Also, thank you to everyone who participated in this contest. You all did such a good job with your designs that picking a winner was much harder than we were expecting it to be! If we had it our way, we'd be drawing more than just one. But, then we realized, why can't we have it our way?

Because of that, we're giving those of you who didn't win the option of having your Nightmares made anyway.

First, every design entered can be copied and pasted as-is (or embellished upon, it's up to you) into a quest thread to be guaranteed filled at a later date. That way, whenever one of our artists has time on their hands, we can pick through the quests and make sure all of these awesome designs join our Nightmare Academy family!

However, if you don't feel like waiting, each of the Nightmares entered here has a guaranteed slot for a Full Custom Hybrid RLC. Just hit up our RLC Page and order away! There's no time limit on this, so don't worry about losing your chance.

This was a lot of fun and we hope to do something like this again soon, so keep an eye out for our next events!

As changes comes to Below at the beginning of Spring, so it comes to Nightmare Academy. For the Winter's End Carnival event, we're introducing Hybrids as playable characters! This gives people a wider range of character customization than ever before. However, Hybrids will be incredibly limited, meaning it'll be harder to get them than any other Nightmare, including Fallen.

We will be auctioning off three premade designs, running a design contest and opening three RLC Hybrid slots!

Welcome to our first ever Design Contest! In this contest, you get to design your own Hybrid for a chance to have them made into a Growing Nightmare! You don't need any artistic skill for this, just some good ideas and the ability to write them out.

On 4/27/14 at 8pm EST, our artists (Bitter Owl and s t a r k i d j a g g e r) will choose their favorite and the design will be made into a Growing Nightmare for the winner!

1. Please keep spelling and grammatical mistakes to a minimum!

Character's Name: Neilos
Races: Baphomet/Geist/Litch

▁ ▂ ▃ ▄ ▅ ▆ ▇ Appearance

When first looking at Neilos, you might notice that he's a bit of a mess in terms of genetics. Some traits are obviously that of a Baphomet—large, curly horns and big ears and grey furry ram's legs fading to black—but there seems to be a bit of Geist in there as well. His limbs have the characteristic ethereal look about them, all tendrils and translucence. Upon further inspection, you probably notice a bit of his face is missing as well, marking him as the likely offspring of a Litch as well. His eyes (black sclera and glowing grey iris) have a Litch-y look about them as well, faintly luminescent from behind the thick frames of his glasses. His skin is pale and splotched with black, and his hair is black and curly—shorter on the sides than it is on top.

Almost at odds with his cluttered appearance, his clothing is fairly simple. He appears to favor the monochrome, a black hoodie, black slacks are his go-to outfit. Beneath his hoodie, the only interest (if you could even call it that) to his outfit is a grey-and-black striped shirt.

While his posture is easygoing, you can see a certain intensity in the way he takes in his surroundings. As he stares intently down his aquiline nose at a book or smiles warmly at a passing Nightmare, one can see that he takes a fierce joy in new experiences and all the things life has to offer.

Neil loves most facets of life and is a bit of a hedonist, but he has a particular affection for the arcane and terrifying. He loves monsters and horror and all kinds of strange and novel things. He loves reading and does it liberally, but his heart is in exploring and experiencing.

However, he is often afflicted with the incredible need to lock himself away and write, as though his head has become too full of the things he's experienced. He primarily enjoys writing horror stories, gravitating toward the Lovecraftian versus the more mundane.

Something was very, very not right.

Neil stopped in his tracks, going over a bit of a mental checklist. Shoes? Check. Drink? Check. Prizes? Check, he thought, as he stared down at the Donnel doll in his hands. It stared back, in a sort of wall-eyed way. Tickets? Che—

Crap.

He scrabbled at his person for a moment before realizing the pocket of his hoodie was woefully empty. He began to retrace his steps as a vague panic rose in his throat. He had promised Ella that he was going to win her one of the giant Fox plushies, and he really did like Ella. As it became apparent that his tickets weren't in the direction he had come, he realized Ella was probably going to have to go without.

Maybe a teacher will take pity on me, he thought, plopping himself down in a bench. He was a good student. Maybe one of his writing teachers? It might have been worth a shot, but dammit, he was a Senior and too old to be going to teachers about being absent-minded enough to lose his tickets.

However, as a group of Juniors wandered by, he caught the scent of a big wad of fried dough and felt his resolve weaken. All he had bought with his tickets were some cotton candy and a sausage sandwich and that was not nearly enough carnival food to last him. With the exception of Ella's Fox, he had intended to spend his tickets on at least two more sandwiches, an ice cream cone and as much fried dough as he could eat without (or with, he was willing to make sacrifices) getting sick.

