This may not be much help...
To make the place where you slash/cut the jeans fray, like the bottoms, put them in the wash a few times after. It helps them get frayed.
(I found this out unintentionally when I was making a jean skirt sweatdrop )

A cool random thing to add color:
get some felt from like walmart and cut it into random shapes like stars, circles and squares then saftey pin or sew thwm on randomly.
