Who is he?
He is the former guitarist from Due le Quartz known then as Miyabi. He was in the band from June 1999 to September 2002 when the band eventually broke up. Shortly after that, he announced that he was going solo and changed his name to Miyavi. His first release was his album "Gagaku" and then two singles "POP IS DEAD" and "Shindemo Boogie-Woogie" which followed shortly after with PS Company serving as both his manager and label. In October of 2004, he made his major debut on the UNIVERSAL Music (of Japan) label with PS Company remaining his management. In January 2009, he graduated from PS Company and became independently managed under his own company, J-glam, Inc. At the start of 2010, he came into the New Year under a new recording label and was with EMI Music Japan, but returned to Universal as a part of Universal Music's buyout of EMI in 2012. He know releases through Virgin Records through the Universal Music Group. He's made a great amount of improvement in his music and singing since he embarked on his solo career, and he'll only get stronger as he continues on as a major artist. In 2014 he embarks on his first serious acting role with the part of Mutsuhiro Watanabe in Angelina Jolie's film UNBROKEN.

About the Thread

A new thread was in order to give the fans on Gaia the best resource possible. I hope you enjoy it, but first a few notes.

This thread is a place for discussion about Miyavi and not just a fan thread. Given that, both positive and negative opinions of Miyavi *ARE* allowed and encouraged. However, trolling in the thread is discouraged and a reportable offense.

Example of good negative discussion: "I don't like Miyavi because his voice is offputting"

Trolling and warnable: "Miyavi fans are gay"

If someone is trolling the thread, please ignore them and report them. Refrain from flaming them as flaming will get you warned as well.

Also, as we want to avoid the above situation, if you are going to post negative comments about Miyavi, it is suggested that you reasonably explain your opinion such as in the above example, but also be aware that the fans within the thread are also free to give a rebuttal your response as that is also part of discussion.

Please also note that elongated discussion and large paragraphs are *not* flaming. Not everyone in the thread will agree with you and some people will take the time to carefully write out why they disagree. It is merely part of a discussion, so don't fear it. That and a little bit of netiquette FYI, when someone writes with some words written like *THIS* it means they're trying to imitate tone of voice online and put emphasis on that particular word. 3nodding

Debate discussion examples:

"Actually, I think it's more that...."
"I don't particularly care for Miyavi because..."
"Actually Miyavi is *STILL* considered visual kei because..."

Trolling/flaming/things that will likely get you a talking to by a mod examples:

"Miyavi sucks and you're all retarded for liking him."
"I hope Miyavi dies in a plane crash."

The last couple of examples clearly are trying to rile people up and are not merely expressing an opinion on the artist, but are rather mean spirited comments or wishes. Don't do it.

This all might sound intimidating, but we don't bite and many of us are friendly and rather accepting of other people's opinions. We only ask that you're reasonable. heart 3nodding

Further, AVOID SPAMMING THE THREAD. Post *something* related to Miyavi. A sentence. A one word post does not a sentence make let alone a discussion. At least one sentence can promote something that maybe someone can respond to.

Rampant picture spamming is also discouraged. While the posting of pictures I'm okay with in general, what I mean by spamming is putting like 10-20 in one post. For the love of God, some people in the world still run on dial-up. I'm not one of them, but I know some people out there aren't fortunate enough to have high speed internet. They get by with whatever they can get, so I'd rather let them be welcome in here to discuss as well instead of shunning them away with a huge barrage of pictures.

Lastly, DO NOT EVER bump this thread. There is NO BUMPING whatsoever in this entire forum.

International Music Forum FAQ
4] BUMPBUMPBUMP domokun domokun domokun

Bumping is not allowed for the music forums because it doesn't do anything to further the discussion of music. Please do not bump in this forum. If you see individuals who are excessively bumping a topic please PM a moderator for this forum to assist with the problem.

By contact a moderator, that answer means that what you're doing is spamming the forum and SPAMMING MY THREAD. If you insist on bringing the thread up from page three or something, just write SOMETHING or ANYTHING about Miyavi in your post instead. At least that has a chance at starting a discussion and is relevant to the topic.

*This is a mixture off both the bio info from Night in Girl (which has now officially closed down) and the old Official website O-re-sa-ma.com (now dead) bio pages.

Birthday: September 14, 1981

Horoscope: Virgo / Pegasus*

Hairdo: Kitarou Hair / Kobochan Cut**

*Pegasus refers to another "horoscope" like thing. I''ve seen other artists call themselves this as well. I think it''s referring to this thing called CharaNavi. Nowadays the term refers to something else, but a year or so ago it referred to this horoscope-like system that helped people find the kind of jobs they were suited for or something.
**Miyavi references two different manga to try to describe his current hair style. Click the links for pictures of the manga.

New Official Bio

This is the official bio that is likely on Miyavi's one-sheet that just tells people about who he is.

