๑๑๑๑ ENTER FROM VILLAGE GATES

Turning off the pre-made paths in the residential area, Luo began to navigate a small thicket of bamboo that they kept within the village albeit at the council's request. Where most people lived right off the beaten paths created for everyone, Luo lived a few hundred yards out from everyone quite surrounded by the bamboo save for the space he cleared himself to build his bamboo home. Unlike most of the bamboo houses built, Luo had his raised on bamboo stilts three feet off the ground. Not only this, but the house was twice the size of the normal hut, however instead of building up the man built out. In design it seemed to have taken quite a bit of time, it certainly wasn't by any means a normal hut, however Luo had invested quite a lot of time over the past year working on it alone, sleeping in his original tent or even his council office until it was complete.

Around the rectangular home was a small traditional Japanese-style wrap around porch, lined with tatami mats that stretched out three feet. As for getting up to the only door however, Luo had built a simple bamboo ladder for the task; not everything about the home was grandiose. Walking up the ladder, Luo turned the simple latch on the bamboo door and opened it, turning on a small gas lamp he kept on a desk placed on the inside adjacent wall. Walking around the room, he turned on three more such lamps, revealing his living area in its entirety. On the right side of the room were simple rice paper doors blocking from view what could only be assumed as Luo's sleeping area. Taking up one complete half of the home, one would only have to guess that Luo had most of his important items through those doors.

In the very center of the living area however was a pit with a large kettle hanging over it, no doubt the pit had a fire that was created from under the home. Around it was four seating pillows, one of which clearly more worn than the rest. The man didn't have many visitors, something he didn't mind at all. In the far corner was a long desk spanning the room with kitchen supplies and a window behind it which was shut. On the right side of the room was a large bookcase which while not completely filled, held quite a bit of material to read. Most of the tomes however were transcribed by Luo himself into leather-bound journals, the young man not willing to risk losing the original copies he had back at home.

Other than a map spanning what was left of the wall with the rice paper door, and a small chest under the bamboo table with kitchenware, the living space was pretty empty. As large as the place was, it was clear that Luo was a man of simplicity albeit as far as possessions were concerned. His home on the outside however, didn't quite mimic that.

Making his way to the small chest under the table, he popped the metal latch on it, rifling through for a second before pulling something out and closing the chest once more. Standing up and turning around he walked up to Athran and held his hand out, producing meat wrapped and tied in bamboo sinew. "That should be enough for the both of you for the next three days. Unless you have any questions for me however, I suggest you get home to your mother before it gets late. My classes start late morning and I'd hate for you to get a late start."

"You can always choose your actions...

Following Luo through a thicket of bamboo, Athran couldn't help but wonder why they had moved off the beaten path. But after a short time of walking, he saw their goal. Sequestered within the thicket was, at least from Athran's perspective, a luxurious bamboo home, raised off the ground slightly by bamboo stilts. Following Luo into the house, Athran was both impressed by the elegance of the interior and surprised by how spartan the room seemed, with virtually no furniture aside from a few necessities. While to many the home was probably not as impressive as you might expect of a council-member, to Athran it might as well have been a palace.

Scanning the walls, Athran found himself drawn to a large map stretched across one of the wall, walking towards it to study the land. He had never seen such a large and detailed map. It outlined not only the nation where the Village was hidden, but the surrounding nations as well, along with their most important cities. As he studied the map, he heard Luo speaking to him and turned around to see that Luo was holding a large bamboo wrapped package. Taking the meat from Luo, Athran bowed formally and said,
"Thank you, Sensei, I won't be late."

With that, Athran left the house and began making his way back to his own small hut, clutching Luo's precious gift tightly. This day had certainly not gone the way he had expected, but in the end he was sure it was for the better. Arriving in front of his house after several minutes of walking, Athran walked inside to see his mother stirring the contents of their stew pot. Smiling, Athran held the package over his head and said,
"I have a treat for us mother, something to add to tonight's meal.

...what you can't choose are the consequences."

(kind of a lame post, but I'm short on time, looking forward to the next lesson though!)

