                                  • A perfect precursor for the Ranta Festival, it was a beautiful summer's day outside to most people. A sweltering 29 degrees, it was probably a great to head to the beach if you didn't have work. But inside a small house in Hachi, it was a very cool 20 degrees thanks to the super powerful Mujitsu air conditioner that had been installed right in the middle of the last summer. In fact, this little house had been cooled to a comfy 20 degrees since the middle of the third week of Spring. Standing by her drawn windows, the Grinch of summer peeped out through a small gap between the curtains, her sunglasses slipping ever so slightly down the bridge of her nose.
"Summer. " she spat out with distain as she took another bite out of her refrigerator chilled pear. Chewing on it with a look of spite as if it had just insulted the very fibre of her being, she continued gazing out into the street as if she owned the whole place. Yue had nothing better to do. She was bored out of her mind but if she went onto the street, she'd have to do what she's usually paid to do, deal with people. And why would she want to do that for free? Scrunching up her nose at the thought of it, she took one last bite out of her pear. A small translucent square formed around the pear's core and in a split second it found itself in her kitchen's bin.

Of all days, the Ranta Festival had to be held on a work day. A money making day. Yue felt rather conflicted between her love of enjoying festivities and her love of money. Yue hoped that preparations for the Ranta Festival would go smoothly, but at the same time if everyone was healthy and safe then her clinic would be out of business. A blink and she was in her kitchen. Finishing that pear had somehow made her hungrier. She opened her fridge and absentmindedly stared at its contents until it started beeping at her.
Stupid thing.” Yue grumbled as she slammed the fridge door close, its cushy plastic rims not allowing her to hear a satisfying slam as it shut. Moving to her cupboard, she opened it to once again stare. There was nothing in there that she could eat without putting in some effort and the finishing the pear had somehow had made her even hungrier.
Guess, it’s time to go grocery shopping…But, lunch first. I guess.” With a huff, she grabbed her parasol and left the comfort of her air-conditioned house, stepping out into the heat. It reminded her of that one world where she had to fight off those bird-men. At least it was (relatively) peaceful here. She winced. Why was she doing things the hard way again?

Blink. She was at the front of the Bakery. Words can't describe how much she loved the smells which came out from the Bakery. Apart from her office and her home, the Bakery was probably her favourite place on Yatashki. She took deep breaths of the fragrance of freshly baked goods, the smell immediately lifting her mood.
Her eyes slowly shifted to her left to look at the person standing next to her. Rosinante Blanche. Rose was one of those few people she somehow didn't instinctively dislike. Perhaps it was because was wasn't really a person per se, but an alicorn.
"Oh, hello Rose! Fancy seeing you here. What're you going to get? " Small talk wasn't exactly her forte as Yue often avoided it when she could. But, Rose was a friend and so Yue couldn't pass up the chance to catch up with her.
"Have you had a busy day today? How’s business at the Pet Shop? " The moon rabbit scanned the various delectables on display and licked her lips. As much as she'd love to get some macarons or some profiteroles, she felt like something slightly more substantial would be more worth her money. Perhaps a cream bun. Or maybe a slice of cake? Cake was quite filling. But what kind of cake? As she searched the shelves for her cake of destiny, her eyes fell on something on the shelf below, pain au chocolat. Pain au chocolats were also filling. But so were custard cornets. And Danish pastries. And caramel slices. And...Oh, the number of choices was just about to driver her insane. A good kind of insane. Snapping out of her reverie, she decided that she needed some help.
"What do you think I should get, Rose? I can't decide…" she looked up at the alicorn pleadingly. If it were left up to her, she'd be standing here until the Ranta Festival was over.

                                      • With the straps of her duffle bag hanging limply from her fingers, Faye shuffled her feet, almost kicking the leather suitcase that she had placed close to her. Eyes downcast, she stared at the tracks as she waited for her train to the Academy of Vou. It was a miracle that she had survived her first year and she wondered whether she'd survive her second. As she continued to stare at the metal bars, she pondered the meaning of her own existence and independence, whether people's souls wandered around their bodies after they died and what she'd be having for lunch once she got back to the Academy. Standing next to her was a man in his early 20s, bespeckled but tall and almost model-like with his clothing choice and his silvery hair combed back. Wearing an unreadable expression, he kept his eyes on the screen of his phone as whispers of passerbys reached his ears. "What a young father! I bet he couldn't afford to keep her and now he's just sending his daughter off to her death." "How cruel. His girlfriend's about to cry and he's just looking at his phone." “Is he making her carry his things? What a douche.” With a click of his tongue, the man known as Fiore d'Alteri finally glanced down sideways at his younger sister.

"Faye." Her shoulders hunched up for a brief second as Faye flinched at the sound of her brother’s voice. Not knowing what to say to each other, the siblings had just been standing there in silence for the past half an hour. She didn’t expect that he'd be the one to break it.
"YE-ES!?!" she answered with slightly more enthusiasm than she had meant to, her voice cracking in the process. With her cocked slightly to the side, she looked up at him with her puppy-like eyes that had started to tear up from staring at the tracks for too long. Her face started to redden as she felt the stares of passers by who had been startled by her sudden outburst. Fiore remained unfazed.
"I heard Father wasn't too happy about your rank at Vou. Don't think too much of it." Faye silently nodded at his words. Apparently her father was a kinder man before their Uncle was deposed. He'd spend much more time with his children and had taught all but Faye a special technique. However, his current attitude was all Faye had known and she couldn't bring herself to believe that he was any different before. To hope that he would treat her like he treated her siblings would be too much of a wish.

"But, you do know Father's still expecting you to reach SA rank by the end of your time at Vou, right?" He asked, his tone measured as he spoke. Out of her 4 siblings, Fiore was the most sincere despite his rather stern looks. He had always been the one to escort her to school on the first day of the school year as requested by their mother. Yet despite making a sour face whenever he was asked to do so in the past, here he was on his own accord. He just happened to have a meeting with some other hunters in Vou and coincidentally had some time to kill. Just like he did at this same time last year.
"Yeah." she smiled. "Assuming that I don't die trying this year." Adjusting the strap of her satchel which had been slowly slipping off her shoulder, a breeze blew by signalling the arrival of the train.
"I guess it's-Whoa!" As Faye turned to face her brother, the heel of her shoe caught on the corner of her suitcase and threatened to throw her off balance. Waving her arms wildly in the air, she somehow managed to steady herself and gave her brother a sheepish smile as he pretended not to see her almost-blunder.
"Um, anyway, thanks for seeing me off, Fio. I know you're really busy. I'll see you later." With a nod of his head, Faye set boarded the train, carrying her bag in one hand and pulling along her suitcase in the other.
"Well. Good luck." Fiore gave his sister a cursory wave as Faye the gesture with slightly more enthusiasm from her seat by the window.

