Why?
When you
Block/Ignore someone, several things happen:
- You can no longer see their posts
- They can no longer post in your threads
- They cannot PM you
- They cannot see when you are online
- They cannot comment on your Profile/Journal
- They cannot send you requests/invites
And you would think that would be enough.
However,
they can still see
you, and they can still
Quote you.
For many users, the
Notifications feature is a very useful tool. It means no longer having to follow threads to see if someone has responded to you. Unfortunately,
Trolls can
Abuse this function, and to excess. They can follow your post history, and continue to harass you by quoting you frequently. They can continue to create dozens of
Mule accounts so it doesn't matter when they get banned. You can continue to
Block those accounts but they can still get to you by quoting you repeatedly everywhere you post.
Blocking the little bastards is such an accomplished feeling
I have had people ask me, "Well, why can't you just have some self-control?" It's not really about that. It's about making sure the
Ignore function actually
works. The tool should just do what it is supposed to do, and when Gaia added the
Notifications, they simply left out this detail.
My ignorelist is long. VERY long.
And it's getting longer daily. Especially with all of those
mules. Unfortunately, they can still follow me around, quote me, and draw my attention to namedrop threads.
Some suggest that I simply turn off the
Notifications feature. I am definitely considering that and just keeping more tabs open during conversations. However, I still think this needs to be addressed, so that the feature can be used without this issue.
Bottom Line:
When I
Block you, I shouldn't have to
see you, at all. I should be entitled to pretending like you don't exist. That is what the
Ignore function is all about. I have been on other sites where the feature works completely making it basically impossible for that person to get through with the account you've blocked (so they will obsessively make more accounts, of course, but at least that is easier to handle).
The
Notifications feature already is integrated with your
Friendslist, so there's no reason it can't be integrated with data from your
Ignorelist as well. It would operate by similar principles but instead of notifying you of updates like it does for friends, it would just insure you never see any updates from that user, including notifications for quoting and other actions affecting you.
