They should also contain the cockpit voice recorder, which it is hoped will provide clues as to what the cause of the crash was.

The rebels have had several days of uninterrupted access to them and they have former KGB operatives that would have the technical skill needed to alter the tapes to say anything with no difficulty at all. The have the means, motive & opportunity to alter those them so the tapes are probably worse than useless now.
