Why is it that Americans put a "u" in "courage" but say there's no "u" in words like "colour" and "neighbour" when the sound is the same as the "our" sound in "courage"?

Personality: He was quiet. But when he spoke, it was a hypnotic melody, a song you begged to hear again and again. He was dark and mystery, like a classic bad-boy, and even thought he was the sort of guy your mother would warn you about, you just keep going back for more.

He was strong, and moved with a gracefulness that seemed to be like watching a dream. The wind through his mane and an utter joy, at just being free, it seemed. But then... There was a definite darker side, one much deeper in the shadow.

He just seemed lonely was all, and I think in most ways, he was. He seemed haunted by something, but he never spoke about it. Ever. He'd subtly avoid questions about himself, but then later he'd disappear for a few hours. Sometimes, at least one or two of us would hear a melody in faint notes on the wind. And only when he wasn't there.

I only heard it once. It seemed to me to be a sad sort of lament...

Here are my try at the CV's Garden Forgotten by Time pony.. not sure if I did it right, though. And so far, I don't have a name or gender for it, just using his/he as a placeholder.

This pony ::
Always hiding his feeling.
For instance, by covering up his troubles and sadness with smiles and laughter.
Even when his life is a mess, he acts calm.
But inside, though, he's actually fighting with his feeling.

Due to the emotion he portrays to people,
he is considered a warm and gentle friend.
He always tries to help, advice, and calm his friends down.

But for his own problems, only those he truly trust does he share it with.
And it’s only when he’s alone that he lets it all out.
