Welcome to Gaia.
To earn gold... you can post a lot on the forums or play the fishing game or stuff.
Basically everything you do earns you gold.

well everything you do earns you gold(g) and if you vote in polls you get 10g(literally im not joking) and the money you earn lets you buy stuff for your avatar (your character) and make it all nice and pretty