                                        - - -T I M E S K I P - - -

"Alisia Tempus." Blinking at the new name and picture of a girl a couple of times, Faye thought that she seemed like a fairly nice person if pictures and names were any indication of a person’s niceness. Whilst that was good and all, she sighed at the prospect of her upcoming year going just as well as it did last year. Was she going to get another earful from her father when she got back this year? Apparently, her old partner had transferred out. She had found her true calling to be a patisserie, or so Faye was told. None of her siblings ever had their partners desert them before graduating. Perhaps if she moved up a rank or two by the end of the year she'd be able to avoid his wrath. Faye scoffed at her own idea. What was she thinking? Her? Move up a rank? Yeah right. "Well, I hope she’s happier now." thought Faye. Surely, she hadn't done something wrong to chase her away. Had she? Was it because she was too weak? Was because she wasn't gung ho enough about grimm killing? Was it because she'd let her partner know every time she heard a rustle? Or was it the fact that her equivalent of "Let's go" that she says before every mission was "Let's not die today"? It was a pretty good catchphrase in her opinion. But, whatever. This year was a new year and Faye was absolutely determined that she'd continue to keep her new partner till graduation. She glanced at her communicator again.
"Lunch at the garden. Perhaps, I'll find her there." She brought up the map on her communicator and flinched at the sight of the maze surrounding it. She stared at it before shaking off her hesitation. She found a nearby bench and sat down. This time, she was going to plan her route before setting off. This time, she wasn't going to get lost, get fed up, parkour her way through the hedges and end up with her foot in a pot of borscht. No. This time, she was going to walk in like a normal person.

Following her own instructions to a T, she was able to make her way through the garden maze and to the luncheon in no time. "Yes! I did it! Good job Faye." Faye thought to herself as she celebrated her own small victory with a small fist pump. "Your new school year has just started perfectly. This might be your year, Faye d’Alteri…unless you screw things up and lose your partner to the hospitality industry again. But that’s only the second worst thing that can happen!" She lowed her slightly raised hand, looked around to see if anyone had seen her rather embarrassing display of self-congratulations and headed to the food table. In her peripheral, she noticed someone lying on the floor."Must be a first year. Some kind hearted and dependable senior should go and help her! Wait! I am a kind senior! Or, at least the very least I am probably older than she is. But I am definitely not dependable. She's better off being helped by someone else instead of being dragged down the road to ruin by me..." As she continued her journey to the food table, she noted the presence of someone wolfing down some food by himself and wondered what Kingdom he had come from for as far as she knew, there were none that had major food shortages. She shook her head. Who was she to be making such judgements? Perhaps he was just very hungry. After plating up some lasagne for herself, she settled down in seat at the corner of the garden, keeping an eye out for her new partner.

                                    • Yue looked up at the impressive hole in the café ceiling. As far as she was concerned, she was not responsible for that and neither was Rose. The ceiling was just too low. Listening to the alicorn, she continued to consider which sweet treat to partake in. Her eyes narrowed at the mention of Nico. Yeah, she knew of him. That dolt had somehow ended up uninvited on her living room couch one day but he was generally an ok dude. His seemly never ending energy always wore her out but he often gave her free things - and that had given him an indefinite free pass to her good side immediately.
"I’m sure he’ll come around if you talk to him some more. You’re the vet! Say that you know animals better than he does! Use your authority!" That said, she knew that Nico couldn’t be easily persuaded and that Rose probably had already tried her best to make the Pet Shop Owner see the light. Yue considered offering to go with Rose to try to convince him as well, but she doubted that she would be any more effective. With a sigh, she decided to offer an alternative.
"But if that fails, just try to give those little critters a new home faster. How about organising an adoption day? There’s gotta be someone on this wacko island who wants a ferret or a parrot."

Yue stared pensively at the mooncakes.
"How nostalgic. I think I will have one of those." The moon rabbit always loved things that had a resemblance or connection to the moon. But there was something slightly more behind her like for this particular treat. Her eyes widened at the mention of “mid-autumn festival”, the alicorn never ceased to surprise her with random facts that she pulled out of nowhere.
"Wow, I’m surprised you knew that! I actually used to have them around that time…where I was originally from." As she continued to look at the mooncakes, Yue wondered how everything was going back in her home world. “Tsukito and Hikari must’ve grown up a lot by now. I hope everyone else is doing well back there. Ah, I miss mum’s mochi." Thinking about the rest of her family would've made her tear up 5 years ago. But now, it only gave her a feeling of longing. A slight tug in her chest, but nothing more. By now she had almost given up trying to get back – she had a roof over her head, a steady income and her family were none the worse off, after all they had 5 other children. Turning her attention back to Rose, Yue inspected her choice of treat.
"Excellent choice. And yes, it does look like a cloud, now that you mention it. Since you're having such a hard time with Nico, this'll be my treat."

Heard a voice that seemed to be addressing them from behind. She immediately recoiled upon recognising who it was. "Yes, it was certainly a beautiful day…until you arrived." Eliza the police officer. Yue always had conflicting feelings towards the staff of the emergency centre. It started with her prejudice against their medic, whom she saw as a customer stealer rather than a lifesaving comrade. Somehow, over time that prejudice had spread from one person to the whole of the emergency centre. So the moon rabbit disliked the police woman even before she had met her. And after she met her? Her dislike only grew. God, this woman was annoying! Always coming in with small scratches and things that really didn't require her time. Couldn't she have consulted that medic of theirs?

Taking a step between Rose and the policewoman, Yue attempted to send "Go away! Leave us alone!" vibes to the newcomer who had joined them as she greeted her.
"Hello… Eliza." she said through gritted teeth. Seeing how often Eliza had come to her clinic, Yue was well aware of the woman’s preferences and there was no chance in hell that she was going to let her get to her innocent little alicorn friend.
"Are you having lunch? Well, don’t let us hold you up. Let’s go pay for our desserts, Rose." Yue placed a hand on Rose’s shoulder as she tried to usher her away to the cashier, hoping that her kind hearted companion wouldn’t invite her to join them.

                                        • Alert. She was so alert with her eyes wide open and attentively glancing left and right for signs of her partner. Faye was so ready to ravel off her introductory speech that went something along the lines of "Hello. My name is Faye d’Alteri. Starting from today, I’m your new partner! It's very nice to meet you! Welcome to Vou. How are you liking it so far?" But, she saw no sign of her arriving and turned back to her lasagne. She forked a piece into her mouth.
"Hey! Faye right?” Faye’s eyes widened as she immediately straightened up in her seat. She nearly choked upon hearing her name. The one moment she decided to let her guard down and her partner arrives. Their meeting couldn't have started any better. "Oh! My! God! She's here! Already!?! I knew she was coming, but! But! What do I do? What do I say!?! " The words to her pre-planned introduction flew out her mind as Alisia sat down next to her.

"I, don't mind." she managed to splutter out, trying to swallow back the bits of lasagne stuck in her throat that she’d previously almost choked on. “Calm down, Faye. Sure, she’s prettier than her picture, taller than you imagined and can probably eat more sponge cake than you judging by that pile on her plate. But you have a higher rank…But somehow, she gives off this aura of experience! What do I do if she’s like a martial arts pro or something?" As she listened to her new partner introduce herself, Faye sat stiffly in her seat, robotically eating her lasagne as if someone was forcing her at knife point to clear the plate. In reality, the lasagne was brilliant but she was so nervous she couldn't taste it anymore. Her mind scrambled to remember the words to her pre-planned introduction. She could only remember the exclamation marks but at least that was a start.