Myv382tokyo Official Website
MIYAVI, a solo artist/guitarist from Japan. He is gaining recognition around the world for his unconventional style of playing the electric guitar, not with a pick, but with his fingers and his original 'slap style' which is like no other. MIYAVI has 4 successful world tours under his belt, which totals over 200 shows in 30 countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In the recent years, MIYAVI has gathered attention from other artists and creators in the field and has produced music for television commercials. He has also been featured in songs with Tomoyasu Hotei, Maki Nomiya and Good Charlotte, rapidly spreading his circle of activities. In 2013 MIYAVI entered a new phase by releasing a single "Ahead Of The Light", which features his 'slap guitar' with strong beats of electro/dance music. His self-titled album "MIYAVI" released in June 2013 in Japan, is now being released in Asia, Europe, and North American territories. With his debut as an actor in UNBROKEN (directed by Angelina Jolie, due Christmas 2014), inspired by the message of peace which he himself has strived for, he has been able to use all of his performing abilities this time to act -- as an actor who considers his body, and soul to be his instrument. Consistently aiming for the next level on a worldwide basis, people call him the "SAMURAI GUITARIST."

*Note on this track: While the title is KAVKI BOIZ, on the Japanese site, the song title is written in kanji as "Kabuki Danshi".

Three types of this single are to be expected just like in the previous singles prior to "Kimi ni Negai o". First press will reportedly get a poster and Types A & B of course come with DVDs.

For all three versions of the single, you have a chance to go on a trip to go see a public performance in Korea. You have to be in Japan to enter though because you have to enter by phone either by accessing the site or calling in. There'll be a slip inside the CD case with a number on it and further details. Basically it's a drawing and you enter it for a chance to win the trip. There'll be 4 winners and they'll be going on the trip in pairs. Applicants need to have a passport beforehand and should be over 20 years old (the legal age in Japan). For those who are minors, they need parent/guardian permission *BEFORE* they enter the contest.

While there will only be 4 winners, all applicants who enter will get a song for a present (which appears to be the 3rd track of the regular edition). You can enter from June 19 - June 27 at midnight. The winners will be announced on June 29.

#1. Subarashiki kana, Kono Sekai-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD-
#2. 2 b wiz U
#3. [Regular Version Only] Mata Yume de Aimashou

Similar to previous singles, there are three versions of the single, however, the format will be slightly different. There isn't going to be a double A-side swap thing happening. The tracks are going to be the same, except for the regular version which'll have a 3rd track voted on by fans participating in the 7 SAMURAI SESSIONS event.

Type A will have a DVD with compilation footage from Miyavi's performance in Germany as well as 30 minutes of making footage for the Subarashiki kana, Kono Sekai-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD- PV. This version will also feature a wonderful 32 page snapshot photobook from Miyavi's time in Los Angeles, a special sleeve case, and an application insert to go to a special event.

Type B has a DVD for the PVs of both of the main songs on the singles as well as an entry form on the CD sleeve.

The regular edition has the mystery 3rd track, plus an entry form on the CD sleeve as well.

For a special promotion for people who buy all three versions of the single, 5 groups of 10 people can win a chance for premium seats on the Christmas Neo Visualism concert on December 25, 2007 at the CC Lemon Hall. After the concert, those same winners will then have a chance to go to the green room back stage for an after party. In the A type version, there's a postcard where you can sticker on some kind of proof of purchase that's in each version. The cut off date for applications is November 19, 2007. More details are included on the enclosed insert for entry.

*Please note that because the event is being held IN JAPAN, it is probably limited to Japan only. (Also, getting a ticket there and a visa on short notice is not something most people outside of Japan would be able to do).

*Note on the title. The Japanese language does not actually utilize a "v" sound anywhere in it. Usually in katakanized form, a b sound is subtituted for a v, so the title should actually read like "Kabuki Boys", but Miyavi was being creative and messed with the lettering.

**Note 2: On the previous preliminary tracklist, Ippiki Ookami Ron was listed, but now it has been removed. Could this mean a future surprise?

The limited edition version comes with a DVD that'll have some bonus features including commentary by Miyavi and a live version of "Ossan Ossan Ore Nanbo". The DVD itself is generally a performance of most of the songs on the mini-album. The song that's left out is "Kimi ni Negai o" as instead they performed "Ossan Ossan Ore Nanbo".

The songs listed appear to be songs that have been released before, but apparently remixed to Miyavi's most recent style as of the 5 Day live this past fall (Tap, Turntable, MC, Drums, etc.)

The people that got the first press of the regular version will have a raffle entry form enclosed with their mini-album that could win them a chance to preview a new song Miyavi will be releasing in the fall. The people participating in this event also get to VOTE for the new tracks on the upcoming single.

Although admittedly, if you have MYV*POPS and the Hitorigei and THIS IZ THE ORIGINAL SAMURAI STYLE DVDs, this probably isn't too significant.

