Cassie's head tilted as she watched him turn. "Complicated?" Was it? It seemed so odd to her that there was anyone out there that didn't like the water, but she supposed it wasn't impossible. She tended to surround herself with beach bums, so how likely would it have been? A little narrow minded on her part, now that he thought about it.

With a soft hum the girl got to her feet, walking through the shallows until she was standing behind him. Pausing only as he commented on the other volleyball player as they trotted back to join the game. "I'm sure they'll be fine." It wasn't a formal game, so it wasn't as if they couldn't continue one short, or find another player.

"I've got some towels," she offered helpfully, her hand coming up to rest lightly on his back. Pale skin contrasting with his natural bronze. "Grab your hoodie, we can go dry off." Cassie always had towels with her when she was going anywhere near the beach. Usually multiple ones, just in case.

She was curious about his tone, the see of his shoulders, and just what it was that was causing it, but it seemed a fairly personal question. She wasn't exactly known for her tact, but this seemed a sore subject, and he was interesting enough that she really didn't want to chase him off picking at him.

He turned back toward her, surprised when the young woman decided to leave her fellow volleyball players in favor of helping him dry off. The slight pressure of her hand on his back was comforting, but it suddenly made him wonder if he was acting like a child with the fuss he made over getting wet. It would be rude now to reject her kindness after she had forsaken her teammates and game for him.

With a weary smile at her suggestion regarding his hoodie, he nodded in acknowledgment and went to go fetch it. It was still too cold to him to move too quickly, but he walked over as fast as he dared and picked it up, shaking it free of excess sand. Since it had gotten soaked, a great many grains still stuck to the damp cloth, but he figured when it dried, he could dust it off properly. Carrying it in one hand, he went back to the girl.

"Hey...I don't think I got your name," the teen commented, realizing they hadn't introduced themselves in all the excitement that had happened. "I'm Kit."

Surprise was met with a brightening of Cassie's usual, friendly smile. A little reassuring, a little wicked. She waited for him to grab his hoodie, thought about suggesting his give it a dip in the water to clear the sand off, but thought better of it. It'd dry, the sand would fall off on it's own. It seemed more important to get away from the water, rather than suggesting he go back into it, even if only for a moment.

When he returned to her she started leading him back up the beach towards where they had started from. "Oh, I guess not." It seemed like they should have exchange names at some point in all that excitement, but nope. "I'm Cassiopeia, or just Cassie for short. I know it's a mouthful." Walking sideways, she offered him her hand in proper greeting. "It's nice to meet you." And she was happy to say so sincerely, despite the whole not liking water thing.

She supposed, if he proved interesting enough, it was a forgivable sin.

As the passed the volleyball game, back in action now, Cassie offered the players a wave, then bent mid step to loop her arm around a bag, slinging it up on her shoulder. There were towels inside, as well as a few other odds and ends that were important for a long day in the sun. She grabbed the towel on the top and offered it over to him.

"Cassiopeia. Pretty name," he remarked, his smile gradually returning to normal as the sun began to warm him. "Pleasure's all mine." Kit took her hand firmly and shook it.

When they went by the volleyball players still playing, he raised his hand in a mild greeting while Cassie grabbed her belongings. That reminded him; he needed to get his sketchbook.

"Thanks," he said, gratefully accepting the towel as it was offered to him. "I'll be right back. Gotta pick up something else I left behind." He walked quickly over to where he'd kept his paper pad and pencil in the sand, retrieving them with dry hands before returning to Cassie.

"Oops. That must've been when I got hit by that ball," he murmured with a soft chuckle, seeing the the thick line he'd accidentally drawn through his most recent sketch. Kit quickly flipped his pencil to erase it, draping the towel over his shoulders like a cloak to free his hands while he did so.

"Pretty," she agreed, chuckling faintly. "But a mouthful." Which was why she usually just went by Cassie, it was so much easier.

She waited as he retrieved his sketchbook and pencil, wincing once again as she noticed the long, dark line that was etched across the page from having the volleyball nail him in his face. "How's your face, by the way?" He wasn't bleeding, but other than that she couldn't exactly tell if any damage had been done, even if minor.

While he erased she'd give the picture itself a better look, curious as to what he'd been doodling. "Wow, you're really good." Volleyball educed error excluded. Obviously that wasn't meant to be a part of the picture, and she hoped it'd erase cleanly. She'd hate to see the picture ruined by the accident.

"Fair enough," he agreed with a grin. "Nicknames are more fun, anyway."

"My face?" Kit asked, caught off-guard by the question. "I dunno. I think it's pretty attractive, don't you?" he teased. "Heheh...but no, really, I'm fine. High pain tolerance."

Noticing Cassie's curiosity regarding his picture, he leaned to the side to give her a better view. The particular sketch he'd been working on had been of a family creating a sand castle together with the ocean as their backdrop.

