Yes we would would be the best thing we could do. But it wont happen with the state of this place we live.

I think that we would be way better off! We wouldn't have to put up with biased decisions based upon religion. There would be a much better decision being made, thought of from both sides, and is open minded about the subject being debated on.

Because...

1) The President is essentially a dictator, and His Word is Law throughout the nation. And,
2) There is no guarantee the decision making process would be affected in any way.

I have to disagree with you. Being secular is an inhuman pretense and a horribly cold thing to wish for in my opinion. I value people having beliefs more than most everything else. If something was completely secular it would probably be heathen. In fact, I admire atheists because they at least make an assertion rather than pretend to be secular. I don't see how anyone could want anything for anyone else without any objective concerns for the world or for humanity.

If we, as an American government, didn't make decisions based on religious...nay...Christian/Catholic beliefs, we most likely wouldn't have to fight for things like gay marriage. But because the majority of the American government, and its people, identifies as Christian (even having the audacity to call it a "Christian Nation".), the bias is wholly religious.

Let's not forget how religion was used to justify not allowing for blacks and whites to marry.

So was the theory of evolution.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how it would be any different. An atheist politician could still be a corrupt politician. He would still be susceptible to all the self-serving egotistical garbage the others are guilty of. Religion has nothing to do with it. I've said this before in relation to political parties, but I'll say it again now in regards to religion: A politician is a politician is a politician is a liar.

I never said it supported racism. I said it was used to justify racism.

I never said it was used properly, either. Nor was Godwin's Law my intention.

My point was that it doesn't matter what the initial concept is, there will always be complete idiots who use it incorrectly, claim blacks are "less evolved" or "the descendents of Cain," or some other garbage, and somehow use it to fuel their own xenophobia. I'm not saying they're right, and I'm not saying it's even accurate to what evolution actually is. My point was that anyone can cite anything and twist it to their purpose if they have enough motivation.

The more I think about it, the more I think we'd be better off.

The main reason I believe an atheist president would benefit the country is because his decisions would not be swayed by religious bias. This would mean that he or she would make decisions based on what they feel is right rather than making decisions based on what their god or bible says.

Discuss:
Benefits of having an atheist president.
Are there any benefits of religion being involved in a president's decision?
The entire world would be better without religion....
Not when the Pledge of Allegiance promotes the US as being 'one nation under god'. That would be just lunacy.

Especially if there are a lot of folk who believe in god, and go to fight wars on his behalf.
Doesn't matter either way. The President should not be making decisions for the all of the American people based on a set of religious views. Those that do are usually trying to sway the votes of those whom they assume to fill a large base of the voting population (usually Christian).
If he was atheist he sadly would not have much support. And a president without support would be a bad president regardless.

And it would be impossible to separate religious ideals from laws of America they were based on.
Whether you hate the bible or just don't care, it would be fallacy to reject the fact that the lessons and ideals held within the book did not help our early founding fathers create an ethically, democratic, fair nation. The Bible is an important part of our nation's history just like temples and artifacts from Aztec culture still have importance in Mexico (even if people still don't believe in it)

You say this like the entirety of scientific learning and advancement before the Enlightenment - and even after - did not come from religious sources. have you ever wondered why we use Roman alphabet, but Arab numerals? It's because math as we know it came from Islamic clergy.

Every human has bias. God, no god, the result will always be imperfect.
