Welcome to the SOS Brigade!
The SOS Brigade (SOS団 (エス・オー・エスだん), Esuōesu dan?) is a club that Haruhi started shortly after entering high school. The club name is an acronym of "Sekai o Ōini Moriageru Tame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan" (世界を大いに盛り上げるための涼宮ハルヒの団, "Sekai o Ōini Moriageru Tame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan"?), which roughly translates into "Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade to Greatly Enliven the World". To retain the acronym, the official North American adaptation refers to the group as the "Spreading Excitement All Over the World with the Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade", whilst unofficial fan translations generally adopted the title "Save the World by Overloading it with Fun, Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade".

Haruhi initially conceived the club idea when Kyon lectured her about how meaningful inventions throughout history were created by geniuses: that technological advancements in the world were wrought by a limited number of lucky individuals. Inspired by this speech, Haruhi decides to create a club to address the woeful lack of aliens, time travelers and espers in her life.

The goal of the SOS Brigade is to "Bring More Excitement to the World" through finding aliens, time-travelers and espers and hanging out with them, according to Haruhi. The club's main contribution is a film intended for the High School cultural festival entitled The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina: Episode 00 starring Mikuru, Yuki, and Itsuki as the main characters. It was filmed and narrated by Kyon and directed by Haruhi. Kyon stayed up all night attempting to edit the footage into something coherent, but was only partially successful. The film's plot consists of a number of meta-fictional parodies of anime clichés.

The Members!

Haruhi Suzumiya:
The title character and leader of the SOS Brigade. Her energetic and eccentric character proves to be a driving force for the series.

Kyon:
A student with whom Haruhi willingly interacted, and is the only normal human in the group. Even though Haruhi is the title character, the story is told through his viewpoint. Through narration and dialogue, he provides his insight, perspective, and opinions on the series' events

Yuki Nagato:
A humanoid interface created by the Data Integration Thought Entity whose responsibility involves the monitoring of Haruhi and the investigation of the events three years prior to the present story. She possesses the ability to manipulate the surrounding environment as she sees fit. Also, she has the capability to access Closed Space.

Mikuru Asahina:
A time traveler from the future who is assigned to investigate the reason for the inability to travel to any point in time before three years prior to the present story

An esper who suddenly acquired his powers three years prior to the present story. Along with other espers, he uses his power to combat beings of energy within Closed Space.

Ryōko Asakura:
At first, Ryōko appears to be a compassionate and hard-working high school girl. One of Kyon's friends, Taniguchi, places her in the top three first-year girls in the school with a grade of A++: indicative of her pleasant personality, beauty, and athleticism. Her enormous popularity made her the unanimous choice for class president of Kyon's homeroom class. She also showed particular concern about how Haruhi had distanced herself from the rest of the class.
However, it turns out that she is Yuki's backup, and as such, is also another "humanoid interface". Much like Yuki, she finds it difficult to empathize with humans, but unlike Yuki, possesses exceptional social skills. Initially she cheerfully supports Kyon's reaching out to Haruhi, often encouraging him to "open her up to the class," making Haruhi easier to observe. However, she later decides to try and kill Kyon with a combat knife in the hopes of catalyzing an observable reaction from Haruhi. Her efforts are stopped, after Yuki defeated and removed her from the physical world. It's interesting to note that her cheerful personality doesn't falter, even at the moment of her own demise. Afterwards, Yuki fabricated a cover story that she moved to Canada. Ironically, the death/disappearance that provoked Haruhi's reaction in the end was Ryōko's own.

Tsuruya:
Born December 6, Tsuruya is the hyperactive friend of Mikuru (from the current time plane) notable for her loud voice, knee-length hair, and prominent tooth. She possesses a cheerful and friendly disposition. She is also prone to long fits of unrestrained and intense laughter at things she considers even the slightest bit humorous.
Her fang-like tooth gives her an idiosyncratic speech pattern, causing her to misspeak words by leaving out syllables, as seen in episode 9. Her speech pattern is often accompanied with a lisp and her catch phrases "megas" and "nyoro". She was named "honorary consultant of the SOS Brigade" by Haruhi. She is also the heir of the Tsuruya family, which purportedly collaborates with Itsuki's Agency. It is also unknown if Tsuruya has a secret identity or agenda.
Though not an actual member of the SOS Brigade, she does play a minor role in Mikuru Asahina's Adventure - Episode 00 and serves on their baseball team in episode four. She also has a small appearance in the ninth and twelfth episodes of the anime, but otherwise appears relatively sparingly throughout the anime. She appears a few more times during the novels, appearing more prominently than in the anime's rendition of the same stories, and even getting along very well with Haruhi. Kyon believes this is because both Haruhi and Tsuruya are nearly insane. Though she is not a brigade member, Tsuruya is still used as an extra body for some of the Brigade's activities.

