For a while I was able to donate the same Charcoal Sketchbook, (which is worth 3 points) and still get points without losing the item, but it eventually took. So I bought another, but that one isn't showing up to donate.

You can't donate the entire bundle, you have to unpack it first.

I went ahead and checked it out. The cheapest one (olive) gives you 10 points as well.
So, 25k per point on shells, or 50k per point on caches. 10x as faster with 1/2 the price.