"It's n-n-n-n-knife to meet you too! I see you like sponge cake. I like sponge cake too. They’re very fluffy…and soft. What is wrong with you Faye d'Alteri!?! Oh, I’m such a moron!” With a rigid smile, Faye attempted to unsuccessfully hide her embarrassment but she felt herself heating up the longer she maintained eye contact. Looking away, her eyes found its way once more to Alisa’s plate. She couldn’t help but notice that she had a rather large pile of sponge cake. Did she just really like sponge cake or was there a sponge cake shortage in her Kingdom? Either way, Faye was glad that she seemed to be enjoying it. But if she enjoyed it too much, would she also want to leave her and become a patissier too?
"Meeting new people is great fun! I just love meeting new people too!…Unless they're new second or third years, ‘cause that just means someone's transferred, been so incapacitated that they can't continue to remain at the academy or dead.” Faye flashed Alisia an awkward smile, the last word rolled off her tongue so blasély that even buying a new handbag would’ve sounded like a more serious task. Suddenly, her eyes widened realising that she may have said something that her new partner may misunderstand.
BUt that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy meeting you! Though we've just met, you seem like a wonderful person and I hope- -you won’t be too disappointed once you learn what an absolutely incompetent failure I- stop! stOP! STOP! NEGATIVITY BEGONE! You don’t want to lose her so quickly by demeaning yourself! Come on, Faye d’Alteri! –our future team mates are just going to be as nice as you are. Yeah! Oh, and, for the record, my previous partner was still alive when I saw her last year. I definitely did not cause her to leave or anything, I think. She left the academy to follow her dreams and now she's a pastry. I mean, a patissier. Or, so I’ve heard…" She shovelled the remainder of her now cold lasagne into her mouth and chewed before swallowing.

"So, um, I hope you don’t mind me asking… but what brings you to Vou?” Faye was honestly really really curious as to why she had transferred as a second year. Maybe she just wanted a change. Maybe her past academy wasn’t good enough for her. Maybe the academy she was at had run out of funds and had to close down. Maybe the Grimm had attacked whatever kingdom she came from and run it to the ground and now she’s a refugee who’s lost all her friends and family in battle against them and coming to Vou was her last chance at becoming a hunter. Maybe her imagination was getting the best of her.
"It’s not often that we get transfer- Oh! But please don’t force yourself to answer. I know we’ve just met and my question may be a bit personal. Um, let’s see…what’s a safe question? What’s your favourite colour? No, that’s a silly question. How about- Oh no! I’m thinking out loud again, aren't I?! Um, uh, um, ah! What do you think of Vou so far?

                                      • Sometimes Rose was just too nice. Having predicted her response the moment Eliza started talking to them, Yue managed to hold back her utter repulsion at the idea. Eliza was someone she could only spend so much time around before wanting to bolt away.
"No, I think Miss Eliza has plenty of other things to do." she whispered back, "And I'm fine. Really. Totally. Fine. Now, I am going to buy you those cream-" Just as she turned to walk on and continue with her absolutely wonderful day, the police officer started to ramble on. Yue stopped in her tracks like a rabbit in the headlights. It was a habit of hers to just listen whenever someone spoke. A habit developed out of her desire to be a conscientious doctor who listens to the woes of her patients. No matter how long they'd drone on for, she'd attentively listen. It was a habit she sometimes cursed, especially during times like these. “Great. Just Great. I always wanted to listen to you drone on about your past and your lack of experience Eastern desserts…” Despite her thoughts and her strained smile, Yue was listening and would remember what Eliza had just told her if someone were to ask about it a week later.

When Eliza stopped herself, Yue breathed a sigh of relief and gave her a sparkling smile. Finally, she could get on with her life.
"Personally, I’d recommend some mochi. I’ve tried the strawberry mochi from here once and it was almost as good as the ones from back home. It’s a desserts that’s sweet and chewy. And rather sticky so it sometimes gets stuck in people’s throats. Perfect for making people shut up!” After giving her two cents on the matter, Yue decided it was time to make an exit and opened her mouth to farewell the police officer. But alas, Eliza's voice filled the air once again and Yue swore that if she were to roll her eyes in exasperation at that very moment, they'd be lost at the back of her head for all eternity. “GODDAMMIT WOMAN!!! And here I thought I was finally free.” The moon rabbit stopped in her tracks once again to listen to what she had to say. Unexpectedly, it wasn’t just another mind-numbing ramble and Eliza had more to offer than expected.
"Well look who's useful for once. Rose here works for the Pet Shop and she just happens to have some ferrets she wants to give a loving forever home to. How many do you have exactly Rose? " As she let Rose answer, Yue looked around for someone she could order the desserts from. The Café seemed to have gotten much more crowded whilst they were chatting away. Finding that the Café Owner had wandered off somewhere, she wondered whether to take matters into her own hands. She could teleport the sweet delights out from their abode in the display cabinet and into her hands but that'd look like she was trying to steal them when she fully intended to pay for them. Would leaving money on the counter before teleporting them make a less dubious impression? But how about if someone saw her take them but hadn’t seen her leave the money? Lost in her thoughts, the appearance of the Cashier from seemingly nowhere made her step back in fright. Yue gasped inaudibly and gulped. “God, that scared the beejeezles outta me!” Quickly regaining her calm, she ordered the moon cake and cream puffs from them before turning her attention back to Eliza and Rose.

"I'm sure the ferrets have formed some sort of comradery after battling it out together against those rowdy parrots. I bet they'd feel absolutely heartbroken if only one of them were able to leave. And, seeing as Eliza here seems to be so enthusiastic, I'm sure she would be glad to take all of them. Isn't that right, Eliza?" the moon rabbit smiled innocently. In Yue's humble opinion, taking away Rose's recent headaches was the least Eliza could do if she wanted to be acquainted with that shy beauty of the town.

Paying the Cashier in whatever currency they used in Yatashki, Yue received two paper bags containing the sweet treats she had purchased and handed the one containing cream puffs to Rose.
"Here you go, cream puffs. I guess since Eliza wants those ferrets, we’d best get them to her now. Shall we all head over to the Pet Store? Please say yes so that this one over here doesn’t forget and her enthusiasm doesn’t die down. It'd be great if your problems could be cured today...

                                            - BEEP -

Uh, as you know, I took History, and I know you warned me against it cause I was failed it in high school, but I thought the assessment was gonna be easy. Anyway, there's this excursion I gotta attend next Wednesday, cause I heard you can get extra credits by going, but I accidentally told Aya-chan that I was free and … I got a date. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry! I know I'm an idiot. But I need you to take my place. I tried asking Rihito-nii and Rika but they told me to piss off. I've been listening to the lectures online so the professor doesn't even know my face. Please, Ritsu-nee!!! I'll text you the details later! I owe you one! Bye bye!"

Ritsuka slowly opened her eyes to the sound of a running stream. Her head felt heavy and the ceiling did not look like what she had been expecting. Wooden beams and lanterns lined the ceiling instead of off-white tiles and a bright white lightbulb. Instead of a hard creaky bed, she was in a fairly soft futon on the floor. This certainly wasn’t the hospital. She closed her eyes again. Unexpectedly, apart from her throbbing head, she felt no pain in her limbs. Perhaps this was a dream? Perhaps she was in some sort of old fashioned medical centre near the palace they had been visiting? The last thing she remembered was falling. She had been on a field trip that she wasn't even meant to be on but had agreed to go on for the sake of her brother. She had done all the prescribed readings too, just in case the professor was to ask "Rei Miyamoto" a question. But whilst walking in a group with 4 other girls, the floor suddenly gave way. She opened her eyes again, tilting her head left and right as she looked around the room. She could see an opened sliding door, leading out to what appeared to be a veranda on her right. In front of her was a short wooden table, shelves with a scattering of books, tea pots and a vase of flowers lined the wall behind it. Just beneath one of the shelves was her backpack, intact and not looking the least lonely with her shoes next to it. To her left was another sliding door that she assumed would probably lead her further in. It was a tranquil room that didn't give off a bad feeling.

