My last name to my mother's last name.
Now, as for my first name, I don't know what to change it to.
I want something unique but not ghettoly unique. rolleyes
Something that'll fit me, something that is cute and easy to remember and say.
I was thinking Sailor but I do not know about that.
Any ideas on a first name?
Also, how do I go about this processes of legal name changing?

Wow, I did the same thing. I changed my last name from my father's to my mother's and got a new name that I felt was unique to my area/in general.

Anyway, you'll need to go to your local court house and talk to the clerks there to find out how to get the requisite forms. It would also help to call a few lawyers and ask if they do pro bono work or if they know anybody that does (reason being, you'll need to fill in legal forms in a very specific way, and the court clerks may refuse to tell you how to do that on the grounds that they aren't qualified or allowed to offer legal advice).

You should know that a name change can be a bit pricey; you'll need a copy of your birth certificate which you may have to pay for to be sent to you, and you'll also need to pay for a new I.D. card to be minted for you, and likewise you'll have to pay a court filing fee (and, depending on what the legal procedures are where you live, you may also need to visit your local newspaper's advertising office and pay to have your name change announced in the newspaper's adspace).

Once you've payed the fees, filed the forms, and have all your ducks in a row, it's just a matter of waiting to be notified by the court house of what day and time you'll need to come in to present your name change request to a judge (in my case, the clerks at the courthouse misplaced the return letter of confirmation they received from the newspaper's office, a fact which I wouldn't have known had I not actively asked the clerks for updates from time to time).

I hear changing names is hard though... at least thats what my mom acts like stare

The process is tedious and relatively costly, but it isn't hard by any means. I could answer any questions you may have about it, since I changed my own name legally some time ago.

This wasn't leveled at me, but, I'll nonetheless address it anyway, as people ask me that question a lot.

Mistaken Life
I don't really understand the purpose of changing your name?

In my case, I simply disliked my current name. It used to be Michael, and I've always liked the name Darrin better, so I changed it to that. Additionally, I've always felt that, since a person's name is something of theirs, they should have a say in what it's going to be.
I want to change my name to Harrison Danger X.

That way, people will ask me, "Mr. X, is it true that Danger is your middle name?"

And I'll stroke my beard and answer, "Yep."

You need to go sit in the woods for a week until you have a vision, and whatever you see will be your new name.

Even if you start picturing cheeseburgers from hunger and sitting in the sun all day.
Why does that remind me of when Peter Griffin went to the woods because of some Indian Casino whatnot? sweatdrop

Usually you have to go to the county courthouse clerk, pay a fee for them and put a notice in the newspaper that you are changing your name.
That's about what I do know <_<

Anyway, you'd need to narrow it down a bit. Is there a particular etymology you're looking for? Like a particular origin, or meaning?

And make sure your initials don't spell out something you don't like. Like F.A.T., P.M.S, and so on.
Also pick a name that fits the year you were born.

But, um... a suggestion...
Shayla?
Or any of it's other spellings?

Dapper Werewolf

You want a bunch of random people over the internet to name you?

Makes sense. Honestly its rare but I do come in counter with people where I'm like..."you don't really come off as a (current name) to me, I feel like you're more of a (name suggestion)". It's always an interesting experience because it tends to be met with agreement. I guess some parents just really pick the wrong name? I'm really not even sure how most parents even pick the right name though, its like they must briefly look into the future to see what our personality will fit. o_o

Well, describe your personality. Do you like any particular culture? Do you like long names or short names? Have any restrictions?

Way to just disgrace your parents by changing the name they thought long and hard about for you. What a slap in the face to them. emotion_facepalm

._.
Not everyone has parents that think long and hard about their kid's names. My mom and dad didn't even think about my older brother's name until he was born.