This live was rather special because it was more performing art rather than a rock concert. The following is an excerpt from the English version of the site that officially describes these lives:

For Miyavi to start 2007, The last and the only live performance in Japan "5days in TOKYO Geijutsu gekijo" at 9/18 has picturized. A state to play is the best part which Miyavi energetically plays guitar with the original solo style, performance collaborated with a tap dancer, percussionist, human beat boxer, turn table player, GigPig drummer, and also a Japanese drum player.

This is an entertainment art article of surprise to give all any people regardless of age or sex surprise and satisfaction. The first press has 5 luxurious privileges of extra contents including documentary film and more. Please enjoy the musicality and possibility of Miyavi who breaks a frame of Visual Kei Rock.

First press editions came with a poster of the cover.

Wagahai
ISBN-4-8401-0850-1
-A photo essay book with pictures of Miyavi during the shoot of Oresama, hanging around town (with other people), hanging out with some kids, going to malls, and other things. The essay portion of it is mostly Miyavi's commentary on previous parts of his life like when he was home, his first love, people important to him when he was a kid, his time in Due le Quartz, what it was like to go solo, etc. An inspiring read for those who can read Japanese although it has little more than a reflective connection to the photos seen in it.

Miyavi's 2008 Calendar

The calendar was only available for order at Lawson's convenient stores in Japan and from a few select places that would actually place orders for overseas fans. The calendar came with a photo of Miyavi and was printed double sided meaning that you had a choice what picture you wanted for particular months. One side had more general photo shoot style poses, while the flip side of the calendar had an image of several Miyavis posing together. The calendar was very limited in quantity and it was made clear on the official website that they could run out.

Miyavi's 2009 Calendar

The calendar is available through Lawson Ticket in Japan. Overseas, J-xyz and Crescent Shop have both provided quotes with J-xyz being the cheaper of the two. Crescent Shop is offering it at $73 flat, while J-xyz's offer is at $35 plus shipping. Shipping varies depending on how bad you want it, but even at the fastest shipping method, the price is $62. If you're willing to wait a few weeks, the price is just $53. Lawson ticket also advertises that there will be a special photo present included with the calendar. The calendars will be distributed on December 26, 2008 so make sure you don't go and get conned by someone saying they'll give it to you before then.

Lawson ticket site: http://l-tike.com/shopping/item/miyavi_gazette.html

Miyavi's 2010 Calendar

The calendar was only available through the official web store on Miyavi's website. Those who wanted to order it overseas needed to go through a 3rd party buyer that could buy from Japan and then ship it to your country of residence.

Limited Edition Box Set

This box set was originally only available by going to Miyavi's graduation live with PSC. PSC sold it there as a must have collector's item for about $100 (10,000 yen), but it is now available to all through Marumusic for only $75.

The DVD is a live DVD of Miyavi's 2nd concert ever at the same venue as his graduation live -- Hibiya Yagai Daiongakudo. Included with the DVD are two photobooks. One is a collection of photos from Miyavi's lives and the other a collection of miscellaneous photoshoots from over the years from single promotion, the "trading cards" and official images PSC was trying to provide to discourage fans from disseminating Miyavi's picture on the internet rolleyes , and tour goods that would have only been available if you bought items at his concerts in Japan or South Korea.

Some other items available via Miyavi's Web Store: http://miyavi.shop-pro.jp/

Note: This information is not complete. There are some tour items which it would be *very* hard to track down and thus difficult to catalogue or find anywhere. Also not included are Miyavi's Official Fan Club items and goods from his Due le Quartz days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What's Oresama?
A. The movie that Miyavi made about himself...sort of. He also calls himself this and tends to have a big attitude. "Ore" meaning "I", and "sama" being the honorific used to honor someone like royalty or like...really important together should give you an idea of how huge his ego is. Supposedly. It actually isn't and he's super nice. He's also discarded that persona in recent years. The movie Oresama is somewhat about himself. He travels to 1984 and meets himself for some random reason and impacts the lives of his younger self and a struggling new rocker named Shinii. It's somewhat entertaining and more of a fanservice movie and the dates are actually fudged (a lot) between the age of his younger self and his actual age, but it's definitely worth watching if you're interested in him or a huge fan. There is an officially licensed English subbed version of the film that you can now buy on Amazon

Q. Where can I buy stuff?
A. Check the links section. Starting May 22, you can also check on iTunes.com for Miyavi's major albums. Official tour goods and stuff are also available on the official website and they ship overseas because Miyavi loves his fans no matter where they're from.

Q. I wanna join his official fan club! How do I do that?
A. Go to here: http://myv382tokyo.com/pages/guidance/ Everything is transferred there from C.W.I.F. Worldwide to the new MYV CREW FC, which is now consolidated with Miyavi's main site. If you had a membership before, your login information also still works with the new system.

