Some people like the extra X's on each side as decoration, sometimes if the name of choice without X's is already taken.

Hell, no. This is just be me being extreme biased, but Xx*xX usernames seem unoriginal. You know because it's already taken. Zylem X has a cool ring to it; keep it! 3nodding

I'm a video games person, but basically most of the time double X's usually was refered to a pro status or for a clan/squad/team to my understanding. Why I really don't know, they just do that.

In an old game I use to play you couldn't find a leaderboard list without seeing something like that, an example would be my squad. My squad on this game use to be xXSTRANDEDXx. We're not elite pros, but you get the point. That's what it resembles to me.
