- Devin shrugged off Elaina’s comment about going without. He had gone without plenty growing up too, television wasn’t an integral part of growing up. Although, honestly, he was certain the only person who would understand how he felt about Elaina’s room would be Iri. The differences between their two homes was drastic. Even with Iri having her abilities making things unsafe for them from time to time, their mother was always warm. For some reason, he felt like his whole childhood had happened during summer, all his memories were bright and warm. Even Christmas, but he didn’t linger on the idea for long. Elaina held out a book and he could help but grin from ear to ear. ”Anne Rice is my favorite author!” Despite all their differences, they did have some things in common. As he thumbed the pages of the loved book, his mind wandered to how ironic it was. He didn’t only follow The Vampire Chronicles by Rice, but other series as well. What was ironic was that not only had he read all of the Chronicles, but that he ended up becoming a vampire. Even more so, one of the people responsible for his clan being killed was a fan of the same series of books. The world felt small when looked at from that perspective, for now here they both stood, allies.
Elaina asked about how he felt and he nodded, still grinning but trying to hide it. He wasn’t numb or oblivious, she had totally been into that kiss. Silently breathing sigh of relief to himself, she hadn’t tried to kill him for his forward attempt. Which meant plenty more attempts were about to come. Jesse would be an issue at some point, but he was going to be an issue either way, what with him feeding of Elaina. Now Jesse would have two reason to hate or kill him. Or both. For some reason, Devin didn’t mind the thought. Sure, he had slept with different women from time to time, but ever since his turn he had never had a serious relationship. Not to mention, prior to his turn, what relationship could he have had that was serious? If it weren’t for the constant running and feeding, it was almost like he was trying to date Elaina. Hm. That’s not a bad idea. I should take her out some time. Devin was pulled out of planning what kind of date to take Nelphilm hunter on and instead nodded at her words. ”I don’t know if it’ll stop them from trying to kill us, but that way they can’t say they didn’t know?” He asked with a chuckle, not trying to be terribly concerned about his or Iri’s mortality.
Elaina escorted him back out to meet everyone and his brows furrowed. Where was Iri? The stern look didn’t leave his face when Iri appeared with Jesse. Had this dude just taken his little sister into his room? It was one thing for Elaina, she was a woman after all. Devin kept glaring at Jesse, wondering what he had been doing with Iri. When Elaina announced them, he kept the hard look on his face as he made sure to make eye contact with every hunter in the room. Possibly, if they had looked into his eyes, they would be less likely to kill him? He wasn’t sure, but it was good to know their faces too. He jabbed Iri in the ribs and whispered for her to look up.
Then some random guy approached Elaina and Devin didn’t like it one bit. Spar? He followed to where the mats were set out for their sparing and he couldn’t help but feel more weird about this place. As a child if he and Iri even wrestled it was discouraged. Then it dawned on him that he didn’t see Iri. Why hadn’t she followed? Looking around, he tried to see if Jesse was there and of course he wasn’t. It made Devin fuming mad, but he crossed his arms over his chest to watch Elaina get too close to this guy Ethan and his sternness vanished. She was in amazing shape and Ethan looked like a rag doll more than a man. The hooting and hollering was almost intoxicating and he couldn’t help but join in. Before he knew it, though, Ethan had had enough and she was calling out her next victim. Her eyes met his and he couldn’t help the goofy, toothy grin that spread across his face.
”Oh, you want a piece of me?” He teased. Devin worried for a moment how well his body would tolerate being in such close contact with hers. Energy flowed through him and it made him want so many things. The thought of the surrounding hunters, however, kept his fire at an embers level rather than a roaring blaze as it had been when it was just the two of them. Elaina seemed interested in sparing with him and so he agreed, knowing he could take her … Well, upon thinking on it some, he couldn’t turn down her invitation to spar, but losing to her in front of everyone would make him look weak. She was special, no average hunter, after all. Did everyone here know that? Elaina was thin, but very well built, he had spent the last years running, not training as she had.
Taking his jacket off, Devin smiled as he approached Elaina. Unlike Ethan, he was pulling every punch, he even tried to strike first, but had zero intention of hurting her. She, on the other hand, wasn’t going to let him get away with underestimating her. Back and forth they went until finally, she had him pinned to the ground, her face inches from his own. Hearing the murmur of judgment from the hunters, it was all he focused on to prevent himself from kissing her again. Before he knew it, though, alarms were sounding and people were shouting outside. A girl screamed and his blood ran cold… Well, if it could it would have, because he knew that scream belonged to his sister. Damn it! Elaina helped him to his feet and it was a mad scramble for weapons and everyone was exiting the building.
Devin, on the other hand, had no need for weapons, so he made a B-line for the door and began searching for his sister. When his eyes took in the sight, he rushed to her. Iri was covered in blood and shaking, holding a small weapon covered in blood. Her eyes were wide and he began scanning her. There didn’t seem to be any wounds on her, but his attention was soon diverted when she screamed again and he turned in time, grabbing a vampire by the throat and throwing it to the ground. He heard a satisfying crack and stood up, grabbing Jesse by the arm. ”I thought we were going to them, not them bring the fight here!” He wanted an explanation and didn’t care how made Jesse got.

