One is an implied description of a belief system, not dependant on any active participation. The other is an implied label as a follower.

As almost everybody in New York considers themselves to be a Christian, just like almost everybody in the United States, that would be a moot point. They either are or are not Christians as Christ would judge - this is not information to which anybody alive is privy.
