His breath came fast and ragged as he threaded his way over the ice, weaving between glaciers and sailing through tunnels. His heart hammered in his chest as he drew up short, listening. Silence pressed down, undisturbed by anything but him. He moved on, slowly and cautiously. The tower loomed overhead, glowing white. If he could only get inside-
He halted, his stomach tying itself into knots. Too late.
No sooner had the words entered his mind than the pain began. Fire laced its way through his veins, making him writhe and scream. Slowly, the world fell away and left him in darkness.
He woke with a scream on his lips. He clutched at his chest, breathing fast and ragged. His shirt was soaked through with sweat, making him itch. He pulled it off and flung it away as his breathing eased and heart slowed. Something wet oozed from the side of his mouth, and he dabbed at it with a finger. Light streamed through his thin curtains, lending to his sight as he gazed at his hand. Blood coated his finger. He had bitten his tongue. As pain set up in his mouth and muscles, he threw the covers aside and swung his legs over the side of the bed.
He could hear footsteps in the hallway. The other students were waking and going about their mornings. Sighing, he scooped up his toiletries and stepped out into the hallway.