Q. I wanna buy a Miyavi DVD (Oresama, Hitorigei, Hitorigei 2, Hitorigei 3, limited edition DVD, etc.). Will it play in my DVD player?
A. YES. It will. CDJapan and most shops often times don't change the region coding information when they add items to their catalogue, but rest assured all of Miyavi's DVDs are *ALWAYS* all region. When you get the DVD, if you just check on the back you'll notice that the shop didn't bother to change the info on their website as the logo there clearly says "ALL". Other artists though often have DVDs that "lie" in that it'll be marked 2, but it's actually all region, so for those instances you just have to do research on the DVD, but this is not so for Miyavi. His distributors seemed to have had the foresight to make them all "all region". Oresama is also now officially licensed and available with English subs! Buy it on Amazon!

Q. Where else can I get stuff or even more information?
A. Google. The links section, and the rest of the thread provides MUCH information so you should not have much of a problem. If you're still feeling really helpless with it though, feel free to ask.

Q. I love Miyavi's piercings. Do you know where I can get them?
A. You can probably ask someone to stick the hole in you yourself, but the lipring and earring you can find at various places online. I hear that the types of piercings Miyavi has though aren't really that uncommon and you can get a good gauge sized one by just asking your piercer. 3nodding

Q. Who's Noriko?
A. She's the hostess of a show where she interviews a lot of rock artists.

Q. Who's Megumi and why did Miyavi sing a song to her?
A. Megumi's the wife of the former host of LFX. Apparently the host wrote lyrics and had Miyavi write a song and sing it.

Q. Who's melody.?
A. Miyavi's wife. =3 She was a popular recorded singer herself and also was a host for J-melo. She's since ended her music career and time as host on the show and is looking into fashion design.

Q. Who's Lovelie?
A. Miyavi's cute little daughter born on July 29, 2009. Her full name's Lovelie Miyavi Ishihara with "Lovelie" also being a kanji pun with the reading of her Japanese name (愛理 which normally reads as "Airi" )

Q. Who's Jewelie?
A. Miyavi's youngest daughter born on October 20, 2010. Her full name's Jewelie Aoi Ishihara. I think they tried to make her name a pun too, but it didn't really make as much sense so I'm not sure.

Q. Isn't Miyavi hot? (Or some other statement or question similar to that)
A. Yes, he is quite attractive. As much as we like talking about how good looking he is and we're welcome to go into that convo again, it's highly recommended that when you post more than a one-liner that simply states so. That way we can have a fun discussion too.

Q. What's Miyavi's real name?
A. Miyavi had stated that he didn't want it spread around anymore, but he'd announced it himself on his website when he started J-glam, Inc. However, it appears he hasn't really revealed the actual kanji for his name because he keeps changing it.

Q. Birthplace/hometown? I thought it was all just Hyougo!
A. They're actually different as of the November 2005 edition of ROCK AND READ magazine. This is the same magazine where Miyavi admits his half Korean ancestry. He talks about how his grandparents lived in Tsuruhashi in Konohana Ward in Osaka City so he was born in another area in Osaka City known as Nishikujou which is also in Konohana Ward. Most other places with this information cite the locate as "Nishikujou, Japan", but this is actually an incorrect citation because Nishikujou isn't a prefecture or even a city or even a ward. It's a very specific area within one ward of the city (it actually could be a street now that I'm looking at addresses in Konohana). For hometown, it's still considered to be Kawanishi City, Hyougo as the place you most affiliate yourself with and consider your "hometown" can be different from your birthplace. These days after confronting his mixed ancestry and becoming a more worldly artist though, Miyavi seems to have departed from connections from any specific locality and has since removed it from his profile descriptions of himself.

Q. Where is the info about his Korean last name?
A. It's actually also in the November 2005 edition of ROCK AND READ magazine. Miyavi mentions how his last name is Lee and how he thought it was cool when he was little because there was Bruce Lee who shared the name too. xd

Q. What does PS Company stand for?
A. Two things actually. If you look at the logo it says both "Phalanx of Swashbucklers Company?" and "Phonetically Syndaclism Company". Personally, I think the former makes a lot more sense. sweatdrop As of November 23, 2005 though, PSC joined up with King Records and became Peace & Smile Music. Further, as of January 2009, Miyavi graduated from PS Company and is now independently managed through his own company J-Glam, Inc.

Q. Can I post pictures?
A. Sure you can. Just try to be considerate of others on dial-up though and don't post too many in one post. I'd say not more than 3 or 4 is a good number if they're huge. I realize there's a bunch of pics already on the front page, but they're web safe and most of them were taken right off O-re-sa-ma.com and were made to load for speed even on that page and are also important to fans to help them track down these items. When you're in a store, visual recognition will help you find an item the easiest. 3nodding

Q. Can I post fanart/winamp skins/wallpaper/icons/banners/etc that I've made?
A. Of course. 3nodding Many of us love seeing the kinds of things that Miyavi has inspired our fellow fans to do. Just be mindful of others and use thumbnails or links if the picture is incredibly large.

