My real question is: Why do the mods even want to work on a website like this? Power is lovely and all that. I like helping people, but why would I want to help a website like this? I've done moderator jobs on other websites, and I would've said at this point, you know what? This website does not DESERVE my dedication and help. I sincerely hope the moderation/admin team wakes up and decides to take its own stand and "picket" for the issues this website faces, rather than gritting their teeth and pretending it'll all pass.
Please keep in mind that mods do not work on the site. We are volunteers. We are not staff.

Personally, I've been on this site since 2003. I pretty much grew up here, so I want to do as much as I can to help.

I question: Why in this day in age support the way the website is currently managed?
Like I said before, I want to do as much as I can since I pretty much grew up on this site. That's how I see it. I can't answer for others.

I had that in mind full well. It's respectable that the moderators are volunteering their time and effort to this website, but my reasons behind posting this are being taken quite out of context.

I question: Why in this day in age support the way the website is currently managed?

For the same reason one might pick up trash out of the river that they like swimming in, or intervene in a dispute in an area of town that's gotten a little rough, or continue living somewhere that has long since fallen to the wayside. Because it's what they came to enjoy doing. Because they feel they should. Because it's become part of who they are.

I spent over 10 years of my life on this site. I volunteered moving threads, then volunteered as a Mod, then worked as an Admin, then worked as a Developer. I did what was in my power to make the site, that I had enjoyed spending my time on, enjoyable for others. I cleaned up racist comments from trolls who were out for a laugh, I deleted pictures that should never have seen the light of day, I fixed features and built events that I thought helped to continue the fun and entertainment that I had experienced when I was just a regular user all those years ago. Had I not received an offer that advanced my professional career, I'd probably still be here pumping out whatever events I could, fixing whatever bugs I could find, helping in any way I was able to. Doing those things isn't a comment on how the site is being managed though, it's an action being taken out of a desire to make things better and make others happy.

I don't see the actions of Moderators as being equivalent to supporting any style of management of the site either. They volunteer their time to clean up the site, to try and keep things orderly, because they want to make the forum experience as good as they can for other users. They once had to deal with a porn troll who wouldn't get out of their thread and wasn't dealt with for an extended period of time. So they sought out the ability to help prevent anyone else from having to go through that same experience. They don't get paid for doing what they do, they don't influence what happens at HQ, and their only real stake in how the site is run is that it's their online home that's up in the air. Rather than feel sorry for themselves or find somewhere else to go, they stay and do anything they can to make the site enjoyable like they want it to be, like they remember. For some, that's crazy talk and a waste of time, but for them it's part of who they are.

You have a voice though, when there are tons of complaints in the SF section here on gaia about the same thing and they go unanswered even if it is in the form of an announcement then something is wrong.

Goddamn, but it feels so wrong to see your username in black.

Anyways, as much as I really don't like some of the moderating style encouraged on this website, I'm with Kenny--there's nothing wrong with staying to help out a place that might not be as perfect as it once was. Some people just want to do good and be involved. Some people are just sentimental. It's helping out the community either way, and that's what matters.

Tbh, Mods can't answer 95% of the complaints here. They're just helpers and have nothing to do with HQ, so they can't really answer something they don't know anything about. But those staff members that do work at HQ, we rarely ever see them these days.

Yes they read it, I've seen staff post in certain threads. Not in all because 90% of the threads here are eithet people that didn't use the guidelines, simply don't put feedback but just rage, whine and complain or it's another "******** this I'm leaving" thread. Not all staff knows everything too, so tjey can't explain things they're not involved with.

Oh my, you're awesome, I always thought that!
Yeah, they say something really cheeky, then lock it, and end up giving off that really snobbish vibe.
The help around here is.. less than satisfactory all the way around. :/

I feel like there's so much s**t that needs to be fixed.
Not later, It needs to be done now. And they don't care.
It's quite maddening to a large degree.... you know? cat_stressed

Not sure if your second paragraph is still referring to mods (since I know Molniya was talking about mods in her post) and not staff, but mods do not handle technical issues with the site. That's the developers' jobs. And even though it doesn't look like it, they may be trying to fix things behind the scenes, but we just don't see it or they may run into problems while fixing stuff (I'm a beginner when it comes to coding, but if there's one thing I know, it's that if you fix coding somewhere, it will most likely break somewhere else). For example, codemonkey is currently trying to find a fix to the horrible Fishing captcha as well as adjust the latest scaling issues in Towns 2 (I haven't stepped into Towns 2 yet, so I don't know if the scaling issues have been fixed).