Taniguchi:
Taniguchi (left) and Kunikida (right) are classmates and Kyon's friends. Taniguchi went to the same junior high school as Haruhi while Kunikida went to the same junior high school as Kyon. Like Tsuruya and Kyon's sister they act as fill-in members for the SOS Brigade whenever needed. Both of them played very small parts in Mikuru Asahina's Adventure - Episode 00, with neither having many lines to say. They are friends and are almost always seen together.
Taniguchi is comically lascivious; he gave a 'score' of attractiveness to each first-year girl based upon his tastes and preferences. He remembers the full names of everyone receiving an 'A' rank, with Ryōko receiving an AA+ and Nagato receiving an A-. As for Mikuru, her mere presence elicits an altered state of adoration for Taniguchi and Kunikida, especially when she was in her soba-serving costume. He also knew Haruhi from back in junior high, and was Kyon's original source of information on Haruhi before he started conversing with her. It is hinted that he may have been the person that dated Haruhi for the shortest amount of time. Kyon does not seem fond of Taniguchi. He seems to show annoyance with Taniguchi whenever he speaks his mind. He only hangs out with Taniguchi in the novels so as not to look like an outcast.

Kunikida:
Kunikida is much quieter than Taniguchi with the latter doing most of the talking when the two are around. Kunikida plays a minor role and does not contribute much dialogue. However since he and Kyon went to the same junior high school, he might know more about Kyon since he once stated that "Kyon likes weird girls," as evidence to support the idea that Kyon is romantically interested in Haruhi. His character is also shown to be smarter than his friends Taniguchi and Kyon, at one time explaining a difficult concept to Taniguchi. Kunikida is also included in certain SOS Brigade activities when there is a shortage of people, such as the baseball game and the movie The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina

Emiri Kimidori:
A soft-spoken, well-groomed second-year student with long, light green hair, Emiri first appears in "Mysterique Sign" seeking counsel from the SOS Brigade. Although she claims to be the girlfriend of the Computer Research Society president, Kyon later discovers that this is not the case, which leads him to suspect that Emiri is a Humanoid Interface like Yuki and Ryōko.

Haruhi Suzumiya clicked on the cheap little heater in the brigade room, letting her fingers dance over the front of it to capture some of it's warmth. She was somewhat pouting, a mixture of depression and thought all into one bundle as she kept quiet. Even in her winter uniform she was still cold, and even the heater was hardly doing anything for her. Maybe she'd send Kyon to get a new one in the days to come.

"We have to do something exciting," Haruhi muttered to herself mostly, and if the brigade happened to listen, well good for them. Winter break was steadily approaching and she was not wanting to spend it just sitting around like in the past. No, this break would have to be different. "Any suggestions?" She asked, still hogging the heat, back to the others in the room.

Kyon was walking down the hallways with his jacket on. It was winter so he needed something to keep him warm. He walked up to the brigade room.
Great another day of torture...
He thought to himself. On the other side of the door he heard talking.
I must be late...
He opened the door to find only haruhi sitting in front of the heater.

He was alone in the room, with Haruhi

When the door opened, Haruhi turned to look over and see who it was. Kyon. Her favorite chore boy, and yet always late co-founder of the birgade. She frowned right away turning the heater to face into the room more. "You're late," she said in her usual PMS like voice. "Go on, explain yourself," she said crossing her arms, waiting for some kind of good reason.

Kyon Crossed his arms and sighed.
"Had to stay after for math."
He said with a serious face.
"Though I don't know why you should care because no one else is here"
He said now walking over to the warm water and made some tea for himself. He then turned his head to look at Haruhi and said.
"You want some?"

"Just a little more...." she whispered to herself, on her tip toes, her hand stretched as far as it could go. Her eyes squinted as she lifted up her leg behind her body, hoping this would make her taller somehow. Biting her lip, she inhaled her breath, trying everything to reach her goal, which was to retreive a book from the shelf.
"A little more..." she whispered closing her eyes her arm getting tired of this. She had been at this for at least ten minutes. And what was even sadder, is that she was on a stool that reached up to the middle of her calf. Poor Mikuru, god didn't bless her with height, she was only 5 '' and it seemed like she was shrinking everyday.

She had already been in the room when Haruhi was there, but Kyon didn't notice her she supposed. That's alright. She was concentrated on her goal anyways.

Her uniform skirt riding up her thighs, almost showing her strawberry printed panties. Poor girl didn't realize this, she was too concentrated on her goal. Her school uniform showing off her petite waist she furrowed her brows slightly. Her hair flowing behind her, strands tickling her rose tinted cheeks. She hopped a little on the stool, trying to reach the book she desired.

Hearing Haruhi speak, she turned around biting her lip, she didn't know what to say. She was always a little scared of Haruhi she had to admit secretly. But it sure was chilly in the room today.

Hoping once again, she suddenly felt a shot of cold fear go through her as she felt the stool beneath her begin to loose it's balance. "N-No!!" she gasped, trying to hold onto something as she began to fall. Grasping books anything nearby, they fell along with her onto the floor. A yelp of pain escaped from her lips as she hit the ground, biting her lip in pain.

