tab Rising early was one thing Edric could never get used to. No matter how many times he was told that waking up early was important for this reason or that reason, he still couldn't bring himself to like it. Groaning, he turned over in bed as his alarm clock started up its angry chorus. [********, all right." one hand shot out of the tangled blankets to slap at the plastic device, shutting it off as he slowly pulled himself up. His nose wrinkled in distaste as he rolled out of bed, a hand running through his hair to try and get it out of his face. A monstrous yawn tore from his throat as he moved to the bathroom, scratching the back of his head. He was pretty sure he needed a shower, and while washing his hair always took far longer than he liked, he wanted it to look nice for the party tonight.

Not that he had anyone particular to impress, of course. The thought made him frown, stepping under the shower's heavy flow. Stupid oblivious Tyler with his stupid cute face and stupid cute smile and... he shook his head, dislodging that train of thought for now. He needed to get through his shower regimen, and thinking about his failure in love wasn't going to do him any favours. Rushing through the motions, it wasn't long before he was dressed and pulling on his boots. It was the first day back, and while normally they were expected to dress well, he figured that it was still the weekend and he could get away with it. He would change later, for dinner and the party, but for now he wanted to be comfortable. Besides, he was graduating at the end of the semester; what's the worst they could do? Suspend him? Hah, they were welcome to try.

Normally, he started his days with a run, but today he was allowing himself to slip. He was tired from the jet lag, and honestly, he just didn't have the energy for it right now. Besides, he'd probably run into T-that guy. He pursed his lips, taking the extra few minutes to dry his hair before pulling on a hat and heading out. It was snowing, being January and all, and frozen hair was not something that he particularly wanted to deal with. Supposedly it wasn't too cold, but he wasn't going to take chances when the consequences were so dire. His hair was important, mind you. A lined jacket and wool hat would keep him plenty warm, especially if he wasn't planning on actually being outside for any extended period of time. Mostly, he just wanted to wander and try and find a nice spot to see who was returning, maybe see if his brother was up and about yet.

He couldn't blame Toby for sleeping in, not after the late flight they'd caught. Technically, they had arrived very early this morning, but Edric had slept most of the flight as well as the car ride, so he tossed it all under the moniker of 'last night'. Yesterday had been a very busy day for the brothers, as it was only once a year that a birthday came around. Well, most years it was only once. A great lover of parties, the elder sibling had insisted that they throw one. There had been an argument, something about Toby not wanting all the fuss and how there would be a party at school the very next day, and so Edric had caved just a little; the party had been a small one, family and close friends as a private affair in the castle at home. He could never understand why his brother was so insistent on battling the fanfare, but he didn't want to make the younger boy uncomfortable, even if he did want to give him the world. Instead, Edric had settled for giving him a sharp new suit in a lovely shade of pink.

Taking the stairs two at a time, he landed heavily on his feet at the bottom. Tower rooms were usually the dreaded bedrooms, but Edric rather liked his; fewer people to complain about his loud music at all hours, and quicker access to the roof were unusual bonuses that most people didn't know how to appreciate. Now that he was down on the normal floors of the residential wing, he was beginning to see more people. Servants were toting bags this way and that, the occasional prince or otherwise important son strolling along to make sure everything was settled as they wanted, and Edric had to dodge elbows and suitcases to escape the halls unscathed. Choosing to take the back stairs to avoid the rush, it was interesting how one's attire changed the way you were treated in these halls, he found himself heading towards the Kitchens. Breakfast sounded about right, and he glanced at a wall clock to ensure that it wouldn't be dark and empty; eight o'clock, which meant he was in luck.

Sauntering through the castle halls, he slipped quietly into the kitchens unnoticed. If he crept slowly, and reached his hand just so he could definitely reach one of those muffins... "Young man, what do you think you're doing?" came a disapproving voice, and the prince jerked his hand back. A charming smile settled on his features, and he shoved his hands into his pockets. "I was just grabbing something to eat. I'm a growing boy, Martha." he grinned, rocking back on his heels to try and win over the stern-faced old woman staring him down. "Just give me one muffin, and I'll be out of your hair." he pleaded, smile growing as the stern expression on the woman's face falters. "One. And don't you tell nobody that I let you get away with it." she gave him a disapproving look, turning her back only after he'd snatched up his prize and exited the kitchen.

Muffin in hand, he wasted little time in taking a bite; it was fresh and warm and filled with fruit and nuts. Pleased with his choice, he continued his morning stroll of the castle, heading back towards the front doors and the bustle of new arrivals. He was receiving plenty of sidelong glances, likely due to his less than princely attire, but he paid them little mind; half of these kids were younger siblings or just had the right connections, people whose opinions were of no consequence. Shoving the last bit of muffin in his mouth, he hauled himself up along the stone wall until he could rest in one of the niches that adorned the opening hall. His legs dangled from his perch, a good ten feet off the ground, leaving him in prime position to watch for familiar faces where few would think to look. Up.

