The minisquiddles are actually hybridized versions - a cross between a squirrel and something tinier and less furry.

Yes, that's it! A cross between a grape and a squirrel.

Apparently, the grape's genetic predilection toward not growing a tail was one of the many traits passed on.

(actually, I just sort of figured that, at such a small size, a tail might clutter the minisquiddles too much, and make them appear too nondescript. Usually, small graphics do best without excessive details.)