Getting to her feet, she stretched her arms and wandered towards the shelves as the books had piqued her interest. However, upon looking inside, Ritsuka found that the writing was so stylised that she couldn't make out what was written. Placing it back, she decided to explore a little thinking that no one would miss her too much if she stepped out for a couple of minutes. Sliding open the washi paper covered door, she stepped out into the hallway and was faced with a whole line of such doors. Every door she opened seemed to just lead to another room that looked identical to the one she had just left and there seemed to be no end to the number of sliding doors to open. By now, Ritsuka had gathered that she was not in a remote medical centre and was starting to feel a little tense. Where was she? How long had it been since she had woken up? Why was this place deserted? But seeing no one she could talk to, she continued her exploring.

She wandered around for what felt like an hour, opening door after door. Feeling a little vexed after finding a few doors which were either stuck or locked and resisting the urge to poke a hole through the washi paper to peak at what lay behind the door, she picked up the pace, slamming open doors as she strode from room to room. Finally, she found one with a bit more individuality. It was a quaint room adjacent to a peaceful lake. Its floors were strewn with a few books and the faint hint of tobacco lingered in the air. Taking measured steps into the room, she picked up one of the books off the floor as she made her way in to get a better view of the lake. Flipping open the book open, she found pictures of naked women. Pages upon pages of painted naked women. With a silent gasp and a flick of her wrist, she flung the book as far away as she could, the innocent object landing with a splash in the lake. Her face changed from a brilliant red to the white of her futon's sheets as she watched the book sink below the water's surface. She had just trashed the belongings of someone she didn't even know.
"Oh s**t! Oh my god! What do I do? I shouldn't have- But it was- And I- I- I- I gotta get out of here." Unable to find an exit but remembering that the room she had woken up had a veranda, she hurriedly dashed back to it. Sliding the door close behind her, she hastily put her shoes on and swung her backpack over her shoulder. Digging into her coat pocket, she fished out her mobile.
No signal and only 5% battery!?! You’ve got to be kidding me!

In a huff, she made her way onto the veranda … to find that it was not in fact a veranda but a balcony. She walked to the balcony’s edge and leant onto the wooden rails surrounding it. Below was a rushing river, shallow and littered with jagged rocks. And around her, misty evergreen forest. Ritsuka puffed a resigned sigh at the sight. It was a lovely view but now things had become more complicated for her. The only glimmer of freedom was the thin tiled edging right below the wooden railings that seemed to wrap around and lead to the front of the building. Her eyes remained fixed on them as she considered her options. She could walk on the tiles and risk slipping, falling and breaking her neck on the river’s rocks. Or, she could make the futon sheets into a makeshift ladder and trash more of the house owner’s property.
"Well…you know what they say…YOLO!" and with that she climbed over the railings. Standing on tiptoes and gripping the railings for dear life, Ritsuka started inching across.

                                                    • She was named "Altair" after the one of the stars in the summer triangle which represented the cowherd in the old tale of "the weaver girl and the cowherd". Unfortunately, she had serious doubts as to whether she was ever going to be as strong or independent as she had heard cowherd were. With her upper half sprawled out on her desk, her clear sky blue eyes watched the red digits of the clock change as the seconds passed by. Typed out above it on the display in a rectangular box was “17:30 - CR21 S3-A”, a reminder of the meeting that she had later on in the day.
"Deneb-ah." she breathed out. Sitting cross-legged on her chair, her hands held up a worn grey-white lump of stitched cloth and fibre. If one stared at it for long enough (or looked at it when drunk), it could almost resemble a cat or an obese mouse. But Altair would tell you otherwise. It was actually a chinchilla. She received it on her 8th birthday from the scientist who named her (and who unfortunately had no skill in sewing) and has treasured it dearly ever since. The day before the big mission, whatever it was going to be, Altair spent her time mulling over what to do with the few possessions that she owned. She didn't know if she actually owned them or if whatever she had were considered to be on loan to her but she made a will anyway. The only item that she hadn’t worked out a plan for was the one in her hands.

"Tomorrow… I'm going to die." she breathed out, her expression a tad too relaxed for the phrase that had left her lips. "I wonder if they'll bring my body back…or if I'll even have a body they can bring back." The sudden urge to roll around gripped her soul and so she attempted to fulfil it. But the effect of her actions lead to her chair being pushed further from the desk and with a resounding smack, she hit her head against the table's ledge. The blonde let out a something between a yelp, a squawk and a string of nonsensical garble as she slid onto the floor, placing a hand to the back of her head. She glared accusingly at the table, just to feel sorry for doing so. Crawling on the floor, Altair leisurely found her way to the bed. Rolling onto her back, she lifted the plushie into the air, its stitched eyes looking back down on her.

"Ah, Deneb, what should I do?" she asked, pressing her forehead onto her inanimate friend and giving it a nuzzle. As far as controlling her powers went, she was a natural at it. Altair could amplify the power of multiple people at a time and adjust how much each person’s power was amplified so finely that the scientists could calculate it to a percentage figure. Not that that meant much to her though. After all, she was only useful if there was someone else who she could amplify. On her own, she reckoned that she’d be as good as dead. A living target. Live bait. Her arms were thin and her legs, which were only slightly more muscular, were only good at short distance sprinting. As inept as anyone could get, especially when her guard was down which was almost all the time, she wondered if her first step outside would result in her tripping over a rock and splitting her head open. She breathed out a sigh at the thought. If she really were to die without contributing to the mission, it’d really be something. The only thing she hoped to do was to be useful in some way, no matter how small it was.

"You have to outlive me, Deneb. So I won't bring you along tomorrow, even if I wanted to have my corpse buried with you… Ah! If I can't be brought back, they can bury you in my place." Motivated by her idea, she scrambled to her desk and typed up a quick memo to her closest scientist, the one who named her. By the time she had finished, the memo read like a mix between a thank you letter and a suicide note. As she pressed send, her eyes flickered over to the clock on the right bottom corner.
"Ah, it's about time." hopping onto her feet, she grabbed a coat from and headed out.

The corridors were slightly more busy than usual and Altair guessed that they were prepping for tomorrow’s big mission. As she made her way to the control room, she sighted two people, and then another two. As fellow experiments, they were familiar to her. There was "Yu-unnie" who, in her opinion, was the coolest of them all since her powers had awoken first and whose bibimbap would make for a swell last supper. "Hwa-no, Henry-oppa" who she had exchanged simple greetings with on a regular basis but whom she had never really gotten the chance to know well. "Flo-oppa" who she had occasionally trained with and whose calm vibes often put her at ease. And, "Tae-oppa" who was the same age as she was and but whose powers had awoken just before hers and was thus an "oppa" because the word sounder better than "sunbae". She attempted to wave at them, but carried along with a sudden influx of scientists who were carrying boxes of something somewhere and hidden by their towering shadows, she didn't get the chance to greet them. Reaching the control room, she stood beside the door, leaning slightly on the wall with her hands behind her back. Not wanting to walk in alone, she waited.