Shikaku spun around at Timmy's question, walking backwards a few paces before looking towards the sky and frowning. The sun was well beyond the tree line, and it was quickly getting dark. Not only that, but tomorrow was one of Luo's classes, and being late was not Shikaku's idea of a good plan. "Probably just going to boil it." the boy answered with a grimace. Rabbit wasn't his favorite meat at the best of times, but boiled it was generally tough and almost flavorless. "It's too late to start anything more complex, but we can reuse whatever is left tomorrow for something better." he said with a shrug and a sigh. He really couldn't wait until he'd figured out a safe way to take down a deer or one of the other larger animals in the forest, and preserve the meat. Neither he nor Timmy wanted to spend their hard earned coin on meat in the village market, but he also wasn't ready yet to try for the better game, so they were stuck with whatever fell into his snares for the time being.

A few moments later, as the reached the residential district and Shikaku started to increase his pace a bit, wanting to get dinner done so he could sleep, and maybe try meditation again as well, Timmy spoke again, mentioning something Shikaku had nearly forgotten about, making him pause mentally for a few seconds. Turning around again, he frowned thoughtfully. "Hard to say... We did hide them pretty well, but they probably got pretty loud when they got hungry, and the patrols change frequently, so someone probably found them." he snickered a moment as another thought occurred to him. "They were pretty close to being right under the guardhouse after all. Imagine the scare if they heard them through the grates?" Shikaku grinned at his brother, then turned again as they reached home, running inside to find his cooking supplies.

Shikaku yawned, sitting down atop his bedroll on the bottom floor of their "Tower". Always the cautious one, he'd chosen to have his "Room" against the outer wall of the monstrosity, no windows, and walls completely segregating it from the rest of the space. He'd even attempted to engineer a breakaway wall that he could roll through to escape his room in an emergency before Timmy had stopped him, claiming the tripwire and bamboo spike trap on the door was probably enough. He was doubtful of that, but conceded, for now.

Speaking of Timmy, the other boy had retired to his room after their dinner, which had thankfully not been spoiled from being in the sun all day. Shikaku wasn't sure what he was doing up there, but assumed he was either planning his raid on the storehouse, or tinkering with something he didn't want to know about. That had to be the one thing Timmy hadn't complained about here. Unlike back in the city, nobody here even tried to stop Timmy from experimenting with things. What was yet to be seen of course was how long that policy would last once he actually did some real damage that they couldn't talk their way out of...

Shuddering at the though of what could cause that, Shikaku shook his head to clear it of random thoughts, and crossed his legs as Luo had shown them earlier, closing his eyes and trying to control his breathing. He'd decided to try and achieve a meditative state again before bed. Both to assure him that it really wasn't a fluke that he'd pulled it off in the first place, and also to satisfy his own curiosity. He hadn't gotten a chance to talk to Luo, and he was almost certain it wasn't normal to be watched inside your own mind, and the eyes he'd seen were certainly not his own. Steeling himself, Shikaku focused entirely on his breathing, just as before, and slowly the world began to fade away.

๑๑๑๑ Sliding the door to his room open, Luo walked out of it dressed in proper attire for the first time in weeks. His hand loomed on the frame of the door, a pang of fatigue striking him as he realized he probably shouldn't have stood up so fast. Taking a moment to steady himself, the young councilman walked towards the door, opening it and closing the latch behind him, sitting on the tatami surrounding his home for a moment to put his boots on. Inhaling the fresh mountain air, Luo was glad to be up and about finally, at least relatively so. He was sure had his mother been around she'd force him to take a few more days off to rest. Luo however was anxious, and he felt he could put his classes off no longer without hindering the children's progress. Even if he wanted to take more days off, he was sure he more than likely couldn't even afford the luxury of doing so.

What the doctor Luo kept on retainer for two weeks told him, was that his illness was due to a bug bite he had on his neck. While the man was unable to accurately place what type of bug it was, Luo's symptoms were something he'd seen in the past. Apart from feeling weak as well as barely being able to eat, Luo had a fever that was according to the medical practitioner, dangerously high. It had been quite some time since Luo had ever felt that sick, and in fact he wasn't sure if he'd ever actually been that sick before. It was only after a lazy afternoon of rigorous training that Luo was even able to recognize being sick. The cold sweats coupled with wheezing after what he considered a jog forced his hand in seeing a doctor, and it didn't help that he'd collapsed on the way there.