XXX"Rise and shine, Jackson! You don't want to be late on your first day back from winter break." This was the first thing Jackson heard that morning, the voice of his lovely Grandmother Elsa, followed by a playful spray of snow upon his face. This would have been quite the rude awakening if this had not been his grandmother's routine. Squinting his eyes he pushed himself up off the bed, raising his hand up to shield his eyes from both the glistening light coming from the window and the second spray of snow. "I'm up, Grandmother! I'm up!" Jack mumbled, sending a gentle spray of snow at Grandmother Elsa. "Good. Now hurry up and get changed! You've got to leave in an hour!" She said as Jackson swung his feet off the bed. As the elder woman left the room, Jackson proceeded to take shower, style his hair to a more reserved look, before getting dressed. He had picked out a very formal suit, black with accents of blue; his watch and cufflinks matched. A brilliant blue tie to match, simple white shirt and black dress shoes – he was styling. This was how he dressed for any form of formal events, and with the 'dinner and dance' happening at the end of the night he wanted to make sure he looked his best. He was a King, after all, and thus he could not be as informal as everyone else may or may not be. Of course he’d be allowed to slack off in his wardrobe during regular days of school, but it was really rare to see Jack without at least a dress shirt, suit pants and dress shoes on – this was just how he preferred to dress. Slipping on his black suppressing magic gloves he was ready to pack and grab something to eat.

XXXJack snapped his fingers, ordering a few servants around by getting them to pack yet another suitcase filled with clothing into the car that awaited him outside. Yes, he had a lot of clothing already at the academy, but these were new outfits from Christmas gifts (one which included the outfit he was wearing), and he wanted to wear them. Once that was done he went down stairs to the dinning hall to get something to eat for breakfast – a plate of bacon, eggs, toast, salmon and baked potatoes was waiting for him. Sitting down with Grandmother Elsa, Jack listened to the elder speak of Kingly responsibilities he’d have to do while at school (as if he hadn't already heard this all on the first day of school), while all the things she’d be able to take care of for him. It was annoying that he could not get a day off from some form of Kingly duties, but the fact that his grandmother was taking over some of his duties made him grateful. Finishing his food in record time, now stuffed to the gills, Jack kissed Grandmother Elsa goodbye as he headed towards the pearl white limo waiting for him. With his bag packed in the trunk, and the air conditioning blasting to make things cold, the boy stepped into the car, the butler closing the door behind him. The boy didn’t like cars, since they were so compact, but he preferred them to boats any day. Opening the windows so he could feel the snow and coolness of the air so he didn’t feel as confined, the limo took off – it’s destination Ever After Academy.

                      A Few Hours Later

XXX“We’re here, my King.” The butler said as the limo came to a halt. It felt like forever before they finally arrived at Ever After Academy, it's walls and land covered in a beautiful glistening layer of snow, and Jack was glad the ride was over. As soon as the butler opened the door Jack stepped out of the vehicle, taking a calm breath of cold air before smoothing out his suit – he hated cars, and he hated how sitting in them threatened to wrinkle his suits, but he didn't mind the feeling of his dress shoes crunching in the snow. As if the academy knew he was coming a few of his personal servants at the school came running out to help the King with his bag. “This way, sir.” One of the servants called, determined to escort the young King to his quarters. It wasn’t as if Jack had never been to his room before, but he didn’t argue – nothing good came out of arguing pointless things. Thus Jack followed the servants to his quarters, being greeted by a nice cool room. Of course he preferred it even colder, but that would only be achieved by using his magic. “Do you need anything else, sir?” Jack shook his head, “No, thank you. You may leave now.” And the servants did as ordered – they left Jack’s quarters. Upon hearing the door shut Jack took off one of his gloves, flexing his black fingers, before flicking his wrist – snow shot out from his hands as he began to make it snow, dropping the temperature in the room until it was cold enough for the furniture to be littered with icicles and small piles of snow. A small smirk formed on his face, pleased with his work as he put back on his glove.

XXXAs much as Jack wanted to stay in his room, read a book or something, he could not – being one of the highest ranked students at the academy he had an obligation to socialize, mingle with the teachers and principle before dinner. Needless to say it was boring, speaking politics and other ‘important’ things, but he was a King and that is what Kings do. He tried to avoid speaking with students as much as possible, but it was hardly avoidable given he was in a school. “Well, Jack, lets get this over with…” Jack muttered to himself as he left his room, reluctantly closing the door. With that Jack looked around to see if there were any teachers around for hims to speak with, and thus be began to roam the cool halls, hoping to get the mingling over as quickly as possible so he could return to his cold, dark, perfect winter wonderland…

Parties weren’t really Toby’s thing. Well, scratch that, big parties weren’t really Toby’s thing. He liked following his brother around at big kingdom-wide events, but he wasn’t about to plan one for himself. There just didn’t seem like anything worth making such a big deal about. He wasn’t king, and he wasn’t going to be king, not unless something went terribly horribly wrong- and that was territory he was not fielding under any circumstance. He was never going to be the crown prince, and he therefore felt he was never going to need such a huge affair in his honour. It was with that in mind that he had tampered down Edric’s need to party plan for Toby’s sixteenth birthday.