It was then that he noticed a ticket lying in the trampled grass, stained and a bit crumpled. He pounced on it with a ferocity that was a bit startling even to himself.

This is one fourth of a plate of fried dough, he thought, eyes darting back and forth desperately along the ground.

It was a beacon of hope, kicking him in the butt and telling him not to take this lying down. If there was one ticket, there were definitely more. He was sure he could barter favors for them as well. He had connections. He knew people.

Straightening up and saying a quick prayer to Cyllenus and Eleutherius, he stuffed the ticket into his pocket and went to find some friends.

The first thing one would notice when they set eyes on Iris is are her long curling grey-green horns with her blue-black feathered ears nestled right below. Surrounding them is a full head of long curly hair that reaches her mid-back. Sprouting from her back are a pair of elegant wings that are tipped in white but are dipped in blue that darkens to black the closer you get to the base of her wings. Her legs are covered in a soft curly green down that grows lighter until it reaches her little brown cloven hooves. These contrasting ombre traits are separated by a thin figure and pale skin lightly dusted with freckles.

In a futile attempt to hide her appearance, Iris favors large sweaters in comparison to more revealing or skin-tight clothing that other more self-confident Nightmares sometimes don. To try and attract less attention that she draws from being a Hybrid, Iris tries to hide the features of one race so she would appear to be a purebred. Though she has attempted to hide her Baphomet traits, she finds that concealing her Fallen Traits seem to be the easier route. Big sweaters aid in hiding her wings and she has almost perfected tucking her hair around her horns to hide her feathered ears.

Insecure and timid, Iris usually hunches her shoulders to try and make herself smaller and less noticeable. She keeps her eyes down and always has her tiny hands clasped around a notepad, a pen always tucked behind her ear or held in the curl of one of her horns.

Iris mostly keeps to herself, so she finds pleasure in little things like the smell of old books, uncapping a brand new inkwell pen, the feeling of an old weathered typewriter at her fingertips and quiet days spent in the library with something to warm her stomach. Her favorite time of day is sunset, because the myriad of colors on the horizon helps her channel her muse and produce her best stories.

Iris attends Arkham Academy, due to her passion for literature and writing. Her whole life is in the library or with a pen and paper in her hands. Iris had learned to content herself with her books and her writing supplies, spinning stories of a different world as she tried to escape her own.

Stepping carefully through the crowds of Nightmares, Iris navigated away from the small cider booth and toward a quiet corner that softly glowed with fairylights. She had become overwhelmed when a loud group of Seniors had invaded the stall and made such a ruckus that she had been too flustered to stay. The tiny Junior sighed, running a wan finger over the spiral on her notebook. She didn't even want to go to the Winter's End Carnival. Iris was content tucked away in the Arkham library with her typewriter and her books. She thought that maybe the atmosphere of the celebration would spark something, lead her to a whole new realm of stories, but she was proven wrong almost instantly as she was overwhelmed by the noise and smells that had crashed into her as she entered the masses of students.

Well, at least she brought her notebook. Her little adventure wouldn't be a complete failure if she could just get something useful onto the paper. Iris plucked her inkwell pen from its resting place in the curl of a horn and uncapped it, flipping open the cover of her worn, well-used notebook. But wait, what was this? The tickets that were tucked so neatly in the little pocket on the inside were missing! Wide eyes franticly searched the covers, fanning though the pages for the tickets that might have been tucked between them. Iris let out a pained little sigh; a warning like the thunder before the rain. Going to the Carnival was turning out to be a really bad idea. She wouldn't admit it, but she had wanted to try a couple of the games and win herself a companion. Even if it was stuffed.

The Baphomet-Fallen girl had tucked her pen back in her horn and had risen to leave when a little Imp scampered up to her. Zhe was wearing a little golden apron and had zher own little notebook and pen resting in one of its pockets. Iris immediately recognized zher from the little cider stand, where zhe was bringing the nightmares their drinks. The Junior watched zher curiously as zhe approached, little blue papers peeking out of zher hands. "Excuse me Miss, but you left your tickets under your mug." the little one tittered, extending the tickets for her to take. Iris was so astonished that she just stared, her large eyes resting on the youths'. If she remembered correctly, she had caught the Imp glancing at the brightly-colored game booths while bringing the students their drinks. Quickly making her decision, Iris closed the Imp's hands with her own. "Keep them. You're working so hard, you deserve a break." The quiet words curled out of her mouth, lighting up the little one's eyes like the fairylights behind her. "Th-thank you, Miss!" zhe squeaked, skittering off to hang up zher apron and hit the game stalls.

Smiling happily, Iris watched zher disappear, flipping open her notebook. Thanking the Gods for sending her inspiration, Iris began her tale on the adventures of the little cider stall Imp.
