Welcome to Gaia! ::

A new study on Brown Rice Syrup has found that there is high levels of arsenic in this ingredient, which is found in energy bars, energy 'shots' and infant formula. The FDA, of course, sets no limits on the levels of arsenic in your food.

Now maybe these are just "bad eggs," right? Maybe these guys will be subjected by market pressure to change their ways. But it wasn't market pressure that outed this practice, it was science. I don't think there's such a thing as good and evil, but the more I read, the more it seems that science is "good" and the economy is "evil". Because as is referenced by Mr. Hunt,

there is also arsenic in your meat,
and in your fruit juice.

Just in case you're still not convinced that neither markets nor the government are socially responsible, there is glyphosate in your urine. Glyphosate is also known as Roundup, and is known to cause liver and reproductive problems.
BPA is detectable in 93% of Americans over age 6, and is now being found to cause serious harm in doses much lower than the FDA limits. Of course, the market spent lots of money lobbying against a BPA ban, and so it was shot down.

If you think the rich give a ******** about you, a study this year found that wealth causes people to be even douchier.
Another found that 1 in 25 business leaders may be a psychopath, while the estimated prevalence of psychopathy in the general population is only 1%. That means that the qualities of a psychopath are far more desirable to the market than those of a normal person.
Companies carrying out fracking use lower and middle class homeowners to hedge their risk by having them lease out their own property without being informed of the danger.
The establishment doesn't even want us to be self-sufficient or share with each other. Isn't anyone else tired of this, yet?

Well, you had me up to the line where you said: "If you think the rich give a ******** about you". Here's a clue for you, Monsieur Monkeyhead: Arsenic is found naturally in a lot of fruits and vegetables. That bit of knowledge has nothing to do with the rich or corporations.

Take a look at the first part of your screen name, mon ami and do it.

While some of this is interesting you would probably be better served by sticking to one topic per thread. You've got arsenic in brown rice syrup, Roundup in urine, rich people are douchebags, rich people are psychopaths, rules against collecting rainwater and articles about regulation of trade and bartering. And you couched it in wording that basically says big government and big business hate all us little people.

I felt it a better idea than creating loads of separate threads and spamming the entire front page of the forums.
You have more to discuss, and it is indeed related.
I don't think they "hate" us, but they certainly do have a system that is neatly set up to reward them for ******** us. Banks make the rich richer and the poor poorer by design. Taxes are set up to do the same. The legal system is set up to do the same. The prison system is set up to do the same. The military...you get where I'm going with this.
The topic is "look, we poor people are still getting ********, and neither your market solutions nor your state solutions work."
When you learn something, which is what you do when you read the news, it is not enough to just learn facts, you need to understand how they relate to one another. That is how your brain is programmed to run, it's called associative memory. Stop complaining about the way I write and discuss. biggrin

Oh gee, let me pull some more examples out of my hat, then.
Five of the world's most profitable businesses need your tax dollars
Big Oil's Banner Year: Higher prices, less oil.
60 [years old] and still not out of debt: Seniors facing $36BN in college loans
The richest 1% captured 93% of income gains in 2010
Again, rich people are scientifically demonstrated to be less generous, charitable, trusting, and helpful than the rest of us. It's because gaining tremendous wealth in our economic system requires those traits.
Edit: See below about it being "naturally" in lots of fruits and vegetables.

No, apples have arsenic (at levels that greatly exceed drinking water standards, which has no problem preventing arsenic from being in our water) in them because farmers used to use lead-arsenate pesticides and they are still spreading through the ecosystem. If your juice has too much arsenic in it, don't sell the god damn juice, and definitely don't market it to kids as healthy when it's full of carcinogens.

The study doesn't list any products it can be allegedly found in (ie brands of formula or energy bars). And to the claim of BPA. Most if not all products are BPA free and they brag about it. Further proof of the decline of BPA:
Quote:
Currently 11 states have banned BPA from baby bottles and children's sippy cups. In October 2011, California became the latest to enact such legislation, when it passed the Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act. The American Medical Association also recently announced its support of tighter restrictions on products containing BPA.