What the bug was he supposed he'd never know, or at least it would be some time until he could find it again. However, Luo found it to be a bit disturbing that there was something of that nature within the brush of the area they'd chosen for their village. As much as people hunted, he found it surprising more people weren't sick often. Upon further thought however, Luo wondered if the bite was incurred while he was mapping the surrounding woods, or on one of his training trips away from the village. He did tend to stray far from the village and any of its inhabitants when doing either of those things, and he'd spent some time doing both activities within the week he fell ill. His only hope was that he didn't somehow bring the bug or any mates back with him.

Standing up slower than the last time, Luo stepped down the ladder and began his way towards the academy. Although thankful the headaches had stopped, he had a feeling his students would be giving him a few that morning. It was just as well, Luo although unwilling to admit found himself somewhat missing the children he taught.

Correcting the manner in which he walked noticing a slight limp in his right leg, Luo mentally readied himself for the day before him. The lesson he was teaching today would at the very least provide Luo with some much needed amusement during his healing process.

Segare reveled in the night air on his walk home. Tired as he was, the cool crisp air that overtook the village after dark was refreshing, dare he say even invigorating. Thus, much as he wanted to get home and sleep, he found himself taking his time as he walked the path through the village. At this late hour the noise usually associated with this area was gone, leaving only the quiet sounds of nature and the wind through the bamboo to disturb the peace. A full moon had risen tonight, blanketing the world in a cool light, and he took the opportunity to observe the village at rest. Most of the buildings were quite simple structures, lean-tos or huts of pure bamboo construction, some wrapped in hides for extra protection against the weather. Some were of fancier construction, those of the slightly more wealthy inhabitants, who had hired some of the civilian contractors who had moved into the village recently. These displayed some impressive feats of architecture with stylized roofing and trim.

Others, he observed, were at the other end of the spectrum. Some, built by those too poor to hire help and without knowledge of construction, were little more than a tent. A few seemed to be basically cubes of bamboo, unattractive but functional. One particular oddity was built to raise higher than the rest, but without proper structural support had twisted in the middle, making a rather interesting impression of modern art. Somehow it had managed not to collapse entirely, but he couldn't help but notice the two who had built it had also managed to gain a nice sized yard in the process as everyone was too nervous to build near the hazard and risk their own home in the process.

But the crowning achievement he thought, as he passed by all of those, towards the far end of the residential district, had to be his own. Sitting apart from most of the other buildings, and easily larger than all, was Segare's mansion. And in comparison the all the others, that was exactly what it was. Painstakingly raised from the ground itself over the course of three entire weeks, the only part of this building made of bamboo was the carefully arched roof, the doors and the window shutters. No, the walls and floors of Segare's home were made entirely of sandstone, carefully raised into place and hardened by Segare himself. The job was made more difficult by the fact that he didn't know a technique to raise walls of sand directly, but with time and effort he had succeeded in building eight inch thick walls of sandstone hardened enough to withstand almost any weather. The bamboo roof kept any rain water from landing on the material and potentially eroding it, and the entire process left him with easily the most unique house in the village.

Once he'd raised it, he'd taken the time to go over every wall and carefully add edging along the entire surface to prevent it from being too plain, even going so far as to carve decorative trim around the windows and doors. And speaking of the windows, he had the distinction of having the only glass windows in the entire village as well, having supplied the sand himself and had a subordinate fire user melt it down in a stone mold, each piece was carefully cut and fit to his windows, and then covered in bamboo shutters just in case. Yes, on the outside, he had by far the most impressive house in the neighborhood.

On the inside however, it was a bit of another story. While he could make his walls and even windows himself, furniture was harder to come by, and he had little on hand besides that that most others had as well. Most of his valuables were kept in his office, locked safely away, so his home contained only that necessary to survive. A bedroom outfitted with a simple bed made of bamboo and little else besides a window to let the sun in. He had a kitchen with carefully smoothed sandstone counters, and bamboo cabinets to store what food he kept on hand. A closet held his various changes of clothes and any other amenities he'd picked up in his time here. The most impressive part of his home had to be the sitting room, outfitted with a few nice chairs he'd picked up on missions that had comfortable padding for extended sitting.