"Thanks," he said, scratching the back of his neck, "but it's not all that great. I just draw what I see. It's like taking a picture; just copying down something in front of me on paper. No imagination or creativity involved." He shrugged and flipped the page over to the previous sketch. This one was of the volleyball game being played. Cassie happened to be front and center, stylish swim suit and all.

"Still, helps to pass the time. And notice little things that help me appreciate them more." He ripped out the page and handed it to the young woman. "For you, if you want it."

"That's true," she agreed easily, laughing before turning a thoughtful look up to him as they walked. "Is your name short for anything?" If it was, she couldn't think of what it might be otherwise.

She gave a soft sort at his modesty, bumping her elbow into his side before returning bright eyes back down to the picture. Then the next, as he flipped the page to the previous one, and she came face to face with herself. "Oh wow." Whatever she'd meant to say, some teasing barb at being too humble, was lost as she took the page handed to her.

It was her, with the rest of the folks she'd been playing with, though they hadn't been captured in quite as much detail. He'd gotten her hair, the sweep of her shoulders, even the chevron pattern of her bathing suit. It was good. It was also very flattering, and she felt a bit of heat rising up to her cheeks as she looked down at it. "Are you sure, I mean. It looks like you put a lot of work into this." She'd take it, of course--how often did you have cute boys drawing pictures of you--but she felt a little guilty about it.

Cassie was going to run into something if she just kept staring, though. Glancing up, she realized they'd made it to the parking lot, then gave a thoughtful hum. "You don't have to rush off, do you? We could..." Peering around them, she eyed the boardwalk. "Take a walk, or something." Or something.

If he'd suggested heading back to his car, she wouldn't have been opposed.

"Kitty-Cat. 'Cause I'm so adorable," Kit answered with a wink.

"Ow," he chuckled when she elbowed him, though it didn't particularly hurt. He laughed louder when she seemed to admire his drawing of her. "What, didn't know you looked that good in action? I guess I'd admire myself too if I could play like that."

At her question about him being sure, he nodded with a smile. "It's the least I can do after you offered to help me towel off. Not to mention you were the main muse for this one, so it's only fair." Kit's smile broadened into another sly grin. "But I might need to sketch another of you to replace it before you change out of that suit if you'll allow me."

He spread his arms wide. "Do I look like I have anywhere to be? You're the one who ditched your game for me. I'm in your debt." Having followed her gaze to the boardwalk, he nodded toward it. "You want to take a walk, we'll take a walk. Name it; your wish is my command."

Cassie snorted, smile turning incredulous as she gave a minute shake of her head. "Uh huh." Not shortened, then. Or he just didn't want to tell her. that was alright, she'd call him whatever he wanted to be called.

"And it's not that," she stated, in regards to the picture. "I just haven't met anyone that could draw that well before. It's pretty badass." she could surf, and she was pretty damn good at volleyball, but those weren't exactly trade skills that she could use outside of those specific activities. Kit's drawing skills seemed more impressive by comparison, though she wasn't sure why.

Taking great care not to wrinkle it, Cas tucked the picture safely away in her bag. she'd have to remember to take it out straight away when she got home, or the poor thing would get ruined. She was notoriously rough on her things. Hazard of a rebellious, less than legal lifestyle. She had to look up, though, in the middle of trying to slide the paper up along the side to keep it from getting wet or bent, to flash him a smug little smirk. "Sure, I can model some more." Dark brows arched. "Since you asked so nicely."

The smirk took on a decidedly mischievous curl at her wish being his command, and she hooked her arm around his, leaning in close to his side. "You'll turn a girl's head with talk like that." Maybe they disappear for bit below the boardwalk. There were a good many walkways and nice, private little corners down there.

"Hehehe...not buying it, huh?" he chuckled, amused at her reaction to his silly explanation. "Alright, I'll admit 'Kit' wasn't the name I was born with. But the story about why I changed it is long and boring and I don't want to weigh down this conversation with heavy, stupid background stuff, especially since we just met."

He waved a hand. "If you still remember and want to know why later, I'll tell you another time. But for now, I say we just enjoy the sea, the sand, the atmosphere, and the company." Beaming at her, Kit added, "I could be wrong, but I get the feeling you're like me in preferring to live in the moment rather than dwell on the past."

Sneering, he swatted Cassie playfully. "Stoooop, you're making me blush! And I appreciate the compliment, but like I said, I just draw what I see. You're the one who provided the subject matter and inspiration." Kit grinned. "About your agreeing to model, though, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not since I didn't directly ask. But if you mean it and you really would, I'd be grateful."

Warmed by her new proximity and the feel of her arm looping with his, the young man unconsciously leaned in closer just as he noticed her doing the same. "Heh...wasn't my intention, but I'm not complaining."