                                  • The theme of the day was black. Black like the funeral of her freedom. Her style was usually rather preppy; dresses, bows, cardigans, blazers, and heeled oxfords or short boots. However, caught in a flurry of emotion a few hours before her flight, she exchanged her usual ensemble of lace and ribbons for a very uncharacteristic and rather rebellious choice of clothes given the slogan that was printed on her hat and the length of her shorts. She was starting to regret it a little but now she had to live with it.

Henrietta was bitter. Here she was. Stuck on a plane. For almost half a day. Going to an occasion she didn't even want to go to. And she was placed in the aisle seat in the middle block of seats with people behind her, in front of her and beside her. Just great. She loved people. Cursing her predicament, she leaned back, put her earphones in and opened up her shiny new biology textbook. It was all in Japanese. Who would've guessed that all the Japanese lessons, visits to sushi bars and celebrations of Japanese holidays would lead to this? She even had to quit her part time job and transfer her credits to a university in Japan. Just thinking about it got her blood boiling and she slammed the book shut with a huff. Turning to her side, she curled up, deciding that it was time for some shut-eye. At least she wasn't paying for this trip and there weren't any crying babies or children throwing tantrums. Yet.

                                    - - - T I M E S K I P - - -

Unfortunately, the plane did not explode or have any reason to turn back, as Henri had hoped, and she landed safely in Japan. Walking out of the arrival gate, a woman in a business suit holding up a sign which read "HENRIETTA KINGSTON" in large, bold Arial font was there to greet her. Taking off her jacket, the person in question almost scoffed at the sight but controlled her expression and pretended not to notice. Henri started to feel a little anxious at the sight signs around her in Japanese as reality sunk in. England was a plane flight away but it felt like she was leaving her everything behind. Perhaps she could dye her hair, live under the name Enri Ouno-san and open up one of those petting zoo café hybrids. Were fox café's a thing yet? As if in a trance, her measured steps turned into strides. But it wasn’t meant to be as she was reminded that she had promised her parents that she'd at least show her face to this first meeting when she felt her arm being grabbed from behind.
"Excuse me, Miss Kingston? Are you Miss Henrietta Kingston? " She looked up at the woman in business attire from behind her sunglasses. "No s**t, Sherlock." She obviously knew who she was. It wasn't like there was any other white haired chick with red eyes around. Even if it was Japan, they were at the airport, not Akihabara. Henri swallowed back the urge to make voice her snarky thought. She was only doing her job and asking out of courtesy. Taking a deep breath, she resigned herself to her fate and gave a somewhat strained smile.
"Would you have believed me if I said no?" The older woman chuckled at the comment.
I’m afraid not, Miss Kingston. Well, I'm here to take you to the Sohma Estate."
"Who could've known. Please, lead the way."

                                    - - - T I M E S K I P - - -

With her driver trying to make small talk for the entire journey, the car ride was more mentally draining than the entire plane trip. But luckily it didn't take too long to arrive at the Sohma Estate. Getting out of the car, Henrietta thanked the driver before her luggage was taken by one maid and she was led inside by another. Walking silently a little behind the maid, her throat was dry. She was really here. If the rest of her relatives weren’t coming, she would’ve loved to make a lasting first impression on her fiancé-to-be that would hopefully have called off the whole arrangement. Devout religious chick who ends every sentence with “Amen” and tries to convert everyone she sees? Or weaboo otaku who’s so hyper that she seems like she’s always high on drugs? Or perhaps a mad woman who speaks only in "fox"? Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow! Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow! The thought of it was enough to make her giggle as the maid leading her in stole a judging glance at her.

As she entered the banquet hall, her eyes scanned the room and noting the number of people, she wondered if she was early. Upon spotting Annabelle, Alexander and Andy, she gave the three a small smile and nod. As glad as she was to see them, she was suffering from a light case of jet-lag and sleep deprivation and wasn't exactly in the mood for conversation. So, she found herself a chair at the side of the hall. Folding her arms and crossing her legs, she observed the three Sohmas were present. One was being checked out by Alexander and her presence brought some relief to the Gemini as it meant that she was not the only female wearing pants. One was probably the Horse, judging by her accessories, and also seemed to be observing people. And the sole male Sohma who was also away from the group and seemed to have little interest in today's gathering. With nothing better to do, Henrietta leaned back into the chair and wondered when she could get some food.

                                        xxxOH OH WON T SOMEBODY SHOWME THAT I'M NOT A L O N E !?

                                      • Sitting in silence, Henrietta contemplated her future. It wasn't as if she could go full on bat-s**t crazy and threaten to break every antique in the estate if they didn't call the arrangement off. For the moment, her plan was to firstly find out what her fellow Kingstons thought of the whole arrangement so that she could gather a group of people who could hopefully talk some sense into the elders. Her back up plan was to be temporarily engaged to or at least befriend a Sohma who also wasn't quite ready to be engaged to some stranger and try to rally them into breaking the arrangement off. But how she was going to find this guy was beyond her. Socialising was not her strong point and being around people she didn't know well tired her out mentally.

As she sighed over her thoughts, a brown haired Sohma man entered and started striking up a conversation with Annabelle. He gave her the impression that he was "alright" given the way he was introducing himself to her and his attire. Likewise, the blonde Sohma who was standing away from everyone also was "alright". They seemed like decent guys she'd happily give her relatives off to. But based on what they were doing, the latter looked like one whom she could probably reason with more. But was she going to talk to him of her own accord? Hah. Not today.

Eyes wandering from face to face, Henrietta spotted another familiar face as Leanna entered the hall. However, still feeling a little fatigued from her car trip, she simply returned the greeting nod instead of going over to chat. Shortly after, a blonde haired man who, despite his foreign looks, was definitely a Sohma as Henrietta who was acquainted with all her relatives had no idea who he was as he entered the room. She watched as he went around greeting all his relatives, ruby eyes noting his jade pendant. "Ah, the dog. No wonder he's so…energetic."

Though she was enjoying her solitude, she wished that she could be doing something more productive with her time, like going to Kobe and sampling some of their famous beef. Henrietta looked down at her hands and sighed when a motion at the corner of her eye caught her attention. Looking up, it took every last bit of self-restraint for her not to scowl at the sight. "Is…he…waving... at me? Oh God- NoNoNoNoNoNoNoNo. GOD DAMMIT! DON'T SIT NEXT TO ME!!" her thoughts screamed out as the Dog took a seat next to her. Automatically her lips curled into a smile, a conditioned reaction that she had formed in school to ward off unwanted attention or worry, but her eyes were like that of a dead fish. Hollow, empty and filled with regret."Why was I caught?" She knew she should've just kept a pleasant face as she walked in. But it was too late to do anything about it now.

His cheerful introduction sounded more American and fluent than she thought (and hoped) he would. Henrietta tried not to look disappointed as her chances of pretending that she couldn't communicate with any of them because she couldn't speak Japanese evaporated. She laughed languidly at his comment, feigning amusement as much as she could.
"My body has a very efficient cooling system. My icy cold heart. Oh, I'm fine. But perhaps you should be asking them that question." Her hand casually motioned at the two other Sohma men in the room before she responded to his next question.
"Henrietta. But please, call me Henri. After all, we might be in-laws soon. Because there's no way I'm getting married to you or any of your rellies anytime soon." Soon after the words left her mouth, her attention was drawn to the pink haired Sohma lady who had just arrived. She was also in casual clothes with a purse that matched the blonde Sohma lady's and walked right over to the food table. Making a mental note of where much needed sustenance could be found, she returned a nod at Elliot's greeting before turning her attention back to Hikaru. Henrietta realised that this was her chance to find out more. And she was not going to let it slip away.
"Well, people really are starting to gather, aren't they...There're no points for guessing how I'm feeling about this whole fiasco thing. But how about you? And what do your relatives think of it?
                                        "

                                      • Her throat felt even dryer upon noticing the eagerness in his eyes as he listened to her. However, she did feel a little tension go away as he praised her name. It was nice to hear, after all, it was the name her parents gave her. However, what tension had been released immediately returned two-fold with the speed of a runaway Shinkansen as Henrietta flinched, her new acquaintance reaching over to give her cap a tap. Whilst the action certainly woke her up and punched away any tiredness in her system, she was so so close to biting off his fingers but didn't want to risk changing into a fox. Suppressing the urge to do so, her thoughts filled with curses so rancid someone would’ve thought she was a street gang member if she verbalised them.