Q. Can I still be random?
A. Of course! Just don't get WAY offtopic, because this IS a Miyavi thread. That doesn't mean you can have a little bit of fun though.

Q. Your discography says that track 4 of Miyavizm is "Pop 'n' Roll Koushien (Baseball)", but isn't it Dappunroru?
A. No, it isn't. Some site somewhere made a mistake in their katakana and a lot of people who can't read Japanese took that for truth and it spread like wildfire with people writing "Dappunroru" on their pages and mislabeling songs. The correct katakana for it is "Poppunroru" which basically turns into "Pop 'n' Roll". How someone can get a po (ポ) and a da (ダ) mixed up is beyond me though since they don't look alike. Is katakana really that hard? Also I have the track written that way as kind of a favor to people learning Japanese because "Koushien" means "baseball" in Japanese, but when you read off the title, you should just read it as "Pop 'n' Roll Baseball" because the parenthesis in Japanese grammar is an indication of how to read the word before it and acts as furigana.

Q. Your discography lists Aho Matsuri with only that as the title, but doesn't the title have two parts to it in both kanji and katakana? And some places list the title as "Ahou Sai -Aho Matsuri-"
A. Yes, but BOTH still just say "Aho Matsuri". Technically, the kanji should be correctly romanized as "Ahou Matsuri", but the subtitle in katakana "Aho Matsuri" acts like furigana for the kanji in that it *TELLS* you how to read the song title and what the title is. Writing the title doubly or even rewriting "matsuri" to its other kanji reading "sai" is actually an incorrect reading and redundant.

Q. I was reading the bio of Miyavi you have up and who the flip is Muddy Waters?
A. Muddy Waters is an American artist from the Chicago Blues scene during the 1960s when a lot of African Americans moved into urban areas for work. The Chicago Blues scene is regarded as the roots of Rock 'n' Roll as when bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones came out, they were trying to make music that was reminiscent of Muddy Waters and other artists related to Chicago Blues. If Miyavi looks up to this man, then he sure knows his rock history and seems to be trying to get back to the roots of the music he loves. 3nodding

Q. I saw Miyavi's appearance on Hey Hey Hey and what the hell is a PHS?
A. A PHS is basically a cell phone only older than what's referred to currently as a cell phone (keitai denwa) in Japan. It's basically a portable phone, which translates for us in the West simply as a cell phone, but in Japan there was a whole time when the bulkier ancestor to modern cell phones were called something else. Whether or not the term applied to cordless phones, I'm not exactly sure. On Hey Hey Hey though Miyavi did remark that when he first came to Tokyo, one of the only things he had was a PHS. In Final Fantasy VII as well, they use a PHS as a communicator to change parties, so one can only assume that it means more than cordless.

Q. Can I post about Due le Quartz?
A. Well, you kind of can at least if what you're trying to say pertains more to Miyavi as Miyabi at that time. Due le Quartz still is part of Miyavi's life and is probably a significant influence on him, but at the same time try to keep the focus to be more on him and don't trail off too much about the other band members.

Q. Can I post about SKIN?
A. Similar to the Due le Quartz question, this means yes you can. While Yoshiki, Gackt, and Sugizo are also part of the band, I would like to make sure that we keep discussion *RELATED* to Miyavi in some way. Discussion of the other three as well is unavoidable, but discussion about a specific member that isn't Miyavi *SHOULD* be avoided. This is the Miyavi thread afterall. Gackt has his own thread and so does Sugizo and X-Japan and Jrock Revolution for Yoshiki. I'm okay with there being more general discussion about the band, but when an official SKIN thread finally gets appointed, I'd appreciate it if people utilize that thread as well.

Q. I don't like/hate Miyavi. Can I post here?
A. Yes, but prepared to back up your argument with knowledge of his career, logic, and reason. Everyone is free to express any opinion they have on him whether positive or negative, but we want peaceful discussion here and the best way to do that is to express yourself in debate format and defend your opinions reasonably. We are a kind bunch here and many of us are fully capable of respecting any opinions that arise, but blatant hate mongering is strongly discouraged and a reportable offense.

Example of good negative discussion: "I don't like Miyavi because his voice is offputting"

Trolling and warnable: "Miyavi fans are gay"

If someone trolls in the thread, please ignore them and report them. Those who flame trolls are still flaming and will get reported.

Q. Is Miyavi visual kei?
A. Yes. Visual kei by and large is a subculture amongst Japanese rock that emphasizes look and appearance in a number of ways and Miyavi has *NEVER* strayed away from that although his music style has changed. Visual kei in itself though is *NOT* defined by the type of music the band plays, and thus that is partly why Miyavi can still be classified as such. The subculture itself is very much a fashion rather than musically linked. Further evidence of Miyavi's continued tie to visual kei culture, however, can be found in his albums and music as well as quite blatantly in various places on his official websites. Even further proof that he's still considered among visual kei artists is the fact that he *still* appears in magazines like Shoxx, which features visual and shock bands and artists. Miyavi's very much not a shock artist, so guess which one he falls under?

