Believe it or not, it was a kid's series in Japan... despite all the gore and violence.

The series is set after the world was ruined by nuclear war in 199X (i.e. the exact year is not given). It stars a man named Kenshiro, who is the successor to Hokuto Shinken ("Divine Fist of the North Star"), a martial art that kills people by applying force to pressure points usually resulting in horrible deaths.
After the war, the Earth was plunged into an age of terror where the strong reigned supreme, and Kenshiro, while searching for his girlfriend Yuria, encounters and executes the strong bad guys along his way. He has no mercy for those who treat the weak without mercy.
People in the US and Canda can buy Fist of the North Star here: ^-^ http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/AWXG=WiWCM8=Yl8mZU/browse/item/83088/4/0/0 The movie

That was one of the first anime's I ever saw after my kids were born. I was completely blown away...until I saw Vampire Hunter D...pant, pant, pant, oooowwwOOOOHHHHHH! heart I was head over heals in love with a cartoon dude and willing to "dabble in watercolors!" Oh well. But I remember the violence in Fist of the Northstar and the way that one guy (my favorite character in the movie) used his hands to cut that baddie into meat chunks. I wouldn't let my kids see it. Does anyone remember Galaxy Express 999? That was my very first anime.
