Who would be the victim if the US committed genocide? Such a thing isn't going to just happen because the culture is getting violent and oppressive. That takes some...I don't even know...concentrated hate and aggression, maybe... Americans are too ADD for genocide.

Despite the very heated discussion I've just had with my partner, I am in two minds as to whether the 1.5 million people who died in the Great Hunger qualify it for the term genocide.

That is 1.5 million deaths as a result of a set of policies a government employed.
And that might not count.

A few guesses:

- Outcasts. Anyone who is much more a loner but outspoken.

-Minorities. They may be scapegoated and flayed. Mobs of white bald police officers will roll in with their tanks and force blacks and Hispanics out at gunpoint, and march them into prisons like tehy already are but on a grander scale.

-Dissenters, both left and right wing: They will hunt down atheists, socialists, and anarchists, people who believe in the "free market" and are against government regulation and government takeover of small businesses and houses, are against asset forfeiture, and those who are for government spending on welfare programs to feed and shelter the hungry and cold. Anyone who is against our wars.

-The government: Yes, I think it will be not a revolution but a civil war following a coupe, if there hasn't already been one. The 50 states act more like 50 nations and D.C. is much more like Rome, the center of a global empire that reaches beyond it's own borders. I'm not sure which if any government factions I'd be rooting for, though some would be preferable.. I guess.

The government is as ADD as the people if not worse. The election cycle keeps "leaders" focused on the short term. I really don't see "We must kill all the X" getting enough momentum to cause a genocide without severe change in society preceding it.

This is where we differ.
In the same way as the policies of the UK government during the Great Hunger do not qualify for genocide, nearly do those policies.

That's all well and fine. However, if you wish to educate someone or correct a perceived mistake, there is no need to mention where you think they are on the social ladder and/or their level of education as a negative.