Q. I want to send Miyavi mail/packages! Where do I send it to?
A. As of December 1, 2009, please send fan mail and packages here:

「FanCube」 MYV CREW ATTN: 雅-MIYAVI-
Dai 6 Senyou Bld. 3F, 2-2-16, Shimo-Meguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, 153-0064 ,Japan

Q. Miyavi keeps changing labels! What label is he on now?
A. Honestly, he's only changed labels technically twice, but there's been some recent upheavals in the music industry lately so it just gets confusing. Anyway, when Miyavi was in his Indies stage, he was with PS Company as both his management and his record label. When he went major, his new major record label with was UNIVERSAL Music Japan. When he left PS Company and started J-Glam, Inc. shortly after he moved to EMI on December 31, 2009. However, EMI got bought out by Universal on September 28, 2012 where basically he got re-possessed by Universal, but under the EMI arm. This was pretty big news because essentially one of the biggest music labels in the industry was bought out by another Big 4 music label. Crazy. In February of 2013, different properties of EMI were sold to the Warner Music Group, so in probably in an effort to define where Miyavi stood in that process, he officially got moved to the Virgin Records sub-label under the Universal Music Group family to retain and remain at his current label, so his last few releases have been released via Virgin Records.

Q. I'm confused, yo! Miyavi's new bio says he made his acting debut, but what about Oresama?
A. Yeah, "technically" it's not really his debut because Oresama exists, but on the international stage and in a REAL acting job it is a debut of sorts in that it's a serious dramatic role where he plays someone who's NOT HIMSELF. Also, as much as I love Miyavi as a fan, I dunno if I would call his performance in Oresama acting. It's likely that when they drafted his bio for international people they wanted to overlook that Oresamaexisted because it's kind of embarrassing and not really important to an international (read: American) audience. Plus, for all the entertainment companies know, it is his debut since he wasn't in any films that THEY know of (Western-centric much?) and they probably wouldn't bother doing a thorough research job to find Oresama anyway because it's not relevant to their audience.

Q. How come when I search for Miyavi on places like CDJapan I get other artists' releases too?
A. Miyavi's been super active in the music industry as of late and has done many collaborations with other artists. The ones among his own releases include KREVA, YUKSEK, and Hotei Tomoyasu, but he's also done compositions for SMAP and Yamashita Tomohisa among others. He's truly a multi-talented musician and he's letting his talents shine.

We arrived at Tabu at about a quarter to 11, I think. After clearing up some stuff with the manager about our reservation, we got into the general admission line for the club. We didn't wait that long and when we entered were were also checked with a metal detector. The admission fee was $20 for women and $30 for men. The inside of the club was partitioned into three main sections. The left side from the entrance was an area with tables and red seats for reservations. The middle section was in a bit of a dip with sofas with purplish apolstery surrounding low concrete tables. The part of that section directly right of the entrance had a table in an alcove for more private drinking and the upper area of that section was the DJ's "cage". The right of the section was another area of tables that was literally fenced off by a large black-painted wooden structure. On the right side of the DJs cage was the walkway to the bathrooms. The general ambient lighting in the club was in a bluish hue with mostly flashing red lights. Above the concrete tables was a projector of each set (of which there were two sets of concrete tables and apolstery).

The manager had informed us that Miyavi wouldn't be on until 12:30 am, so we just waited inside until the appointed time. At about 12:00 am, I saw a dark figure out of the right corner of my eye with a familiar hairstyle passing by. I paused for a moment and gave i know everything to the left of me a light smack on the arm as he passed in front of us. Miyavi was basically sporting his Miyaviuta outfit minus the hoodie with pink trim. He headed to the concrete table section closest to the DJ cage. As he sat in his exclusive private section in the middle purple apolstery area, eager fans pretty immediately began to gather around him for pictures and such.

After a bit of time passed, Miyavi got up and began dancing with some of the scantily clad model club waitresses. It was actually pretty amusing to see him doing club dancing and dancing to music that my friends and I dance to when we go clubbing like Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone". It's a normal thing for sure for the American club experience, but it's the mental association with Miyavi that in this case is rather peculiar.

He sat down again after a few minutes of that and at some point he'd removed his blazer which prompted a swoon from some of the onlookers. When it was close to 12:30, they began to set up bongo drums on the section of concrete tables across from Miyavi. About 10-15 minutes after the designated time, Miyavi got out his acoustic guitar and began playing. Initially most of the performance was to flashing colored lights until they settled on a plain white light that mainly focused on Miyavi. The various colored lights still came by during this time, but there was significantly more white light. The first part of the performance was quite similar to the intro to "Are you ready to ROCK?" with the percussion on the guitar body. After some jamming on that, the bongo player joined in. The sound for this was similar to "How to love" from Miyaviuta~Dokusou~. After some amount of time passed, Miyavi got really into it and jumped around enthusiastically. Soon after the bongo portion, Miyavi removed his shoes revealing red nail polish on his toenails that noticeably drew some attention as he slipped his right foot into a makeshift contraption of a sneaker with no back tied to an open half tambourine. With that added some jingle to the sound of the performance.