Despite feeling like bolting away with some lame excuse like “I need the bathroom”, Henrietta nodded slowly as she listened to Hikaru’s opinion. It certainly was interesting to hear someone put such a positive spin on the situation, even if she didn't agree with it.

Then, finally, the words that she had been dying to hear came out of his mouth and her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm that hadn’t been seen since she left London.
                                        Food sounds amazing.
With lightning fast speed, Henrietta piled appetizers onto her plate until it was high like a mountain, her hand trembled just a little from its weight. It was almost unbelievable how high she has stacked her plate and it earned her a few judgemental stares of some of the Sohma elders from the sidelines. "Fear me old foggies! This is only my first course! AH HA HA HA!" Indeed, attracting attention wasn't usually something she sought out, but this time it filled her with some sort of satisfaction.

Returning her attention to her most gracious host, Henrietta tuned in just in time to witness Hikaru glomping the pink-haired Sohma lady. “My, this is just what I was in the mood for. A happy family reunion and …More people. Oh. Yay.” Chewing on some sashimi with a completely neutral expression, Henrietta blinked at the rather affectionate gesture. Weren’t they supposed to be conservative in Japan? They looked close, to say the least. Mother and son? Brother and sister? Or perhaps even something more intimate? Henrietta couldn't quite put a finger on it, but if it was, it'd make life so much easier.

Who the hell is your new friend?!?” she thought as he introduced her to a ‘Nanami Sohma’ who, for a brief moment, seemed to be stare at her with some sort of intent which she could not quite decipher before stammering out a “Hello”.
Henri tried not to raise an eyebrow at Nanami’s statement. Being a failure at English was a far stretch from failing at life. After all, it was just one language out of many. But understanding that her new acquaintance was nervous and feeling a little more energised after some food, she tried to be encouraging.
Your English is very good if it was your worst subject in school. Speaking it more is the only way you'll get better! It’s a pleasure to meet you, Nana!”Henrietta placed her fork on the edge her plate and returned the handshake. “And now what…” Attending to two Sohmas at once was slightly mentally draining and she guessed that with all the potential questions they might have for her that she’d never get the chance to move onto her second course if she continued to stay with them on her lonesome.

Well, since you’ve introduced someone to me, I guess I should introduce one of my own. Uh-um, let’s see…” Henrietta never thought she'd live to see the day she would be introducing people to other people but, unexpectedly, it had come. The Gemini looked around in time to see Bastian being ditched by the blonde Horse Sohma. It honestly was a little funny, seeing her scamper away from him so quickly and to Lacie.
Bastian! How have you been?” she greeted him with a rather awkward pat-hug which barely lasted 3 seconds. Honestly, she was so relieved that he was free but broke off the hug so she could quickly introduce the Sohmas and get back to food. Whirling back around, she faced the Sohmas who she had led over with a smile.
Hikaru, Nanami, this is Bastian Kingston. Bastian, this is Hikaru and Nanami Sohma. They are our future in-laws. They're…really …nice people and so eager to get to know us better." Placing another forkful of creamy potato pasta salad into her mouth as she finished her sentence. Having a fellow Kingston around, Henrietta felt more at ease, after all, she didn’t have to talk as much and could just enjoy listening to the conversation.

                                        xxxOH OH WON T SOMEBODY SHOWME THAT I'M NOT A L O N E !?

                                      • Henrietta laughed half-heartedly at Bastian's comment, throwing a mild glare at him as he nudged her with his arm. Yes, even if he meant it as a joke she agreed that she was cute but if it meant that people would be flocking over to talk to her, then she'd rather not have been. The petite girl turned her attention back to her plate as Bastian made his introduction.

Hearing her name, her red eyes flickered up. Friends? For even suggesting that they were in such a relationship, Henrietta wanted to either laugh in his face and enlighten her new “friends” with the shocking revelation that friends could not be made after just 5 minutes, or smack him so hard he'd see their dumb ancestors who had gotten them cursed in the first place. But now that her mood had lifted, since she didn’t have to entertain the Sohmas and had gotten the chance to enjoy some local cuisines, she resisted doing either. Besides, she wasn't willing to completely destroy her public image. Yet. So she settled with giving him a moderate dig in the side with her elbow.

Returning to her meal, she watched as Bastian and Hikaru talked. Bastian was definitely the right person to have called over. The only person she could find, but nonetheless, the right one. She knew he liked interacting with people and was one of those really rare zodiacs who weren't phased by strangers.

The sound of rapidly approaching footsteps and a loud voice calling out for someone drew her attention away from the group.
"Pikaru? Who? Oh." Her question was soon answered a brunette whom she didn't know latched onto Hikaru with more zeal than the previous reunion. Henrietta's fingers tightened around the fork and the edge of her plate. Oh. Great. Another person. If not for the now half-empty plate in her hand, Henri would've politely excused herself for a second helping. At least she still had her "social shield" aka Bastian.

Forcing a smile, she looked the Tomoko/Momo who had just arrived up and down. This was the third time she had seen that bag. Blondie who ran from Bastian, Nana and Tomoko. Three. The Henrietta wondered if those bags were in vogue. Perhaps the ever fashion conscious Annabelle would like one.
"When did we become friends again? How can we be "friends" when we aren't familiar with each other!?!" Thinking about how she had conducted herself, the Boar was undoubtedly a curious, bubbly and "nice" kind of person who would want to include everyone in the conversation. The kind of person whom Henrietta would've liked…had she been a Kingston. But as she was on the other side, it would take some time before she'd ever call her a friend.

"I'm Henrietta, the Gemini." As soon as the last word rolled off her tongue, Henrietta ate the last bite off her plate. Handling one overenthusiastic Sohma was one thing, but now that there were two, she was out.
"I'm going to get more food. I'll see you all later." It was a half lie. She was going to get food but she wasn't going to return to the group once she had obtained said food.
"They're all yours. Have fun." Henri gave Bastian a knowing look and a pat on his arm as she made a swift exit to the food table. She was finally free. She hadn't felt so relieved since finishing her last university exam and even skipped a little as she approached the table.

Standing by the array of different dishes, Henri wondered what action would lead to the least amount of human interaction. Should she just pretend to stack her plate until everyone gathered and then make a quick getaway? Should she stack her food up so high that no one can see her face when she's walking around with it? Or should she wolf down food as if she were a castaway who had just returned to civilization and hope that that no one would start another conversation with her if they saw how she was acting? The Gemini sighed. She still had time to decide and so she started construction on her new food pyramid.