Organizations like the American Chemistry Council (ACC) have been lobbying to make BPA federally recognized as a safe product. The ACC is composed of companies that represent 85% of chemical manufacturing capacity in the United States. The ACC position states that BPA is safe for use in products. "Government and scientific bodies around the globe have extensively evaluated the weight of scientific evidence on bisphenol A (BPA) and have declared that BPA is safe as used, including in materials that come into contact with food, such as reusable foodstorage containers and linings in metal cans." An interesting read on fracking

Do you know how many gallons of apple juice a child would need to drink per day to get the amount of carcingenic levels you're talking about? I know you're still too young to remember this but when you drink apple juice it doesn't stay inside you for very long. You flush it out. Guess what else gets flushed out? Yeah, that's right: a lot of the nutrients and "carcinogens" in the juice.

Monsieur Monkeyhead, just admit that you're lonely and you want someone to pay attention to you.

Provide me a reference that shows that arsenic does not bioaccumulate in humans.
Spoilers: If they bioaccumulate in other mammals then they probably do in humans.

Guess what your body does before it flushes things out? It absorbs things from it, and just because you're flushing out waste does not mean you are flushing out arsenic.
By the way, I've just found that arsenic does accumulate and it's responsible for DNA methylation and oxidative stress, (also known as epigenetic changes) which gives it its carcinogenic properties.

Let's put it this way, kid. Would it be better to have arsenic in juice or to not have arsenic in juice?

One of the biggest sources is soup cans. Campbell's has gone BPA free but General Mills "ain't buying it".

And here's the other problem: The same people that used BPA in the first place are the same ones that we're supposed to trust with finding a suitable alternative. Just like lead arsenate DDT, and glyphosate, just like coal and leaded gasoline and modern gasoline and natural gas. You can't fix a broken system from within. Whatever alternative they come up with is likely to also be harmful to us or the environment. Toxic things are cheaper because nobody wants them, and corporations are forced to make decisions based on the law of cost effectiveness, so there's always a case to be made for putting toxic or at least dodgy things in your products.

Masquerade! Paper faces on parade. Masquerade!

Here is an idea: do not eat or drink any fruit or vegetables and you should be arsenic free. Do you even know how many other toxic substances accumulate in your body just from breathing the air around you? Any organic body is built to withstand and eliminate pathogens that it would otherwise not naturally produce or need. Sure, downing arsenic-rich foods every day for all of your meals will eventually lead to something failing, but you have to give your body credit about how it flushes out toxins. Toxins exist everywhere and in everything. Even in untouched areas of the world exists poisonous gases and other substances that the Earth emits on a daily basis; it is just a natural thing no one blinks an eye to. It is the larger doses caused by the arrogant businesses and corporations at one time that are harmful and dangerous.

Go organic. Grow your own produce and produce your own juices and dishes. Join movements against modern day farming practices and educate a wider range of people all over the world. Become part of the solution instead of encouraging the problematic practices. That is all one can do until huge epiphanies happen within societies and their corresponding governments to eliminate these greedy instances.

Hide your face so the world will never find you.

Hmmm.....Did you come up with that "put down" on your own or did you get a grown up to help you?

Monsieur Monkeyhead, sometimes your blatherings are a diversion. Other times it is a waste of time. That time is now. You spew your pabulum hoping to incite change but all you do is invite ridicule. How sad your life must be. Humans have been ingesting all manner of things since the dawn of time. Once it was believed that absinth would lead to all sorts of maladies. That was the thinking of 20th century science and now, a scant 100 years later, it is found that small doses pose no significant harm. The same can be said for pork, or sugar or even water(yes, too much water can have the same effects on a body as too much alcohol).

One of my many talents is acquiring vast amounts of knowledge. Accurate facts and figures, I might add.