By now, the white light was the sole light on him and the pink and blue streaks in the bangs of his hair and the streaks he used for his eye shadow were clearly visible.

After the acoustic guitar, he changed to electric and jammed a bit until he invited the DJ to jam with him as well. The jamming continued with the three forms of performance/instrument for a good while and then the performance wrapped up. If you've seen the This is Oudou live performance, this portion is very much liek the Rhythm Battle from that live.

Overall, Miyavi really seemed to get into his performance, but it was mainly a gig and an instrumental performance rather than other lives we're used to. By and large it was mostly a jam session and an intimate performance than an all out concert. Music and beats still tried to keep with the club theme so that other patrons could continue dancing and vocals were probably excluded partly because of language barriers and prejudice against languages that "can't be understood". Miyavi's actual songs though also aren't really associated with club dancing either, so the choice to do what he did was probably a good one and the best way to peak an interest in a foreign crowd. I'll get into further details about the audience for that weekend later because it is a rather important aspect to remember.

An interesting point though was the DJ's introduction for him. He referred to him as "the world's #1 Kabuki Rockstar". The association or even translation of visual kei or even Miyavi's "Neo Visualism" to Kabuki I found to be quite interesting, but I suppose to the other patrons in the club that don't know a lot about him or other artists like him (or Japanese culture really for that matter), Kabuki would probably be the most familiar association.

After the performance, Miyavi and his crew vacated to the bathroom area. After a time, they returned with the venue's sign advertising his performance for him to sign in his private area. Shortly after that, they opened up the area for a meet and greet autograph session. The line of fans started along the wooden structure separating the mid-section from the right section of private tables. A bouncer handled the line's queue for the session and even ousted some of the overly rowdy from the line. After that was done, Miyavi disappeared to the bathroom area again and only returned later to greet some of the people he knew that were hanging out in his private area. After that he probably left the venue and as it got later in the night, his fans also seemed to slowly trickle out. All that remained was mostly the people in his party that were probably associates partying it up until the morning along with the general weekend traffic that was only in Vegas for the NBA ALL STAR event or Chinese New Year. Quite literally, Vegas was crowded and everyone and their Mom was there. Many of those same people had opted to go clubbing and attended the very same club Miyavi performed at, so given that there was such a diverse set of patrons, it was probably a smart move on Miyavi's part to focus his performance on his best skill of playing guitar.

Miyavi's Joining a New Band! - Thank you Pumpkin/Orgasmic Generation!
Orgasmic Generation
He's thinking of joining a band.

New comment.

Miyavi video translation
He said he's back in Japan, and that 300 grams of tenderloin steak, two smoked salmon and something salads, 2 something asparagus, and 200 gram delicious hamburger, but he's not any fatter so no worries.
(I'm not worried at all about fat but look at HIS HAIR AND HIS SKIN! ouch)
He said that he has something he wants to tell everyone, but not in a text, rather in a comment, in person, right there as he's tired, as he's wanting to tell everyone.

He said it's been four years since his old band broke up, and he debuted as a soloist in 2002. Being in a band was amazing, as it was said in magazines as well, but it didn't work out and he had to go solo. And now it's been four years, and it's all thanks to everyone. He said he's really feels that from his heart.
He said he thought that soccer and being in a band were over for him, but that next year, he's thinking of being in a band, playing guitar. He found an amazing guy (older than him), and he thought he'd like to try screaming in the background once again (laugh), so he hopes we look forward to it.
He can't say who's going to be in the band yet, but he hopes that they can in the new year. He's sorry for making everyone, especially Comiyavi, wait for so long this year, so that's why he decided to make a comment.
But of course, he still wants to continue his solo act as a solo artist, so he wants everyone to look forward to it.
He said he'll be working on pre-productions and he's thinking about going back to Los Angeles again, and he knows everyone's going to miss him but he's still going to play guitar, doing neo-visualism.
(Miyavi deshita.........)
Oh and he's going to make sure that he can write Japanese in his journal again.
(baibai)

On Saturday of Jrock Revolution during the middle of Miyavi's performance, he told the audience that he had something to tell them and had us screaming "What?" like "What is it?" Then a video sequence played that showed information about Yoshiki's band and announced Miyavi as the 4th member. After that he invited Sugizo of Luna Sea out to the stage and they jammed together for a song. Yoshiki came out after that to talk more about it and announce that their first performance would be June 29th at Anime Expo. He also told everyone that Gackt couldn't make it, but said "Hi". Ironically *AT* the concert, Yoshiki told us everything except for the band's name.

