A direct assault will take too long, and has a higher chance of failure -- and above all else, they can see you coming and will be prepared. Shields can be avoided. Try something unexpected, unusual.

A plan other than direct attack....I suggest these:
a Pincer attack where separate forces pin down an enemy from both sides
Faking a retreat when we strike an ambush at a relaxed and isolated commander.
Become spies within in their army, know their weaknesses, and send in the strike teams to exploit them all.
