Lumos had been enjoying his day. He arose earlier in the morning than usual, determined to explore the lands as far as he could. His journey to discover his own path in life had taken him far from his family and it would take him further still. For the past few hours, he wandered aimlessly. Not caring which way he went so long as he didn't make circles. He quite liked days such as this. Nice, bright, sun shiny day with a gentle breeze wafting across his fur to cool him off. Yes, this was the life. Soon he would stop in search of a meal and something to drink. There were plenty of opportunities to do that around here it seemed.
Lifting his nose to the air, the young fox drew in a deep breath. A thousand scents filled his nostrils, each one tickling a different portion of his brain. But the one which caught his attention the most was that of water. An ocean, by the smell of it, lay somewhere close by to his left. Lumos would file that information away for later. Best to press on for now, though. He had only gone a few yards when an intriguing situation occurred. A quick staccato of barking, two in total, echoed among the trees. It was a strange bark. One that Lumos couldn't quite place. Yet it was certainly a bark. Ears perked forward curiously, the fox stood still for a moment, waiting to see if it would happen again. A moment of silence passed with no more barking to be heard.
Lumos was the inquisitive sort, however, and couldn't let the incident pass. He let out two quick barks of his own. Head cocked slightly to one side in hopes of pinpointing the location of the noise should a return call be sounded.

There it is again! The barking that had drawn Lumos' attention sounded from his left, in the direction of the ocean. Curiosity peaked, he started towards the ocean and the barking. To make a new friend would be wonderful! He had left most of his friends and family behind when he decided to set out on his journey. If another fox were around, then he might be able to learn of the area, or perhaps even learn a few things about living out in the world. Whatever the case, Lumos found himself quickening his pace to see whom had called out.
Winding his way through trees and bushes, the fox finally emerged onto a sandy beach. Waves lapped up from the ocean in a calming, rhythmic pattern. Lumos took a moment to take in the scenery, his dark eyes absorbing the wonderful sight. As his eyes skimmed about, he took notice of a black shape hunkered down on the sand further away. It didn't look anything like a fox. Surely that is not the one who barked at me? He thought with furrow brow. Maybe if... Lumos released a softer bark to see what the other would do. If it barked back, then he knew he had found the individual. If it didn't, then he would have to keep searching. But something in him felt that the odd creature would indeed be returning his call.