                                        • There were very few noises which Hisui could not stand; heavy metal, crying babies and this. The high pitched sound of a television who couldn’t find the channel you were looking for and resorted to screeching at you out of panic whilst showing you bars of black, white, cyan, magenta and yellow. The sound rang through the air followed by a dull thud before it continued to contribute to global noise pollution levels. Hisui groaned, sandwiching her head between two pillows in a vain attempt to muffle out the noise. She knew the cause of the noise but wasn’t incensed enough to get up to silence it. It was one of those "active" alarm clocks that forces you to get up by playing whatever annoying sound you've chosen for it to play and running around the place until you find the gosh darn thing. It was a present from her second eldest sister that she received the year before as a goodbye present before she headed off to university in Tokyo. As annoying as it was to wake up to "TIME TO MAKE SOME FRIENDS, YOU LITTLE RUTABAGA!" (said with all the love and affection in the world), it was rather endearing in a strange way and she missed it sometimes.

As “Toki” continued to shout its mechanical lungs out, Hisui decided that it was time to face reality and kicked away her covers. Fetching a clothes hanger, she laid on the floor, peering into the shadow under the bed as she used it to try to claw the little bugger out. She scrunched up her nose and grumbled a few insults at it whilst making a few futile swipes at the clock under her bed. She could just picture her sister's smug looking troll-face in her mind as she continued her attempts to retrieve “Toki”. Finally, after 5 minutes, Hisui heaved a sigh as she placed the clock down back by her bed side table. A few minutes more of that noise and she would've slammed it down in frustration, possibly breaking it or her hand in the process.

🎶 A cold splash of water later and the girl was now most definitely awake. Patting her face dry with a towel, she studied her own reflection in the mirror. Her eyes drifted over to the small 8 shaped case where her contacts lived. No, she didn’t quite feel like spending 10 minutes trying not to poke her eyes out today. After donning her glasses, she gave her hair just enough brushes to get all the tangles out before slipping her uniform on.

Downstairs, both her parents were sitting at the dining table with some oddly coloured muffins on a cooling rack in the middle. As her father’s veterinary clinic was only a few streets away, he often left after Hisui had gone to school.
"Good morning, Hii-chan.” They greeted her almost in unison as she returned the “good morning”, taking a seat at the table.
Hii-chan, have some of these matcha-banana muffins. I was wondering if I should make them for the café.
Matcha-banana muffins. Hisui stared at them for a couple of seconds unsure of what to make of them before grabbing one and taking a tentative bite. The bitter and distinct flavour of matcha combined with the fruity sweetness of the banana was something she couldn't quite get her head around. Even with a couple more bites, she couldn't tell whether she liked or disliked it. The girl wondered if this was what adults called an “acquired taste”.
"They're…interesting. I think you should make them a limited edition addition to the menu." she smiled, stuffing the rest of the baked treat into her mouth. As she chewed, her mum handed her a furoshiki-wrapped bento box which Hisui promptly deposited into her bag. Checking her watch, it was about time to leave and she headed for the door.
"Ittekimasu!" She waved at her parents from the front door with one hand as she put her shoe on with the other.
                                          "Itterasshai!"

Hisui’s route to school was often longer than most others. She’d often take the side streets and alleyways, to avoid the main streets where the chance of meeting her classmates en route to school was greater. Changing the path to school once in a while also helped to wipe away the boredom of everyday routine. Fast forward a couple of minutes and the school entrance where all the shoe lockers were was in sight. The entrance was always busiest part of the school at this time. So people. Very crowd. Much no. Though she would have no trouble slipping over the back wall and sneaking past the crowd to her classroom, Hisui had shoes to change and there was no chance of her lugging around her loafers around until lunch. Fortunately, she had her lucky item of the day with her, her earphones. Swiftly equipping her "armour" that's the universal signal for "don't talk to me, I can't hear you”, she pressed on forward.

It wasn’t long before she sighted a few familiar faces and heard the very loud voice of the ever cheerful Harada-senpai.
"For the love of everything deep fried and crunchy, please don’t notice me, senpai." As far as she could tell, Harada-senpai was a nice person. But Hisui never held herself out to be a good judge of character and opted for staying away as far as she could from her. Luckily for her, Harada-senpai was preoccupied with greeting someone else. Nevertheless, Hisui was taking no chances and so, after swapping her shoes as quickly as she could, she hastily made her getaway.

Successfully escaping unnoticed, Hisui made her way to class.

                                          • Raising her arms to the sky, Fortuna stretched, breathing in the fresh air around her. Yesterday, as if by magic, she and her brother suddenly appeared in the world. With just a name for herself and her brother, she was without purpose and still was. But she couldn't care less. There was just something unmistakably and indescribably good about feeling, being alive. She turned around and took in the view of the farmhouse once again, admiring it as if it were her own. As far as she was aware, it was the most exquisite piece of architecture that existed, albeit the only piece of architecture she had seen so far.

Feeling the gaze of her other half, she turned to him and returned a toothy grin. Having learned that twin arma were rare was the next best thing she had discovered after strawberry jam which currently was her favourite food. Firstly, that meant that there were others like them who hopefully could teach how to be a good arma. Secondly, it meant that they were more special than them. But what meaning did this specialness hold? Did their rarity make them the born rulers over all arma? Did it mean that they possessed some special quality? Perhaps they were just considered “special” for being born this way. In any case, it was just absolutely peachy. And on the topic of peaches, the old lady had told her during breakfast that she was going to be making a peach cobbler for afternoon tea and Fortuna was very much looking forward to trying some later. Whatever peaches were.

Engrossed in her own thoughts, she was brought back to reality by the voice of her brother.
I am!” She absentmindedly answered, her eyes started to focus on her surroundings once more to see him slowly moving away before taking off ahead.
"Ah! Wha- Timeus! No fair!" She called as she ran after him, her comparatively shorter legs swung back and forth as she tried to close the distance between them. Despite being his twin, she was somehow not as tall as he was and also possessed less stamina. The young arma slowed slightly faster than her twin, her chest heaving as she took deep breaths as her stamina was very much lacking. Her run became a casual saunter as her twin stopped running and Fortuna took the opportunity to catch her breath as she made her way over to him. Seeing Timeus adjust his fringe, she too gave her own a few pats. Despite knowing the dangers of exposing her lapis, she felt that it was a shame to keep it hidden as it was so pretty.

"Yeeeeees, Ti-me-us? " Fortuna replied in a similar sing-song tune as she turned to him. Cocking her head to the side, she used all the cells in her brain that she could muster to ponder his question. Whilst she had listened to the old couple's warning about raptors, at the moment they seemed like mythical or imaginary creatures that were made up. After all, they had already survived for so long without seeing one. As far as she was concerned, the world was their oyster. Whatever oysters were.

"I think we should go… ” She started to say as she spun around on her toes. There was nothing much else she could see around them but more grass and the silhouette of what seemed to be a cluster of squares and rectangles up on the horizon.
"…Where there're more people! Lots of people! Maybe they can tell us more about this world! Maybe over there!” Stretching out her arm she pointed at the horizon. The young arma wondered what lied ahead and endless possibilities whirled through her head. Perhaps they’d make some new friends? Perhaps they’d even meet other arma? Or maybe even find their “lexar”? Having regained her energy, Fortuna charged forward towards the silhouette without saying another word.