The extra chairs were purportedly for if he should have guests, though some accused him of simply being a collector of nice things. He supposed that argument might be validated somewhat by the fact that of the room's four walls, excluding the space for a door and the windows letting in liight, three and a half held bamboo bookshelves filled to the brim with books he'd, collected, while on missions, or had gifted to him by others who had noticed his love of the art form. The remaining space on the wall was dominated by a fireplace, not for cooking, but for comfort, that he kept readily stocked should he wish to light it on a particularly cold night, or just for the ambiance.

Smiling to himself, Segare entered his home, kicking off his boots at the door and closing it behind him. The floors, while made of sandstone, had been covered in a thick carpeting he had again, acquired on a mission. The only room lacking that feature being the kitchen, in case anything should be spilled. Going straight to his bedroom, Segare pulled his sword from his side and set it on his night table, along with the contents of high pockets and the keys off his belt, before removing his dirtied clothes entirely and tossing them into a bamboo hamper across the room. Task complete, he tucked himself into bed, finding sleep within moments. After all, it had been a rather long day.

Shikaku woke, sitting up with a gasp as the sensation of falling ended, leaving him bouncing against his bedroll. Groaning, he let his body go limp and fell back down to the bed, staring blankly up at the ceiling of his rather cramped room. Two weeks. For two weeks now, ever sense their lesson on meditation, he'd had the same dream, remembering his second attempt at the art, when something had invaded and, in his view of it, attacked him within his own mind. And he'd been reliving it every time he slept since. He didn't know what it was, why it had happened. The teachers hadn't said anything about something like that happening, and it had honestly scared him. He'd gotten up the next morning, well, technically he'd gotten up immediately as his meditation had somehow lasted all night, and run straight to class hoping to speak to Luo, only to be informed by a chuunin that Luo had taken ill overnight and wouldn't be able to teach for awhile. They'd then spent the next two weeks practicing stances and weapon throwing of all things, because Segare didn't want to continue ninjutsu lessons until Luo had taught them something. What, he didn't say.

Shikaku blinked, his eyes coming back to focus as something clicked in his mind. Luo... He'd gotten desperate sometime in the last week and a half and started stalking the man's house from a distance, hoping the man would emerge and he could see him, but all he ever saw was a medic entering, and leaving again. Luo himself never emerged, leaving Shikaku with nobody to approach. He'd considered Segare, but the man, kind as he was the majority of the time, hadn't seem overly enthused about meditation himself, and had blatantly pushed all questions towards Luo. And Rin... Rin was far too scary to approach with this.

Another blink, and Shikaku's slowly wakening mind recalled what it had been trying to remind him of. A message had arrived last night to inform them that Luo would be back the next day to teach lessons again. That the lesson would be early this morning... Eyes suddenly widening, Shikaku leapt to his feet, finally fully awake as he grabbed his gear from beside him, having slept fully clothed, and rushed out the door, shouting back that he was leaving early. Timmy could find his own breakfast, he needed to get to the field before anyone else arrived!

Enryu spent his morning experimenting with the basic stances taught to the students over the last two weeks. They came at little easier with every morning session though without a mirror inspecting his form was difficult. Unarmed combat wasn't a major component of his previous training but he retained enough of those lessons to apply these new stances better than most students would. Unsurprisingly, Taijutsu was one of areas Enryu more than matched the other students though never as much as those who had a natural aptitude to the art. His combat experience did a good job of simulating some sort of aptitude for the art and as a result, Taijutsu quickly became his preferred lesson.

Hesitant to work up much of a sweat before the lesson, Enryu cut his 'training' short, pulling a small assortment of throwing weapons from the wooden frame of his modest abode. Crafted from bamboo and covered in thick hide and canvas, Enryu's patched pavilion was extremely spartan but filed with empty to space to train. The interior consisted of no more than a sleeping mat and travelling bags stuffed with clothes or equipment. Most of his military gear was sold upon defecting from his outfit with the exception of the heavy standard issue short sword. He slipped that very weapon into the sash of his gi as he dressed himself, slipping his feet into a pair of worn ninja sandals before lifting the flap of the small pavilion and heading for the training fields.
