Why would it matter if I'm American? I don't know it just sounds weird that way.

If I draw in the "manga" style then it wouldn't be "manga" at all? Would the same rules apply if a Japanese-American created a manga? What about if someone Japanese created an American style comic would it be considered manga and not a like an actual comic?

I'm not trying to sound pushy or anything but its just I was able to come up with questions I never thought of asking before.

Anyway I'm getting offtopic. If anyone else has any answers to my previous questions at the beginning let me know.

i dont think it matters if your american or japanese. anyone can make mangas so i support you. I personally look for something like gravitation dj. you can read it on mangafox though its a little too "detailed" on what they're doin. Well, good luck xp

Ah I'm glad I'm getting responses still. They usually stop after a day or two.

Anyways thank you for all the other people who gave me recent advice in this thread. Its good to know there are others with answers out there. Whether they are things I agree with or not I still find them helpful. 3nodding

I'm going to figure out my story line first before doing anything else. I'll be looking at BL manga to get an idea of what I should do.
No.

Don't.

That's the worst thing you could do. BL manga is exploitative, pinkface bullshit which imposes heteronormative stereotypes on gay couples.

Read some actual books. Talk to queer friends you have. Watch movies. Read up biographies of queer people -- or even better, autobiographies. Don't get your plots from straight girls' fantasies of what gay men are like.
You should read BL mangas for an idea of what you SHOULDN'T do. I agree whole-heartedly with Zee. BL mangas are about as accurate as lesbian softcore pornos when it comes to accurately and respectfully describing homosexual relationships.

Hmmm. I guess so. Like I said before I don't plan on making painfully exaggerated stereotypes of a gay couple. I realize they act normal like regular people. And I don't think it would hurt to look at some BL manga but looking at some actual books wouldn't hurt either. Not all BL manga is "pinkfaced bullshit" though.
Pinkface. Like blackface or yellowface, but with gay people. Think Will & Grace.

And yes, the majority of BL manga is terrible. I've yet to see one that didn't use the completely ******** up uku/seme dynamic/classification/bullshit.
As far as Japan not wanting or liking foreigners, I'll just leave this link over here.

Furthermore, you should know that actual Japanese mangaka make very little money and most of them have day jobs. You really are better off publishing in America, and either way you definitely should be doing this primarily for your own enjoyment, not with the expectation of it bringing you any money.

Do a webcomic, see how that goes. That's what I recommend.

dont think thats the point of BL.
Well, excuse me from trying to discourage young writers from deliberately setting out to write formulaic wankbait.

BL Manga is, by definition, the most horrific stereotypes you can get. It's not meant to be real.

Your best bet in writing genuine gay stories is to write genuine characters. And by that, I mean simply looking to your circle of friends, or folks you admire who are gay, and taking your inspiration from that.

If you look at BL Manga for "what to do" or "to get ideas" then you're just going to be doing the entire LGTB community a disservice by writing something that is a copy of how someone else THINKS gay men act like.

It'd be like saying, "I want to draw like da Vinci!" So you go out, find someone who drew a copy of a copy of the Mona Lisa, and drew from that. It means you're presenting your thoughts on how other people view the Mona Lisa, and all their faults and errors all in one fell swoop.
Writing a comic about gay men where your sole influence is BL manga is a bit like writing a comic about black men where your sole influence is race hate literature.
I keep hearing about all his BL stuff portraying homosexual men horribly, but I've never seen much of it myself...As someone who hopes to make comics featuring romances between men, can someone actually give some specifics about what stuff they actually do wrong in BL?
One of the guys is straight we swear but the gay guy pushes him up against a wall and the straight guy's heart throbs and they make out but he hates it and then they have sex but the straight guy doesn't want it but then he ends up liking it so it's ok.