With a pile of books around her she sniffled softly. None of the books that fell with her were the ones she needed. GREAT.
Feeling embarrassed and stupid she tried to hide her stupidity, her hair in dissray due to the fall. Greattttt.

Seeing Kyon come in she couldn't help but smile "H-Hello Kyon-kun!" she spoke softly, trying to make it seem like she was okay.
Mikuru pushed the books next to the shelf, making room just in case people wanted to walk by. But that was highly doubtful right? She didn't want to inconvenience anyone, that was the last thing she wanted. She cared more about others than she did about herself. It was how she was taught and learned that way.
Sighing with defeat she stood up shakily, biting her lip in pain as she felt her hip twinge with pain. A new bruise to add to the collection.
Placing the stool back to it's position,she placed her body against the bookshelf, closing her eyes hoping no one noticed her act of stupidity. But with Haruhi in the room, that was quite doubtful.

Haruhi gave Kyon an annoyed look before turning her head so fast the other way her hair flew up before falling back down around her shoulders. Her hair was starting to grow out longer by now, and she figured she'd wait until someone commented before keeping it or chopping it off again.

"Hmph," she huffed as she looked back towards the large window, "no excuses, you were still late. Mikuru showed up and all you can do is say something stupid like 'I had to stay for math'?" She mocked him as she shook her head again moving around the computer chair to go closer to the glass.

She looked out almost dazed, and yet still very annoyed. "Anyway, I'll pass on the tea." She said in a more calm voice this time just watching a few late leaves fall from the trees. "Yuki and Koizumi are late also... I wonder if they got caught up in last minute class work too..." She barely mumbled that part, keeping it hidden to herself.

Kyon turned around to see Mikuru being a klutz as usual.
How did I miss not seeing Mikuru here? She is so cute when she is clumsy...Kyon who was dazed in his fantasy turned back to the tea and made another cup for Mikuru.
He then brought the cups over to the table.
"Here you go."
He said placing them down onto the table.
He then sat down in the chair he usually sat at.
He didn't know if Mikuru wanted tea but she always gives him tea so he thought he should be nice to her.
He took a sip of his hot tea and looked around the room and sighed.
Another lazy day.

Mikuru's heart stopped in her chest, her brows furrowing gently as she heard the voice. It was a males...and sounded familiar. Oh god. Oh no. Did he see her fall??

Flustered, she looked in his direction, "I..I'm sorry...." she whispered her thoughts out loud, her cheeks turning a dark red as she spoke. Her heart began to race, her hands trembling as she grasped onto the bookshelf for support. She hoped he didn't witness her fall. How embarrassing.

"W-what...?" she whispered taken back by his response, flustered she smiled towards him. Noticing the cup of tea on the table, she stared at the steam rising from it. She loved when tea did that. But then again..every hot liquid does that.
Walking slowly to the table she pulled out her chair slowly and sat down."Thank you..." she spoke flustered, placing her hands around the warm cup she smiled.

"Ah...." she heard Kyon speak about Math as he entered, she tilted her head gingerly and parted her coral lips "Are...are you doing well in class..?" she didn't mean to pry, but if he needed help she could try her best to aid him! Then....again...maybe not. With Haruhi that would be quite difficult.

Haruhi just listened to them chit chat. She felt a ping of jealousy go through her body but she ignored it. For some reason she really really hated it when Mikuru spoke to Kyon about, well, anything. She just told herself not to get too much into it. Kyon, like every other guy, only wanted Mikuru for her body. Or that's what Haruhi told herself on a daily basis at least.

She half lidded her eyes looking out at the school grounds. By now several students were scurrying away for the evening. Many of them, like Kyon, had been kept after classes due to the winter break steadily approaching. Haruhi actually did fairly well in school and was one of the lucky ones who got to leave on time.

She opened her mouth as if to say something, but only got frustrated when the words didn't come out. She shut her mouth again narrowing her eyes angrily. She kept her arms crossed but clenched her right hand into a fist either way. Everything was so...boring!

"Mikuru!" She called without turning to look at the red head. "Get changed, now! The purple maid one." She added as she whipped her head back around glowering at Kyon. "Kyon, get out!"

Kyon took another drink of tea.
"Your welcome."
Kyon said to Mikuru.
"Yeah I think I am doing well. But I am probably not the best in the class..."
He then took another drink, and then turned to Haruhi who was yelling at him to get out.
He sighed and said
"You usually don't care if I am here, but ok..."
He got up and walked out the door and walked across the hall and leaned against the wall.

Haruhi didn't make any comment to Kyon's last words before he left. Instead, she walked over to the small rack holding their costumes, taking the purple maid dress and throwing it on the table. "Here," she said going back to the computer taking out their brigade camera. "We're going to take more pictures for the website. We'll go outside so we can get some of you in the snow," she explained as though it was nothing.