Soon, she found what she had been looking for. More people, many of whom seemed to be rather excited about something as they gathered and entered a large structure set in the middle of the city. Amongst the crowd, Fortuna just stood there starstruck as she took in the sights.
"Wow! Look at all the people! I wonder what they’re so- Timeus? ” She whirled around but her twin was nowhere in sight. A chill of fear struck her. She had never left his side since her existence and had never contemplated it until now. The apprehension she felt was soon replaced by the excitement that bubbled up inside her as she contemplated new found freedom. Even though they were twins, they were two separate people and they were twins, she'd have no problem finding him later, right?

                                            • Slightly stooped over, tresses of soft strawberry blonde hair fell over her shoulders as her eyes remained trained on the same bottle of shampoo as they had been for the past 5 minutes and 43 seconds.
"What's that nee-san doing, mum?" a young boy asked, pointing at her as his mother hurriedly lowered his hand and shooed him away. Yuzuki remained motionless, a vacant smile plastered on her face out of habit. Usually, she was much more chipper but just a few hours ago she had woken up from a nap and a few hours before that she had been on night shift, rushing around the wards and making sure people weren't dying on her. Yuzuki felt a strange hazy but calm feeling within her as she drifted between reminiscing and zoning out.

                                              Everything was a mistake.

She had been given night shifts for her practicals last year and it was just her luck that there had to be a 6 hour emergency procedure which ran into early morning on the day of her exams. She failed them by 0.5 of a mark and was told that she had to repeat a year. Her few friends encouraged her to drink away her sorrows and in her bleariness, she brought a box of hair dye instead of a jar of hydrating hair mask whilst impulse shopping. The result? Strawberry blonde. "Just like that chick on the shampoo bottle…What a coincidence!" Yuzuki thought to herself. The more she stared, the more familiar the model looked and she leaned closer to get a better look. It was just her own reflection back at her from the bottle's shiny plasticky surface.
"Pft, ah ha ha ha!" her sudden laughter drew sideways glances from nearby shoppers. "At least I can sleep in tomorrow."

Stepping away from the shelf, she thought hard. What was she doing here again? She had run out of something but couldn’t quite remember what it was. But one thing was certain - it wasn't shampoo. She already had 9 bottles of opened shampoo from various brands back in her apartment. Yuzuki wasn't exactly mad about hair care. They were all impulse purchases much like the one she was about to make. With a plunk, the shampoo she had been staring at hit the bottom of her trolley.

After making several rounds around the supermarket and unsuccessfully failing to remember what it was she wanted to buy, the friendly ding, dong, dang of the supermarket announcement system filled the air.
"Attention all valued customers, we will now be starting our limited time half-price sale of organic free-range eggs from Kyushu at the front end of Aisle 5! Be sure to hurry! Stock is LIMITED!"
"Ailse 5…That's not too far from here!" Clutching her trolley’s handle, Yuzuki sped away to avoid the incoming stampede of housewives who were rushing over to get the discounted. She looked back at the mob she barely managed to avoid and felt a sense of relief, all the while forgetting that she was still pushing the trolley at breakneck speed until it crashed into the young man standing right in its path. Yuzuki let out a noise that was a hybrid between a gasp and a squeak, a gueak. She was most definitely awake now. Despite having saved at least 5 people who were seconds from death, her composure slipped away as fast as the discounted eggs were being sold as she realised that she had just caused an incident.

"I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry!" Her apologies were accompanied by rapid fire 90-degree bows. White hair and a face mask meant he could only be one thing. "It's a real yankii! And I just broke his rib! What if his lung or liver got punctured? What do I do!?!" The only thing stopping her from dropping down on her knees into a full dogeza was the fact that she too had light hair and that in her opinion meant that she was probably a 2.5 out of 10 on the gangsta-ness scale whilst the dude she had just crashed into was probably a 6.5 to a 7.

Feeling the presence of another person, she halted her bowing to turn to her side. Yuzuki's first thought was that there really were people who looked perfect without filters or Photoshop. Her second was that she was an 8.75. She gueaked again. At this point, whatever rationality was left in her had evaporated and sent her imagination into over drive. "He's got a wife! They probably eloped and have gone through years of hardship just to be together and I've just made her a widow! They've probably got two kids, a dog, a mortgage and a loan on their motorcycle! Now, I've just taken away their father! What on earth have I done!?!"
"I-I’m so, so sorry! I'll pay for the hospital fees, a-and the motorcycle! I- I’m sorry but I can’t pay you any more than that! Please don't sue me!"

                                            • Still in a state of minor panic, the young man's first few words flew through her however, she returned to reality at the mind blowing revelation that he in fact did not own a motorcycle. "EH!?! Aren't all yankiis supposed to have motorcycles?!? Ah! How rude of me! Perhaps he's too poor to afford a motorcycle…Perhaps they had to sell it to afford the house…" she thought to herself.

But just before she could start bowing in apology again, the young man pulled his mask down. Yuzuki didn't know what she had been expecting but he had a nicer face than she had anticipated and she had to stop herself from gawking at him. But not a second sooner, she could feel all the blood drain from her face as she tensed up at his next words. "Perhaps I should start drafting my will… Or take out an insurance policy…They say it’s never too early to have one…"

Before she could start to apologise again, the elegant lady whom the “yankii” had called Reina spoke up. Just like a puppy who had just been forgiven for chewing up a shoe, her expression immediately brightened into a smile at Reina’s words.
"Oh! Thank you very much! Reina-sama!" she gushed. "Uwahh! So perfect people do exist! She's also got a wonderful personality! I wonder why she’s with that guy. He’s pretty good looking, but his personality is… Maybe he’s just crabby because he’s sick. Who am I to be assuming things? Ah, well, if they're happy that's all that matters!"

The petite girl smiled sheepishly as she shuffled her feet, her eyes shifted from one person to the other. She had no idea what to do next. She had apologised already and not knowing who these two people were, she couldn’t think of anything more to say.
"Uh, um, er, well, I'll be going now! S-sorry for interrupting your date!!" with that said, Yuzuki clutched the handle of her trolley and sped away as quickly as she had sped into them.

The blonde contemplated her next actions once the pair were out of sight. An epiphany hit her like how that one basketball came out of nowhere and smacked her in the face in 5th grade. Soy sauce! That was what she wanted to buy. It was a household essential that she had been putting off buying out of pure forgetfulness. Gripping the trolley handle, Yuzuki debated whether or not she really needed it as she would have to walk past the aisle where those two were to get to the sauces aisle and she felt that it would be rather awkward to be coincidentally seeing them again, especially after what had just happened. With a laboured sigh, she paid for whatever was in her trolley and left the supermarket.

Yuzuki turned her head to the sky as she wondered what god she had angered as she started making her way home, just to walk right into a street light. Rubbing her forehead as she continued on her way, she suddenly stopped in her tracks. What caught her attention the "LUCKY MANEKI-NEKO -spring edition-" poster plastered to one of the gashapon machines outside a convenience store. The promise of one out of a variety of chubby lucky cat key chains would’ve been enough to make her to spend a couple hundred yen but it was the rare golden maneki neko holding a sakura blossom that had entranced her as it had the words “super lucky” next to its picture. After today’s events, she felt that she was greatly in need of some luck and before long, the blonde had shoved 1000 yen down the machine and obtained five gashapon capsules – three pink and two black. Taking a glance at her coin purse, it wasn’t like she was going to run out of coins any time soon and she had only bought five so far with three being duplicates. Not seeing the harm of trying again, she took another coin out and slotted it into the machine.
