Guitar and Bass: Practice and Progress

I started playing almost exactly a year ago. I take lessons once per week, but don't practice much. Never bothered to learn scales, theory, or... Any of the notes past the seventh fret. I generally read in tab (but I can read notation) and the hardest thing I can play... Er, I play loads of shtuff, but the hardest is probably Red Sector A by Rush. It is more difficult than it sounds.

I have been playing around on a bass three or four years but only properly started playing 6 months ago. I can play most green day songs on international superhits and American idiot, Quite a bit of the red hot chillies and some blink 182. Me and my friend learn the same songs so we can play together. I can read notation but hate playin scales.
