I am in the US yeah and I agree Montreal is beautiful! I really enjoy the city even though sometimes I get very thrown off with all the french and feeling very self conscious speaking english. I want to learn it even thought it will be harder as an adult. sweatdrop Duolingo eh? never heard of it, i will check it out, thank you! My boyfriend is the same, he's lost his fluentcy after high school, he's pretty anglo unless he's talking to his more french friends or making me translate stuff out in the city, which is why my reading is better then speaking or listening lol
It's hard because a lot of Quebecois people are pretty discriminatory against English speaking people. Even though we're all Canadian, there's definitely a rift there. Quebec is trying to make it so that in order to live there, you must be fluent. It's a bit silly, in my opinion.
Honestly, don't be self conscious about speaking English, if you keep it up you'll be able to understand everything in no time. I practice my French in the Duolingo app, it's amazing how much you can retain. The hardest part about actually speaking it are the accents, rolling letters, and letters that aren't pronounced, or letters that make a different noise when combined. For example, peu (little) is pronounced purr but no emphasis on the 'rr'. So weird.
On another note, I'm just finishing up making a Jamaican chickpea stew. I think I may have used too much red wine, cause I'm a little lightheaded, haha.
Edit: I just watched the video Ruriska posted and it gave me a hearty chuckle. What is that from?
