on your fur," the stag gravely observes, "and much more practical, you see, than these." To demonstrate, he stretches his own wings wide, magnificent--and cumbersome, brushing up against the encircling roots and the feathers falling into instant disarray as they push against the bark. "Yours are always neat, always tidy. And much lighter. Wings are heavier things than you'd think."

Truth told, Swan is becoming a bit wistful as he recounts this, and it is obvious. His own wings had once been much like the doe's. Then the dreams had come, and the great change, and he'd woken up, first ecstatic, then a bit miffed at this so-called blessing. Perhaps--the thought had occurred more than once--they were a gentle reminder from the Motherfather that beauty is not always a virtue.

Forgotten Feathers was flattered. She found herself stepped closer to the stag, trying not to topple over with her careless and wobbling steps. Her points, may be true, but she still felt incomplete, she still felt like she was missing something. A weight that would keep her balanced.

"You are complete." She said, admiring his wings more. She would glance back at the markings on her fur. "My completion is an illusion." It was like there was a IOU on her back. So sorry we took your wings, here, have this placeholder. "What if I were to lose my fur?"

"Then they would be in your skin. And underneath it," he answers, with total certainty in his voice. No condescending soothing tones here, only matter-of-factness. "Just because they're shy doesn't mean they're not there. Just staying close to you. Mine don't stay close at all--they wander." He sidles up alongside the doe, rib to rib, and stretches one wing over her back, extending it as far as possible, so that it might--from some angles, perhaps even from the doe's own point of view--look as though it belongs to her, rather than to him; as though he had just for a tiny moment lent her his feathers. "They have this awful habit of abandoning me, only to come back later and ask for forgiveness. You'll never have to worry about yours running away and showing back up at inopportune times. Always close."

Forgotten Feathers was thinking about where her wings fit under her skin, being shy and hiding the world. Perhaps them being inside and not out was the cause of her imbalance. She was about to speak when Swan moved right up against her and then squeaked when from the corner of her eye she thought she seen wings sprout from her back. She was at a loss for words for a moment and soon found herself murmuring, "Why would they abandon such a wonderful bird like yourself?"