They still had a party which was comparatively much smaller than Edric’s usual faire, but it was still rather over the top, as far as Toby was concerned. All of their family had been invited, from both the land and the sea, and all of their friends and extended friends who could make it. Toby had insisted they not invite anyone from school, as they would be seeing them at another party the next day and it would be very stressful for people to be flying all over the world in such a short time frame. Even so, the number of people that had turned up at Toby’s “small party” had been rather considerable, and getting them all to leave at the end of the night had been a pain. Toby had enjoyed himself, but it combined with traveling back to the academy the same night had completely exhausted him.

It wasn’t that Toby wasn’t excited to be turning sixteen. He very much was. There were so many possibilities open to him now, simply because he was one year older. There was so much apparent freedom in sixteen compared to fifteen. At sixteen, Toby could potentially get away with drinking without it being such a huge deal. Underage drinking still wasn’t encouraged, by any means, but something about sixteen seemed more acceptable. He was in the stage of teenagerhood where it was nearly expected of him to misbehave, so his small discrepancies would be overlooked- which was good, because his friend Fox had bought him a rather generous amount of booze for his big day, along with a rather impressively engraved flask, and he was not going to let all of it go to waste just because the law huffed at him a bit. Sixteen also meant driving, a later curfew, and the ability to go out and stick metal rings in his body if he felt so inclined. He didn’t, mostly, but it was nice to know that the option was there.

The other liberation of sixteen was Elliot Rider.

When Toby had been fifteen, there had been a three year gap between them. The gap was too much for a lot of people to overlook, although Toby didn’t see the big fuss. He had slept with a senior before. He was mature enough. Elliot didn’t seem to agree, though. However, as a sixteen year old, Toby was now only two years younger than Elliot. That had to be more acceptable. It was legal, certainly. He just hoped moral quibbles didn’t get in the way once again.

Elliot might have had the reputation of being a player, but Toby had put the pieces together differently. Elliot flirted with anything that could walk, and Toby had caught him kissing random boys on more than one occasion, but it seemed much more controlled and contained. It was more like Elliot wanted people to think of him that way. Toby couldn’t hold it against him, as he too had dabbled around a little since they had first met, but… oh, how we wished Elliot would finally take him seriously. He seemed to, most of the time, but any time Toby started to press too close, Elliot would pull away. Flirting was fine. Kissing seemed okay. But if Toby mentioned dinner off handedly, or suggested they go somewhere a little bit more private… well, Elliot was off like a shot.

Toby tried not to take it too personally. There were a lot of other boys that didn’t get nearly as much attention from Elliot, after all.

The alarm by Toby’s bed read that it was time to get up. He groaned. It wasn’t that it was early that was the problem. Moreso, it was the extreme lack of sleep he was running on. Unlike Edric, Toby could not sleep on planes, and had not slept on his way to their school in the slightest. He felt like the dead. Nevertheless, he pulled himself out of his bed and went about making it before going in search of some proper clothes.

Being back home with servants had been very strange. They had servants at school, of course, but they were more like cleaning staff that popped in on occasion to make sure that the students were picking up after themselves. There was no one to make his bed for him, so he had to do it himself. At home, there was some one bustling into his room as soon as his alarm was going off, just to see if Toby wanted some help out of his pyjamas and into his suit. Toby had rather embarrassingly declined and pointed out that he had not needed help in dressing since he was a small child. The servant still came in every day to offer.

Toby yanked the bright green shirt he was wearing and tossed it into the hamper along with his underpants before heading to his bathroom for a quick shower. When he returned, he dressed quickly in smart grey dress pants, a grey vest, and a white dress shirt. He took a black tie with a single rose embroidered on the bottom and tucked it into the vest. Edric would surely be displeased that Toby hadn’t opted for the bright pink… ‘suit’ he had given his brother for his birthday, but Toby wasn’t sure he had the kind of gumption to pull off something so wild so soon after returning to the academy. Or ever. As much as he wanted to wear the suit, there was something about it that was too flamboyant even for his dreams.

Next to the suit hung a series of coloured dress shirts, badly coloured hawaiin shirts, and hideously bright jumpers that he only dreamed of someday wearing outside the confines of his room.

For now, his smart grays and blacks would have to do.

With a deep breath, Toby finally stepped out of his room. He would find food first and then see if anyone he knew had arrived yet. Food, and perhaps a nice cup of tea.

that world is calling so i'm crawling back to sea
