A perfect precursor for the Ranta Festival, it was a beautiful summer's day outside to most people. A sweltering 29 degrees, it was probably a great to head to the beach if you didn't have work. But inside a small house in Hachi, it was a very cool 20 degrees thanks to the super powerful Mujitsu air conditioner that had been installed right in the middle of the last summer. In fact, this little house had been cooled to a comfy 20 degrees since the middle of the third week of Spring. Standing by her drawn windows, the Grinch of summer peeped out through a small gap between the curtains, her sunglasses slipping ever so slightly down the bridge of her nose.
"Summer. " she spat out with distain as she took another bite out of her refrigerator chilled pear. Chewing on it with a look of spite as if it had just insulted the very fibre of her being, she continued gazing out into the street as if she owned the whole place. Yue had nothing better to do. She was bored out of her mind but if she went onto the street, she'd have to do what she's usually paid to do, deal with people. And why would she want to do that for free? Scrunching up her nose at the thought of it, she took one last bite out of her pear. A small translucent square formed around the pear's core and in a split second it found itself in her kitchen's bin.
Of all days, the Ranta Festival had to be held on a work day. A money making day. Yue felt rather conflicted between her love of enjoying festivities and her love of money. Yue hoped that preparations for the Ranta Festival would go smoothly, but at the same time if everyone was healthy and safe then her clinic would be out of business. A blink and she was in her kitchen. Finishing that pear had somehow made her hungrier. She opened her fridge and absentmindedly stared at its contents until it started beeping at her.
“Stupid thing.” Yue grumbled as she slammed the fridge door close, its cushy plastic rims not allowing her to hear a satisfying slam as it shut. Moving to her cupboard, she opened it to once again stare. There was nothing in there that she could eat without putting in some effort and the finishing the pear had somehow had made her even hungrier.
“Guess, it’s time to go grocery shopping…But, lunch first. I guess.” With a huff, she grabbed her parasol and left the comfort of her air-conditioned house, stepping out into the heat. It reminded her of that one world where she had to fight off those bird-men. At least it was (relatively) peaceful here. She winced. Why was she doing things the hard way again?
Blink. She was at the front of the Bakery. Words can't describe how much she loved the smells which came out from the Bakery. Apart from her office and her home, the Bakery was probably her favourite place on Yatashki. She took deep breaths of the fragrance of freshly baked goods, the smell immediately lifting her mood.
Her eyes slowly shifted to her left to look at the person standing next to her. Rosinante Blanche. Rose was one of those few people she somehow didn't instinctively dislike. Perhaps it was because was wasn't really a person per se, but an alicorn.
"Oh, hello Rose! Fancy seeing you here. What're you going to get? " Small talk wasn't exactly her forte as Yue often avoided it when she could. But, Rose was a friend and so Yue couldn't pass up the chance to catch up with her.
"Have you had a busy day today? How’s business at the Pet Shop? " The moon rabbit scanned the various delectables on display and licked her lips. As much as she'd love to get some macarons or some profiteroles, she felt like something slightly more substantial would be more worth her money. Perhaps a cream bun. Or maybe a slice of cake? Cake was quite filling. But what kind of cake? As she searched the shelves for her cake of destiny, her eyes fell on something on the shelf below, pain au chocolat. Pain au chocolats were also filling. But so were custard cornets. And Danish pastries. And caramel slices. And...Oh, the number of choices was just about to driver her insane. A good kind of insane. Snapping out of her reverie, she decided that she needed some help.
"What do you think I should get, Rose? I can't decide…" she looked up at the alicorn pleadingly. If it were left up to her, she'd be standing here until the Ranta Festival was over.