Anime Expo then reported the news on the website and posted the band's name (THANK YOU AX FOR BEING ON THE BALL!). Ticketing for this event is expected to be the same as the rest of the concerts AX has which is usually through the Main Events arena thus being a ticketed event in which you need both a con badge *AND* a ticket to the event. AX ticketed events are given out differently than for any other concert or anything you've been too before. Those who stay in the Anime Expo block at official hotels will get a voucher which allows them to trade in for ONE (1) TICKET to ONE (1) of the main events whether it be a concert, masquerade, AX Idol, Anime Music Videos, etc. Please note though that rooms for the AX block in the official hotels have *ALREADY* been sold out since before the announcement. The second method is new where you can pay for premium tickets before June 15th. Premium tickets have not yet gone on sale. The last method is to wait in line and 2 hours before the event they will be handed out. Once you get your ticket though, you won't have very much to worry about with people cutting in front of you. The last few years AX has *ALWAYS* color coded their tickets meaning that a ticket is colored to allow you to sit in ONE particular section. There might be some issue with people with the same color ticket in front of you, but if someone's supposed to sit way in the back and they cut in front of you in line, they *CAN'T* sit in front of you. AX staff will tell them to go to the right colored section and won't let them in through that section. People miffed at stuff that happened at the Wiltern will probably appreciate this. Staff members for AX also tend to be a bit more serious when you cause problems. They can and do eject people from the con if the act too much like a dumbass and when you register for your badge, it's part of their "Code of Conduct Policy". Read it carefully or even for your entertainment. Some parts of it are actually pretty funny. They have a sense of humor.

Contest Guidelines/Rules/Info

Below, we have the basic guidelines for the contests. I know it's a bit ambitious, but we have 5 categories -- Fanart, Winamp Skins, Wallpaper, Banners, and Icons. The 5 categories is kind of an experiment for this year, since I wanna see what kind of turnout we'll have for this kind of thing and for each category. I'm making it worth your while though because we have some spectacular grand prizes, so enter!

Prizes

Grand Prizes:
Fanart - Thank You Letter for February 2005
Winamp - Thank You Letter for September 2005
Wallpaper - Thank You Letter for July 2005
Banners - Thank You Letter for April 2005
Icons - Thank You Letter for October 2006

2nd Place:
All levels - Collectible for September 2008 or zOMG! Rumble box

3rd Place:
Miscellaneous grab bag from items I have reserved that range in value from around 5k to 17k right now (I checked the market place when I was selecting them).

I'm going to pre-emptively set a deadline for September 14th 12:01 am. I wanna spend the day having voting and some thread partying taking place. I might postpone it for some more entrants depending on how this goes. See below for contest details.

General contest rules

1. One entry per category per person.

2. The art must be yours (obviously).

3. Non-fans can join too! I will be providing some resource pictures and links in the last of the thread set up posts so that you can enter and win prizes too! In the end, the fans win anyway. =D

4. Anti-entrants also welcome, but in a restricted format. It's a birthday thread, so generally things should be positive, but I'm a fan of humor and the idea that you can make fun of someone without being overly insulting. Besides, I've seen a good amount of anti-Miyavi icons that were funny and enjoyable to fans too. Like one icon featuring part of the "Ashita, Genki ni Naare" PV that said "Miyavi rides the short bus!" Something silly like this can also make you eligible to be a winner. biggrin

5. Entries can be posted in the contest thread, posted in the Official Miyavi Thread in the International forum, or PMed.

6. Entries will be posted in the appropriate posts in the contest thread for viewing/judging.

Fanart

These would be hand drawn, pencil, paintings, CG, MS Paint, T-shirts, a cookie, etc. Basically handicrafts, but I'm not opposed to digitally painted images either. This category has the most creative freedom, but remember people will be voting on your work. Have fun!

Winamp Skins

Skins to decorate your winamp. Not really a lot of skinners out there today that are good and I'm just curious if there are any others out there besides me that love Miyavi. DO NOT submit skinner skins made with an automatic skin making program. They are hideous. If you REALLY love an artist, character, or celebrity, invest the time to make a winamp skin that is pleasing to the eyes to do them justice.

Wallpaper

Desktop wallpapers for people's computers. Might not seem that hard, but seriously I wanna see some kind of art here and not just a picture that you cropped to fit 1024x768 resolution. 1024x768 would also be the minimum size. I'd allow sizes for wide screen monitors as well, but wallpapers really shouldn't be too small considering a lot of people have large resolutions now and they'll want something that'll fit their screen without being pixelated. Wallpapers are also harder than you think because it's a rather LARGE digital canvas. I have a tricky time with them too.

Banners

These can be any size within reason. Within reason meaning that people should be able to load the page in a reasonable amount of time and it probably shouldn't stretch the page to an excessive degree. They can be still or animated and can be of any theme.

Icons

Similar to banners in content/theme. I'd prefer that the size be 100x100 size, but if you want to make them a different size for your particular aesthetic you can or if you want to also provide alternate smaller versions feel free.
