According to an interview he gave to La X 103.9 FM Medellin, he chose his name because he thought nobody would ever register the domain name "deadmau5", at least not with the 5 on it, and, because it was very original.

I was told by a deadmau5 fanatic sorta friend of mine that deadmau5 called himself like that because he was seriously high on drugs and suddenly found a dead rat and found it so trippy (or something like a huge realization to him or whatever) that he called himself deadmau5.

Now I know this is bs xd but eh... I would've made up an imaginative response rather than "it's original!"
