MEDAL OF HONOR
Maps
Only two maps in the Beta. One is a small COD-style stage (Kabul), the other a small Battlefi eldesque stage (Helmand).
Shooting
Very much pressed from the Modern Warfare mould. Twitchy, consistently accurate shooting means you rarely use ironsights.
Perks
Get a kill streak and you unlock a thin choice of special abilities, including a mortar strike and an Intel boost.
Weapons
Decent opening armoury, with better weapons later. Extra kit and weapon variety is uninventive next to its rivals too.
Variety
We've seen two modes. One is Team Deathmatch, the other Team Assault, which is a diet version of Bad Company's Rush.
Splash Damage
Grenades and RPGs are weak. They balance close-quarter scraps, but feel nerfed on the more open levels.
Community
There's so little talking on the MOH Beta that we wonder if the voice comm is actually
active at the moment.
Technical Issues
This is a Beta, so expect crash-outs and freezes every couple of games. We can't draw hard conclusions quite yet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MODERN WARFARE 2
Maps
Mostly compact stages that reward camping and quick trigger fingers. Great use of verticality to create killzones.
Shooting
Snappy, twitchy aiming makes this the fastest shooter on PS3. Action is smooth and brutally satisfying, but lacks deeper strategy.
Perks
Smart player upgrades that cover almost every aspect of play, plus mid-mission boosts? MW2 is king of perks.
Weapons
Subtle differences really allow you to find a set-up that suits your style. Starter guns feel soft, so it's tough for newbies.
Variety
Modes are variations on classic themes like Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch. Not original, but enjoyable.
Splash Damage
Sometimes just lobbing a grenade around the corner and hoping for the best works. Splash damage a bit too powerful in MW2.
Community
This is where, amongst others, the douche bags go to play online. It's a hostile environment with limited sense of (friendly) community.
Technical Issues
Servers are rock solid. The only problems arise from players with quicker connections having a slight lag advantage.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY 2
Maps
Bigger scale maps really complement Bad Company's squad-based gameplay. Smartly designed multi-stage levels keep long games feeling fresh too. Oh and you can destroy most of the maps too...
Shooting
Slower-paced than MW2, but rock solid. You're less likely to headshot from a big distance, forcing you to think tactically.
Perks
Here 'perks' are focused on squad play. Medics
unlock med-kits, and de-fibs, engineers get vehicle repair etc.
Weapons
Less variety than MW2, but made up for by the inclusion of vehicles. Starter kit, again, is poor but there's no 'super gun'.
Variety
Only four game types out of the box, and
they're quite similar. Rush is the highlight. Vehicles add big variety, though.
Splash Damage
Mostly spot on, although RPGs are under-powered against infantry. The ability to level buildings adds depth.
Community
Not without its share of idiots, but the focus on squads means that if you work together, you win games.
Technical Issues
None to speak of. DICE constantly update the game too, to remove small bugs and balance weapons.
VERDICT
Right now, it's down to taste. If you love squad combat, Battlefi eld will still be king in October. For twitch-shooters and lone wolves, Modern Warfare 2 is the one to play. At the moment... Medal Of Honor is a close second to COD, and with a few tweaks between now and release (balancing and varied, but not cheap, mid-mission perks), this could steal Infi nity Ward's crown come release.
WHAT MOH NEEDS TO CHANGE
Reduce accuracy for starter weapons and players running and shooting.
Team Assault is too easy to attack. Defence needs more advantages.
No kill cam means camping goes unpunished
Weapon variety needs to expand. They're a bit too similar at the moment.
More mid-mission perks needed.