- Iri had thought the color in her face would fade, but when Jesse mentioned getting her somewhere safe, it came right back. God, can I be any more transparent? At least he’s nice to me despite that… It wasn’t her fault she didn’t have a poker face. What need did she have to hide her feelings with Devin? He was rude and obnoxious and her brother. Jesse, on the other hand, probably could, like, read minds or something! Perhaps it was stupid to think so, but with her he didn’t have to. She knew her face showed her emotions well enough, it was why she would look down or away when he was around. It was even more embarrassing knowing he could probably read her like a book. When he spoke she followed him with her eyes as he went to his closet, making her feel slightly better. He returned, holding out something beautiful and shiny. Removing the sword, he handed it to her and she held it delicately in her hands.
It was the first time she had ever held an actual weapon. Even as a kid her mom never let her play with Devin’s pocket knives. Confusion crossed her face, then sorrow. As his personal weapon, what did it mean for him to let her use it for the battle? It was beautiful and she felt it had to be important since it came in a pair, right? More than that, though, she wondered if any of Devin’s clan had been killed with it. Or how many people had lost their lives to that blade who had been innocent like her and Devin, their only crime being that they had been born or made into what humans viewed as monsters. Moving on from that thought, she wondered where they had even come from. Were they a gift from their ‘mother’? Then, biting her lip, she looked up at him, wondering how to tell him she had no skills with weapons.
Before she could break the news, a knock came and she expected to see Elaina or Devin, but she didn’t know the face. Why hadn’t Elaina come to get them? Standing, she left the knife on the bed, worried if she took the sword out of the room everyone would get the wrong impression. When they entered the room she smiled at Elaina and Devin, but he just scowled. Why was he so grumpy? She had no idea… If Elaina let him feed like she suspected, then he should be in a good mood. Maybe he hit on her and she turned him down? Either way, as she was pushed to in front of the group, Elaina and Devin close to her, she felt warm and looked down, feeling awkward and on stage. Devin prodded her, encouraging her to look up, so she did, looking around the room and finding Jesse’s face. Desperate to not be obvious, she kept scanning and found Rayne starring at them. The gaze made her uncomfortable, but it was somehow easier to look at her than at Jesse or the other hunters.
Another hunter came up close and she felt herself impulsively get closer to Devin. It was for no reason, however, since the guy only wanted to spar with Elaina. The pair left and Devin was in tow of Elaina, to which Iri began to follow instinctively until Jesse went off back to his room, expecting her to follow. Which she did, her face getting warmer with every step they took. He was only there a moment, grabbing the pair of small swords, and saying they would practice. She tried to shake her head, but he was already heading outside. Giving her the one she has set on the bed, he removed the other one from its case and instructed her to attack. With a sigh, she hung her head.
”This is the first time I’ve ever held a sword.” Jesse approached her and she froze for a moment, unsure of why he was getting close. His footsteps began to sound like a beating heart, but she realized that it was her heart beating. Could he hear that too? With kindness, he showed her how to properly hold it, then he moved back and demonstrated a few things before insisting she attack him again. Internally groaning, she wasn’t sure what to say or do. Looking at him, despite his size, she just felt that he needed a hug more than anything. There was an inner child in him that hadn’t been loved and cared for the way she and her brother had and that was what she saw now. That child, holding the same sword, being told to attack and being scolded if he did anything wrong. Jesse insisted and she nodded, closing her eyes with a deep breath.
When she opened them, she ran at him, trying to slash at him. It was half-hearted, really, since she didn’t want any pain to come to him, but she was trying. It felt like forever, they went back and forth and she could feel herself sweating. How disgusting!? After seeing this, I’m sure he’ll see me as some gross beast. Then suddenly Jesse went rigid and she wondered if she got him. There was a rush of wind and Jesse struck out into darkness and she heard laughter. Something was there, with them, watching them and laughing. Her eyes scanned the darkness but she could see nothing there. Could Jesse see whatever it was? Moving closer to Jesse, she felt something strike her and she screamed and closed her eyes, lashing out with the sword still gripped tightly in her sweaty hands.
Apparently she and Jesse had struck at the same time, because laying between them, with open wounds on either of its side, laid a person. It wasn’t just any person, their eyes glowed a deep read and she knew that this was a vampire that fed until their victims were dead. She was covered with blood splatter and there was another voice in the dark laughing. Turning, holding the sword out with both hands, she shook as she waited for the next attack. There was a shout and then they came out of the woods, she didn’t realize the scream she let out, but Jesse got between them and attacked again. This one was dead too, as she turned to look for more, Devin ran to her, scanning her and she could hardly speak to him, sword still in hand. He was made at Jesse, but this wasn’t Jesse’s fault, but she still couldn’t speak or move. There were more, there had to be more!
((Hope this is okay? Sorry for moving Jesse so much, just assumed what he would do? You can correct anything, also wanted to give Elaina plenty of time to get in on the action))
